  1. In a future client it would be better to use a vector based map format rather than tiles if pixel perfect was required. Map sizes would increase however still.
  2. port 54 is DNS (udp and tcp) port 25 is SMTP (tcp only) Most messengers get thought firewalls by using port You can setup continuum to work though a proxy i think to get around port restrictions.
  3. The thing is to PLAY subspace you shouldn't need any ports open anyway! You only need to open ports to host a server.
  4. You shouldnt even need to open any ports just to play subspace if ISA is configured correctly Are all the zones appearing red? Or are they green and you can't connect? If they are green: It may not be the ISPs fault. If they are red the following below is my opionion: Thats a bs excuse. Either they have it configured incorrectly, or do not wish to allow udp traffic for some reason they not telling you. ISA can be configured to allows udp traffic with no issues. Its not very difficult in ISA to allow udp traffic. Its possible if they are using ISA2004 this might be a problem but it seems unlikly. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915461 At work (which is very locked down) we use an ISA server and i can connect to subspace without issue. You will have trouble playing most other online games as well if they block udp ports in this way. I think the only alternative will be to find a new ISP
  5. All subspace servers communicate bi-directionally using UDP. However many different ports are used. In my opinion (i may be incorrect) They would need to completly unblock all the udp ports ( with numbers greater than 1024) in order for you to play every zone with out difficulty.
  6. is this why sstcentral.com is now the new website name http://www.namecheap.com/marketplace/for-s...asp?mp_id=18230
  7. Personally I think both theories will subsequently be proved wrong. Or amalgamated into one. If anyone rembers 19th centuary phycics, scientists argued light was a wave some people said a particle. As it turns out the real answer was it was both, but not quite in the way either group invisaged it. Both groups i think in the end claimed credit and said they were right all along....
  8. Also remember IE7 is only for windows XP, 2003 and vista. You can't get it on older versions. Alot of people still use windows 2000 and windows 98 (especially fellow SSers). All the computers at my work are windows 2000, hence everyone uses IE6. Firefox is not an option as my work uses activeX controls.
  9. 50% of the world still uses IE6 unfortunatly...Including my place of work. The problem is something to do with one of IE6's many buggy css routines i think.... It creates some margins by itself even if u dont tell it too If u look at the left side of the menu in ie6 there is black margin that isnt their in firefox. Also the network bar at the top doesnt appear in firefox
  10. These deaths (as with the 30,000 gun related deaths each year in the USA) are in part the price you pay for liberal gun laws. No freedom is without cost. If everyone is free to own a gun, than it is more likely psychos will get them and kill people. If only some people can have guns than theres less of a chance of this happening. But the freedom to own a gun has been lost. Here in the UK knives or blunt instruments are generally used instead of a guns to kill people (its not straightforward to obtain guns (its illegal to own a handgun)- u need "contacts" as opposed to going into a shop and being 16+ as u do for knives) The advantage however of this is its hard to kill a large number of people with a knife, however this disturbed dude who was let out did attack people with a samuri sword a while ago and killed like 2 people and injured like 8 i seem to remember....
  11. I understand his idea, its an interesting one. Bascially custom ship loadouts. Except without leveling up or credits or any of that bull. You just customize your ship how u like it.
  12. I've heard some rumours that management at The planet has gone downhill last couple of years, alot of the people who used to work there went off and formed softlayer...
  13. That's an invitation to have people go around it. That's why I don't have a computer moderate the zone. I don't want people thinking "sh!t" is ok. If someone's using questionable words, then they're missing the point altogether. Its not an invitation at all, you list the words people are not allowed to say, then state trying to trick the word filter will get you banned. Then your moderators can enforce this rule 1st=warning 2nd=ban, its quite a simple system and it would be effective (i've seen it work in IRC chat rooms which dont allow swearing). Let me explain why you need a list, the problem is this is a global game. Sticking with just english some words in america have different meanings to those in other english speaking countries. The following words have some different meanings !@#$%^&*ociated with them in Britain to what you might think they do mean. Thus I could talk about "smoking some ASSS" and you might think im trying to kill some gay people, when infact i meant smoking tobacco
  14. No swearing is fine, but imo hs should have a definiative list of swear words, otherwise its just going to be abused by staff to ban people they don't like.... I mean someone people would say the word "crap" is a swear word and some wouldn't.
  15. Prehaps HS can publish a list of words not allowed, so that one does not get banned by accident. I have quite a wide vocabulary of insults in a wideish varity of languages, i would like to know which i can use whilst in HS
  16. I have some GCSEs and A Levels
  17. I have to agree with grav on this one - no swearing rule is silly. Even TW allows swearing, but to keep it family friendly it has ?obscene turned on by default. I think this is the fairest solution imo, then you can always ban the people who try to trick the filter....
  18. As i have said before netop = thankless task. Creds to whoever does it cos i wouldnt want to do it!
  19. If people whine about a ship being lame, but don't play that ship. Its normally doing its job correctly.
  20. If you make an SS thong i will buy it edit: for myself i may add
  21. Its a thankless task whoever gets the job...
  22. they still do? tw radio is alive and well broadcasting every saterday and sunday evening i think http://forums.trenchwars.org/showthread.php?t=29187
  23. It is better to apoint them. Judges should be impartial. Otherwise their decisions will be affected by there concern for their popularity. Thus they will be given to give out disproportionate sentances and make biased rulings. All judges are appointed in the UK. And once appointed they cannot be sacked (barring any serious professional misconduct). It is an essential basis of law that a judge should be impartial. Electing them leads to bias.
  24. Chaos/League, TW and EG will be the last zones in SS. Sometimes the hardest thing to do, it to leave things alone that work. 17th is a good example of this. Once a zone gets to a certain size however i think it is to a degree self-sufficent. Its size will attact enough new players to replace those that leave.
