Hanging up my SS Hat folks... More to come. P.S. Gallitin taking over SubSpace.co operations.

There is lots of cheating, though your average player never notices it. Bots and Staff have been pretty quick to handle them, and we've gotten pretty good at locking them out of the game (thanks to there being active access to lvl0 bang for net-bans). People also just haven't cared to spread how they cheated, or a program to do so. Some have even turned to attempting to help solve/point out the exploits, and unlike some in the past we have listened to them to keep from having another catid-like episode. We can't be nieve enough to believe computers, programs, and cheating techniques are still locked circa 2007. The game is still very vulnerable, but as previously stated, has dwindled to the point most don't feel it is worth their time to cheat.

It is coming to an end I think. Or atleast my activity in game is/will be. TBH I barely login anymore, which may be part of my issue with keeping things going. I recently thought I just needed to motivate myself, tried and tried, but failed. But then a buddy of mine needed some help with some stuff for his site/work, and I whipped him out some graphics and simple code in a couple days without issue. So really isn't my lacking, but the lack of drive this community gives to you anymore. But on a more positive note, with the population bug being gone, can see our population has barely dwindled since before it started. As much as it feels otherwise sometimes.

There is no server setting for a delayed turn off of antiwarp. There is just the ability to disable it when someone enters safe in the server.ini but no delay. The bots can't just turn your antiwarp off, but they can unprize and reprize it to give the effect that they did, but you would have seen that. This is either an undocumented client side bug/feature, or the previous line is true and you didn't notice. Edit: Tested this and after ~2.5mins the bot(s) removed my anti and re-added it. I say bot(s) as it was unprized, prized, unprized, and prized again.

My how things have changed. 10 years ago when we first cracked the idea of a new central forum system to compete with SubSpace Headquarters' ForumHQ this game was on a comeback, web traffic to the sites was insane, and the community was active and involved. SSForum was a 2am idea (as I use to call them, 5am for rowen) me and rowen came up with. It actually took a few weeks of discussion, talking with CybeRise and other people to decide to pull the trigger. Until that time, SubSpace.net had gone from having their own forums, to having sub-forums on GameAddict's forums, to using SSCentral.com's forums, and then back to their own. SSCentral.com hopped between ForumHQ and their own forums a couple times before landing on keeping their own up and running (using this very same forum script). SubSpaceDownloads.com never really had a forum after SSNet hopped around a few times, and so players lacked a connection to the site. September 1st, 2002 SSForum.net was launched. It used a pirated copy of vBulletin, was co-admined by Cybe, Rowen, and myself, along with quickly having 100+ active members at any given time. A lot of ups and downs have happened through the history of the forums from changing to SSCentral's forums after SSNet dissapeared, to becoming the face of the last running general community site. I'd like to thank everyone and anyone involved over the years, especially the former admins, super moderators, and moderators. All I got for now. Note: SSForum.net is expired atm, but going to get it fixed.

I'll see if I can get Priit's ear on this. Honestly, without him, we can't resolve the issues continuum has loading with steam for some people.
-
have you tried downloading the zip and just extracting it somewhere and running that?
-
There is actually a couple ways to do it, but if you message me in game I'd be glad to explain. Not really a flaw, as much as a quick patch to a problem. Benefit is that the triggers happen so rarely, and some require staff powers that your average person doesn't know them. But hey, we have the ability to create solutions, just noone has the time.

Usage isn't the real key to this equation. And to add onto the reply to brain, it is because the data that is a big key to it all can only be seen by billing ops anyways. Players can control it to some extent, but noone but ops can see it. Their knowledge of the ability could also cause some big issues for the biller, as it has been known to cause the biller to kick zones offline in the past when players manipulated it. It use to be more public knowledge, but most who knew, are long gone. Not all ops are aware of it either, which could be a good thing when some in the past were more than willing to abuse the billing system for monetary gain amongst other things. Let the head scratching continue.

^ Partially correct. What part is the real question.

Read the building.txt, and seems it would be Discretion.exe, my bad. Do you get any errors when compiling? As Samapico said, either for some odd reason it ended up somewhere else or it didn't compile correctly.
-
Except when action was threatened against all the zones, you threatened to shutdown hyperspace in retaliation?
-
That is because it won't be a .exe

For billing IP in the server.ini set it to localhost
-
You need to manually add the zone, you cannot connect to your own IP. Under the "Zones" menu, click "Add Custom..." For Zone put in "Local Zone" For IP Address: put in "127.0.0.1" For Port: put in the zone's port Click "OK" The zone should now be on your list as "Local Zone" and you should be able to connect to it and play.

<ASSS: C> Fake Player Platform: Official Public Release
PoLiX replied to Cheese's topic in Development
Being ASSS is Open-Source and the whole purpose behind it was to allow other developers to contribute, be able to update/modify, and to get away from the closed source issues this game is plagued with; I would say it is more the standard that if you are going to release anything for asss, you should release the source to honor the abilities that the open source server gave you. Just my own opinion though, and just like assholes we all have them. -
Sometimes OS installs just don't go right, and it takes some tweaking for different users to get things to work the same. Some need to disable DEP, sometimes an anti-virus/anti-spyware programs read continuum differently than others (had to uninstall microsoft's windows defender as it kept blocking continuum, and then the dlls), and some find continuum isn't the only program with issues and a fresh install of windows fixes everything. Seems you might have fallen in the later. Thanks for the update.

Am holding off on the installer update due to priit actually replying. But I do still think the zones need to turn off peering unless he replies he is willing to tweak it. He most likely doesn't care if they are altering population or not, won't put any pressure on him. Also toying with the downloader for the installer to attempt to download an updated zone.dat off the server during install. This way we can always keep it up to date without chasing down the installer. May even have it check the exe and dlls, but would really be unnecessary as the zone should report an issue anyways. Though might be nice to get them to do it before hand, save more potential players. This may also give the ability to have more accurate stats on how may installs per downloads we actually get.

Sounds like good moves to me man. Keep up the good work.

I was able to reach Priit on another subject and he responded quickly. Have now passed on this subject, and will keep you guys updated.
-
I updated the installer last may, but so many things have changed server wise in the past year, the zone.dat is out of date. I even posted an updated zone.dat in the downloads for players, but it too has quickly gone out of date. I have decided that only certain zones will be put on the default list now (There are really only 7-8 actively developed, populated, and staffed zones, and they haven't changed anything in quite a few years). Will make sure to let players know they can download other zones though. This may help with the red zones issue. I am planning to push this installer on quite a few websites I control the download on, so hopefully will get a good mass update out there.

A url would be nice. It wasn't discussed in game with me, and I registered here just for this, because stag fwded me ssc emails. Simple searches aren't turning up anything obvious right away. edit: in any event, the question is about priit's attitude more than the src itself. edit: resolved in game.

^ The amount of features lost would kill the zone.

Hallu would tell you my threat had nothing to do with it. He had thought about removing it previously, and had been on vacation. This just brought it to mind, and so he did. He was actually surprised to have a person contact him the next day saying they were happy to see it gone. The threat isn't by myself. I again am just louder, and have the ability to make such a threat. The other zones have made their own threats (IE: TW leaving the SSC Biller) though noone has made it this public thus far (minus the previous thread on this issue, but HS just added 1K to pop there). I personally think Ghost Ship's threat of removing the zones from SSC was a bit far, but he is my superior, and that is his call. I do not speak of just Ekted's code. But the Continuum source issue was discussed in game, to which I replied here also. Obviously there is much you have to learn about the client's code. As far as the fix.dll, yes it is all Priit's code, so he has no excuse there beyond his security paranoia. Childish, maybe, but I'm not here to impress anyone. Sometimes we have to result to childish antics to get something done when everything is in a stalemate. Leverage must be used to make a move.
