  1. Reading posts in our private forum, I feel less and less guilty about it all. Multiple posts about how the community was just becoming toxic and crap. Luckily, I think most of those individuals have left. Not all, but most.
  2. For years, nearly 11yrs now, I have been pestered to bring back SSForum. Until February of this year, I ignored that call completely and didn't even play the game anymore. Occasionally logging in just to keep my account alive and see how much the population had dropped. This past February, while talking to a friend from another game, he mentioned wanting to create his own fan discord or forum for it. I offered to help if he really wanted to go for it and he asked me what experience I had. After we talked about my history here and with a few other games, he mentioned SubSpace looked so decentralized and was probably doomed to die. For the first time in 11 years, I felt a bit of nostalgia about the game. I also felt some responsibility for that decentralization by shutting down all my sites back in November 2014. I talked to a few people that month about why I had truly left, expecting them to tell me it was stupid, but many agreed they would have done the same thing. They weren’t mad nor did they blame me for my actions but told me the community was far better now than it was then. I did leave due to my grandfather’s passing, but it had nothing to do with the cost of the license or server. That was just an excuse as every time I shared the reason that I wasn’t active, I just got all sorts of grief about it. My grandmother needed help and that was my focus, not this game, not the websites. Once he passed that went up 10-fold, hell, 100-fold. People just focused on the game and told me “That sucks, but I need your help” or “I don’t care, I need <insert some little truly insignificant thing>.” I didn’t see why I was spending money or time on a community who seemed to care so little about each other. Not that I expect it to be all touchy feely (I am totally not that type of person), but I expected at least a little sympathy and “well, once you have a few minutes, that’d be great.” As a NetOp I saw the worst of the community daily. People getting banned for all sorts of vile stuff (racism, child pornography, cyberbullying) on top of the regular stupidity, and I had already begun to question what this game’s chat channels were enabling. The stuff we caught was only on the surface; I was sure of that. Once I stepped away from NetOp, people told me all sorts of things that were going on, they just didn’t want to share it before because they didn’t want their “friends” to get in trouble. My line in the sand had far been crossed, and I was no longer interested in being part of it all. I made the decision to shut down my sites, came up with a reason that in my opinion was hard to argue with, and walked away. I was no better than the other liars, but at least it was my last. Flashback to February and I decided to restore some centralized web community for the game. There were sooo many projects, I didn’t think SubSpace was just SubSpace or Continuum anymore. I decided maybe it was best to come up with something to categorize everything the community was building for this Massively Multiplayer Online Game. TheMMOG.com was born and had some traction. Then began the pouring in of messages and requests to “bring SSForum back”. The database truly had multiple corrupt rows and even tables of data. Some I wasn’t sure I could drop without causing issues with functionality of the software or addons. Some it just checked if they were there, not even using them ever it seemed. I spent the last few days (almost 12hrs yesterday alone) working through the database removing data, restoring it from old backups I used Disk Drill to find on old hard drives, and I was able to get a functioning database. I ran Invision’s upgrader to bring the forum from version 3.4 all the way to version 4.7 with a lot of headaches, but in the end success. A normal 30-minute upgrade took me almost 6 hours. I was able to save it all in the end and now have a fully functional database and cleaner installation. This will be here for the community to do as they wish with, hopefully positive. Read the history for nostalgia, post new posts (I know Samapico and others made many bug fixes on DCME), or connect with old friends in PMs. The domain has auto renewed for years, the server cost is minimal, and the software license, while ridiculous, I’ll just cover. Maybe I’ll convert to free software, maybe not. Anyways… Enjoy!

  5. Think I fixed it, but still seems a bit odd. Might just be the low quality of the original graphic.
  6. Normally more cycles helps us determine your problem, but sadly this time it is the typical bad hopone.net routers. Many people for years now have tried to contact the company, tried ideas to route around this, etc. but there seems to be no solid solution other than waiting it out. I do recall someone having luck from your area switching the dns on their router from their ISP to OpenDNS's (http://www.opendns.com/). Give that a shot, but sorry for the lack of help we can provide.
  7. Moving to Technical Support as there are some people subscribed to that forum who do like tracking issues down.
  8. http://www.ssforum.net/test/files/file/27-%7B%3F%7D/ Updated after the new servers came online. Replace your current zone.dat with it and give it a shot. Looks like you did everything right, but could just be something off.
  9. I receive the error "Unable to create zones\...\map.lvl" when entering a zone, how do I fix this? OS: Vista -> (Should work the same on XP and before, but the steps arent exactly right) Right-click Continuum folder.Click "Properties"Click the "Security" tab.Click "{}Edit" ({} represents the admin shield which requires additional approval)When the UAC box comes up, click "Continue"If your username is in the box, click then continue to step 8If your username is NOT in the box, click ADD, type in your username then hit "Enter"Highlight your username, then make sure the box next to "Full Control" under the "Allow" column is checked off.OK/Apply out of ALL boxes. 10. I cannot select any resolutions, what can I do? Symptoms No resolution choices appear in the 'Resolution' menu of the main screen. 11. How does lag work? Lag has two sides: ping time and packetloss. Understanding ping times is easy. A ping time is the amount of time it takes for data to go from your computer to the server and then back to your computer. It is measured in milliseconds (One second is 1000 milliseconds). Obviously, a smaller ping time is better. Ping times of over 300ms noticably affect gameplay and ping times of over 500ms make any real gameplay impossible. Data on the internet is sent in units called packets. In this game, one packet is up to 520 bytes long. Because connections are not perfect (bad physical media, connection overloads, ...), some packets never make it through to the other end. Continuum handles this by making sure that all important packets go through and re-sending them until they go though if they should fail. Packetloss is the amount of packets that do not reach the destination and have to be sent again. In Continuum, packetloss is measured in 3 ways: S2C (Server to Client) is the amount of packets that never reach your computer from the server. This will cause others to seem to jump around on your screen. C2S (Client to Server) is the amount of packets that never reach the server from your computers. This will cause you to jump around on other players' screens. S2C (Server to Client) Weapons is the amount of weapons (Bombs, bullets, repels, decoys, ...) that never reach your computer. Weapons are never re-sent, so this is a great (and unfair) advantage to you. The amount of this can only be viewed by game moderators. Packetloss is measured as a percent. 0% packetloss is best, which means that no packets get lost. It is also possible to have negative packetloss, which means that some packets get sent multiple times. This is not harmful, but can overload weaker connections (56k). You can check your ping times with the command ?ping. This is a client command, which means that you will always get a reponse to this. You can check your packetloss with the command ?packetloss. This is a server command, which means that you will not get a response if not connected to the server. You can check both with the command ?lag. This is also a server command.
  12. Why will Continuum not load for me? There are many reports where attempting to run Continuum does nothing at all. It never shows up. This is always caused by some other program that Continuum does not like. Continuum has built-in security mechanisms that do not allow it to be run if a suspicious program is active. You can try closing the "suspicious" programs or uninstalling them. These are the types of programs that are most likely to do this and some known troublemakers are also listed: Anti-spyware programs (SpySweeper, AdWatcher, Spyware Doctor, ...)Spyware programsFirewallsAnti-virus programs (Panda AntiVirus, Norton AV 005...)Any other security programsAny auto-scanning programsData Execution Prevention (in Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance Settings/DEP)Any "system fixer" tools (Tune-Up Utilities, ...)Programming tools (debuggers)Norton programsWarcraft 3If you have a nVIDIA card try this: Control Panel - Display - Advanced - Gforce6900 (or your card name) - Additional Direct3D Settings There you will find "Max Frames to Render Ahead" and that option should be set to "0".One known problem is the "Protect against unknown threats" option in Panda AntiVirus and other similar products. You might have to uninstall them, not just disable. (Try to disable them first, of course) Note: adding Continuum to the ignore list of these programs might not help! You might have to completely remove these programs or make them not run at all when the computer starts up. Disabling them when already running might not help. Note: disabling any "heuristic" or "detect unknown viruses" options in anti-virus programs might help. Note: since you can't get rid of spyware without anti-spyware programs, you should do this to ensure best compatibility: 1) Install anti-spyware 2) Run it and clean the system 3) Uninstall anti-spyware If it still does not run after removing suspicious programs, you should use a "registry cleaner" program to clean the computer's registry (parts of the programs you uninstalled could still be there). Some other possible fixes to try: (Windows XP) Right-click Continuum and select Properties. Go to the "Compatibility" tab and check "Disable visual themes". Click OK and run Continuum normally.Create a new (Windows) user to play Continuum with Try playing with a user that does not have administrator rights.1) Install Continuum under an "administrator rights" account. DONT RUN IT AFTER INSTALL! 2) Share the installation directory with "change rights for ppl in network" (it will apply to other users in the computer too) 3) Log in with some other "limited rights" account and play the game as you always did in the past.It may also be possible that your computer has Data Execution Program (DEP) enabled for all programs. For Windows XP, right click on “My Computer” and follow “Properties > Advanced > Performance Settings > Data Execution Prevention” Once you have opened DEP, see if you have 'Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only', if so, check 'Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select'. Next add Continuum.exe to the list, and apply. Then you can go back to 'Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only' if you'd like, and it will load fine. For Vista and Windows 7, go into “Start > Computer > System Properties (button under the link bar) > Advanced System Settings (on the left navigation menu) > Performance (click settings)”. Now move over to the one that says “Data Execution Program”, and add Continuum to the list.See also Advanced: Continuum 100% CPU crash (reproducible) Continuum not starting up fix (sandboxie)
  13. I cannot connect to any servers, or I can't download the zones list, what can I do? If you are unable to connect to a server or zone: Make sure you download the latest zones listMake sure no firewall is blocking ContinuumIf you are on a school or corporative network, it is possible that the ports used by Continuum are blocked. In this case, it won't be possible for you to play.If you are having problems downloading the zones list: Make sure you are using valid directory servers List of currently available directory serversMake sure no firewall is blocking ContinuumSee also Some zones work, others don't; neither does zone list update, Firewall problem?
  14. Yep. I shut it down due to lack of updates from the programmer that allowed the MGCTF folks to abuse and cheat the system.

  16. Updated the installer with a zone.dat with the new ips. http://www.subspace.co/files/file/27-zonedat/ - for those who can't get dirservers to work for any reason and need to update their zone list.
  17. I've actually checked, and it was changing the value in the registry. I even manually changed it just to see if it would do anything, and it didn't seem to fix it.
  18. Ditto to that. I figured was just another bug with where Continuum was installed (Program Files write permission issues), but even after moving it to another drive it still does it.
  19. Updated
  20. It is currently kind of a test in progress server. It is being used for a project to create a new billing server in case the Priit situation is not resolved.
  21. Noone has heard from Priit. I just e-mailed him yet again, and Ghost Ship says he has also been e-mailing Priit regularly with no reply. We've survived without our main servers for ~2weeks before many years back, but the game was also in a state of growth and took it well.
  22. Seems from what I gather, DSB's host(s) weren't happy with the attack. Until they can put in some measures to prevent / alleviate the damage of future attacks, they are offline.
  23. Honestly at first thought I was surprised at Superb's failure to handle this. They are actually a rather large company backed by Level3 (one of US's biggest internet backbones, amazing for gaming), but it sounds like the attack was almost equivalent to a small datacenter hitting them. TBH, this has been something we have thought about and discussed a bit. A lot of our players work for ISPs and at datacenters; many even hosting zones and other servers from their work with very little notice. I also talked with 1 such player about the attack, and he agreed that Superb's reaction was one that many would have taken to have a quick and simple resolution. As a former Superb customer, I do know that they have montly options for support tickets. It is possible that Priit is not paying for any sort of support, thus they took whatever actions were needed in order to keep the stability of their network. We were casualties until Priit could be contacted, and the proper fixes then applied by either him, or the cost of support from them. There is some recent info that shows the servers will most likely be back on new IPs (with even the possibility of new ports). There is no real confirmation from Priit on this, but some data does support it. Personally I think it is time Priit got out of the zone hosting side of the house, and his zones found a new host. He was more responsive back in the days before he had to handle both the billers and the zones. Requests may have become too much of an annoyance to him, I don't know. But that is just my 2 cents, up to those zones to decide.
