  1. Yeah, I was about to say... Perhaps it's about time you switch host to something that you know... works.

lol edit: reading this thread made my asshole twitch.
  3. So yeah, who saw Germany destroy Australia? That was a funny match.
  4. Where's the proof of that? I've had the same D-Link router since 2003, and it works brilliantly. Considering I paid about GBP £100 for it, and it's been working near enough constantly for 7 years (often taking high strain) I think the need to extend the life of the router is kinda unnecessary.
  5. But isn't this completely contradictory to what I initially said? Either way, I'm not sure even how valid that point is. SSC Zone Acceptance Policy: I don't know, perhaps Hoch has persuaded the creators of the map, settings, graphics etc files within DSB that this is the best route to take for the zone, if that's the case then I feel you could be correct, otherwise it's not Hochs decision whether the zone is closed or not. Seeing as new zones jumping on the network are no longer a unanimous agreement between all council members (thank god), Hoch really only has limited power in not letting rip-off zones crop up. Personally, I honestly do see where Hoch is coming from, but I am not sure he's thought about what he is achieving. While this may be a good idea in other games that aren't player run, it's really not a good idea for this game. He would have to be extremely naive to think that somebody else isn't going to step in and use the settings and map files. While this can be a good thing (sprouting innovation and development within Subspace) it is probably going to be the check-mate for DSBs steady population. The amount of rip-off DSB zones that will crop up are sure to fragment the population enough to aggravate the player-base, leaving only sour faces and players pissed at the game that somebody didn't step in to stop Hoch. Either way, I honestly see either Hoch changing his mind, or this whole thing being over turned, one way or another. I wouldn't worry about it too much, worst case scenario it will end up in a server move (which isn't that big of a deal, really, seeing as DSB should be using DNS on the zone listing). This is also a good point.
  6. Ah, I was told a while ago that Hoch was footing the bill for both DSB and SSCI, which to me left only a few options.
  7. ... Geek.
  8. This was the only related part I could find. The other 95% of the post was Aras usual ranting bullshit. SSC can't really do anything, seeing as Hoch pays the server bills. This can go any of these three ways: Hoch decides not to close DSB, leaving nothing else to really happen. Hoch closes DSB, one way or another, leaving DSB to move to another server. Hoch steps down, and let's somebody else pay the bills/own the zone (best case scenario). This game is player run, and if the players want a zone to play in - that zone will come back one way or another. The council have no right to deny the players this request, or it's completely against everything the council stands for, and was created for.
  9. Have you even read this thread, or are you just carrying on with your babble ranting?
  10. It's a lazer, not a light saber.
  11. Ah well, either way Hoch can close the zone and somebody else will just re-open it... or he won't close the zone and this will all be forgotten about. Non issue then, I guess.
  12. Yeah, moving server is a pain in the arse, but there's nothing the council can do to help you other than ask Hoch to reconsider... Seeing as he's not listening to god knows how many players, I don't know how likely it is he will listen to the council. Either way, it's not like any action in Subspace is ever set in stone, and I'm sure there will be plenty of forewarning before he actually does pull the plug. If that is the case, it gives the devs and players of DSB time to organise a new zone to move to. Personally, I doubt he'll close it. If enough people rant and rave about it being closed down, I'm sure he'll reconsider or at least try to find somebody to carry on DSBs legacy. He seems like a reasonable enough person.
  13. I've found that Shure, Bose and Pioneer all have better sound than them overpriced dre beats.
  14. That's not what he's saying though. He's going to try and block anyone from making a new clone zone or taking over DSB. It's funny because he didn't even make DSB, he's just the guy that's been running it for a while. Too bad for him though, someone will step up and pay for a server, and DSB will keep on. And there's not a thing he can do about it. He is a Lawyer though, maybe he'll sue whoever takes over DSB. (HAHAHAHAHAHA) How exactly can Hoch stop anybody making a rip-off? If he thinks he can do such a thing, then he's delusional. If the zone dies, it's just as abandon-ware as Subspace and Continuum are. The only people stopping players using maps and settings are the creators of the maps and settings, not the zone owners. There are plenty of people around that are willing to shell out money for hosting, or are already hosting zones and are happy to host new zones. Ultimately, Hoch manages the zone, and to the best of my knowledge pays the fees for the server. If he's serious about shutting down the zone, then the most sensible thing for anybody to do would be set up a similar zone, and prepare it for when DSB does finally go offline. Personally, if Hoch is really preventing all of the development etcetera then this sounds like a god-send. Any developers who actually want to develop something new are free to. Top-end hosting is provided for free in the community by more than a few people, and it just leaves plenty of space for innovation. As I said, good luck.
  15. If the zone owners decided the zone should be closed, then let them close it. It's not a huge deal; this is a player-run game. If somebody else wants to step up and make a rip-off zone then there's literally nothing stopping them other than a few insignificant points. Personally, I'd rather see zones be shut down than dwindle and face flocks of bad management. Maybe this will also let some of the smaller zones get their chance at a population spike. Or whatever, really. Good luck.

  19. I don't really have any guidelines; provided I'm not footing a huge bill at the end of the month, I don't have police or the likes contacting me, and nobody is breaking any SSC policies etcetera... I'm quite lax. Other than banG, I see no point in having any powers in a zone. JoWiE however has created his own staff group in C&C called zonehost, which I imagine gives me a few powers but I can't see myself ever using any of them. The only things I check are: Bandwidth consumption (i.e. if 5gb an hour is flying out I'll message you to fix something, or I'll fix it myself) What's running (to make sure that SubSpace hosting is SubSpace only) Where SSH logins are originating from (to make sure it's only one person per login) Make sure that no netbanned players are banfree'd
  20. I don't really see how. Sites like TWForums/DSB/MG etc probably aren't going to move here, they all have their own communities. This game has shown time and time again that players will typically stick within their own community. Look at how rarely the regulars from the HS subforum post in the general forums here. In all honesty it will be a name change for the better. SSDL/GetContinuum should definitely be moved in with SSGN. It doesn't mean that those domains have to die, or even if the sites have to die but SSGN should hold all of their functionality, and my opinion is GetContinuum should just be a redirect to SSGN (once it gets onto it's feet). Potential new players (and returning old players) should be able to see straight away that this game still does have some kind of playerbase. The news posts and quick links to forums etc will show that.
  21. Thanks again, I decided to avoid the use of hashmaps because I've got a lot of other studying and didn't really feel like looking up on those methods, so instead I took the following approach to finding/deleting cards: public void delCard() { System.out.print("Please enter the student identification number:> "); idNumber = scan.next(); for (IdentityCard currentIdentityCard : IdentityCards) { if (currentIdentityCard == null) continue; String tempValue; tempValue = currentIdentityCard.getStudentID(); if (tempValue.equals(idNumber)) { System.out.println("Card was successfully found in the registry: "); System.out.println(currentIdentityCard.toString()); System.out.print("Are you sure you want to delete? [Y/N]"); userInput = scan.next(); if (userInput.equalsIgnoreCase("Y")) { System.out.println("Card was successfully removed from the registry"); IdentityCards.remove(currentIdentityCard); } if (userInput.equalsIgnoreCase("N")) { continue; } else System.out.println("The identification card was not found in the registry"); } System.out.println("Returning you to the Main Menu..."); Welcome(); } } I'm going to fiddle with a few ways of saving the ArrayList to a .dat file, and I'll let you know how things go. Thanks again for the assistance.
  22. Thanks for the answer, that's exactly what I was looking for. So with that in mind, what would be the best method for finding/deleting IdentityCard objects from the ArrayList? I looked at the Java API and contains() looks like it's what I should be using but I'm not sure. Here's what I was thinking... for (IdentityCard currentIdentityCard : IdentityCards) { if (currentIdentityCard == null) continue; if (currentIdentityCard.contains(idNumber) = 0) { System.out.println(currentIdentityCard); IdentityCards.remove(currentIdentityCard); System.out.println("Card was successfully removed from the registry"); Also, I'll need to save the ArrayList into a file, and read it from a file. I started reading up on how to do this, but I've not had a chance to finish it yet. public void storeData() { Path file = "Card.dat"; try { file.createNewFile(); } catch (FileAlreadyExists x) { System.err.format("file named %s already exists%n", file); openFile(); } catch (IOException x) { System.err.format("createFile error: %s%n", x); } // possibly include canWrite(); as further validation.. } OKay, the best way to handle this seems ObjectOutputStream what do you think?
  23. OKay, so I know a few Java programmers frequent here, so I've got a small question. The following code constructs an 'IdentityCard' with both get and set methods (I've not included the set methods)... public class IdentityCard { private String title; private String forename; private String surname; private String idNumber; private String dept; private String idContact; public IdentityCard(String title, String forename, String surname, String idNumber, String idContact, String dept) { this.title = title; this.forename = forename; this.surname = surname; this.idNumber = idNumber; this.idContact = idContact; this.dept = dept; } /* Get Methods for IdentityCard */ public String getTitle() { return title;} public String getForeName() { return forename;} public String getSurName() { return surname;} public String getStudentID() { return idNumber;} public String getDept() { return dept;} public String getContact() { return idContact;} I'll be creating an instance of IdentityCard with IdentityCard card = new IdentityCard (title, forename, surname, idNumber, dept); Then, each instance of card will be placed into a LinkedList. The problem I've run into is I need to then pull that instance of card from the LinkedList and make sense of it (when it's in a linkedlist it's just an object). I understand that I'll need to create a toString() method of some kind, but I'm not sure exactly how to do that. I've tried a few approaches, but this is the third programming assignment I've done today... and honestly, I can't be bothered. Any hints/tips would be hugely appreciated. The assignment is very incomplete, and I still need to format the code in a better way but you can view the full source code here: RegistrySystem.java IdentityCard.java Been up for 28 hours now. Time for a little sleep.
