  1. Short lesson here: Servers should never be used as workstations. When you run a server for anything, you set up a machine to do it, start it up, then walk away and never touch it again. The reasoning behind this: When you run different applications, and start and stop them, you change the configurations of the computer, no matter how miniscule. To the smallest degree, you need to cache memory or files to the hard drive, and the hard drive's data storage changes. The more stuff you run, the more you change your computer. Web browsers are notorius fiends, especially because of their integration with the operating system in a windows environment (explorer and internet explorer are basically the same thing.) What it boils down to is this: Computers don't change themselves, they react to user input. If continuum worked 2 weeks ago, and now it doesn't, then you changed something during that time. You can swear up and down that you didn't... but that's the same thing as swearing that you will never find the solution. Find what changed, fix it, and you will be straight.
  2. this cannot happen... and it definately can't be blamed on ploss. The game client will always make bombs and bullets hit the enemy on your screen locally, because it doesn't have time to send it to the server then receive the response back from the server, then display that response on your screen. You can never see what the other person sees, so you will never really know whether your bullets/bombs hit. No offense, but what you describe simply cannot happen... You are exaggerating quite a bit.
  3. Make sure you aren't changing the "profile" name instead of the "player" name. http://www.bargeld.us/storage/profile.gif
  4. If you have a geforce2 card, there are known issues with it and continuum....
  5. turn off stuff in the background... installing apps that run in the background can steal your bandwidth and cause small ploss like this. All of that aside.... 0.6% is NOTHING. You lose an average of 6 out of 1000 packets. Could be server game data, could be position data, could be checksums, could be weapons... but its minimal. The only time you really start noticing ploss is when it gets above 3 and 4 percent. I play on a wireless laptop with 2.5% s2c and I don't care.
  6. The lockout only lasts four hours, that way you don't need to contact any admins to have it reset.
  7. Try "avoid page flipping" and "no framerate limit" in the game's advanced options.
  8. In your player Profile, make sure your PLAYERNAME (not profile name) does not start with any invalid symbols, such as * & % etc, the name has to begin with a letter or number.

and what format? (should be saved as an 8 bit .bmp file with the default ss color palette.)
  10. It could also be a permissions problem for the location you are installing it. If the computer's administrator has disallowed permissions to write within the directories in question, then you won't be able to download any new zones/graphics/etc.
  11. Problems with web browsing means a problem with your DNS settings. If you were given DNS addresses by the isp, then enter them on each PC's network config.
  12. in the router make sure of a few things (I am the IT guy at work, so I know routers in general, but am not intimately familiar with your model, so some of this may not apply....) Start from scratch: hold the router's reset button for 10 secs before you begin the setup. According to the manual, the default LAN IP of the router is: 192.168.0.1 So go to Comp1 and set the IP to 192.168.0.2 and set Comp2 to 192.168.0.3 It is manditory that all computers on the submit have IPs beginning with 192.168.0 or they will not see each other. Use either computer to go to the router's config (web browse to 192.168.0.1) Gateway: The ISP provides this for you. Subnet: 255.255.255.0 (default) DNS: if the ISP hasn't told you anything about the DNS, then leave it blank. If they gave you DNS addresses (usually 2) then enter those in the router config. Set the router to have the ISP assign it's WAN IP. Do not try to specify the WAN IP of the router, unless directed otherwise by the ISP. Make sure that DHCP is OFF, you don't need to use it, and as you can see, it only complicates the issue. Use static IP's. Make sure that all static routing, port configs, etc are default (not set to anything.) On to the PC's... IPs: see above Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (the router is the gateway) DNS: same as above Make sure the workgroup names match. Save the PC setings and turn them OFF (do not restart) Save the router settings and then Logout. Then unplug it for 20 secs (do not use the reset button.) Turn the router on and let it finish doing its thing. Turn on the PCs. WHOALA!
  13. Usually, when your computer acts erratically after a reinstall of the OS, it means that you have a hardware problem somewhere. Check your device manager (control panel> system) and make sure there aren't any resource sharing problems with sound cards, network cards, etc.
  14. I private message'd myself the same link that you have in the screenshot, and it worked fine... no errors with anything.
  15. screenshot would help....
  16. It's actually a feature of continuum... tiled background for the chat window. Look in your Continuum directory for: chatbg (I'm not sure if it's a .bm2 or .bmp)
  17. At the main menu, hit control A make sure that you have "no framerate limit" and "avoid page flipping" checked.
  18. GoldenOrb: I deleted the thread in bug reporting and I will repeat my answer: Sounds like a temporary thing, just give it a couple days to fix itself. My main reason for saying that is because you have 0% ploss to your router (192.168.0.1) which means that you can't change anything on your PC to fix anything... everything works fine out to the router. Anything beyond your router means that the problem is out of your control, unless you feel like calling your ISP and complaining to them.
  19. Download it from here: http://beginners.subspace.net/downloads/continuum.exe
  20. Make sure your NAME doesn't start with a symbol. It must start with a number or Valid Character (NOT - _ * & etc) And make sure you change the PLAYER NAME, not the PROFILE NAME.
  21. yes.
  22. Frequency out of Range = Refresh rate is too high. My monitor does this too. Here's the fix: Right click your desktop, choose properties. On the top right hit Settings. On the bottom right, click Advanced. First, check the settings for Adapter, and lower the refresh rate to 60, if possible. Depending on your video card, you may have to change the refresh rate in a different place under the advanced area (try the tabs other than adapter.) Come back if it doesn't work, and remember... target refresh rate is 60 (or possibly lower is you have an LCD monitor.)
  23. See if you can change the IRQ (the instructions are in the previous message.)

    HELP

Probably temporary, just ride it out for a day and see what happens. If using dialup, hang up and reconnect.
  25. Open your case up, and remove the sound card. Turn the computer on and see that the sound card is gone, and it will set the network card to IRQ 11 automatically. Shut the Computer down, put the sound card back in, then boot the system again. It should See that 11 is in use and set it to something else (typically 5.) Then, right click "My Computer" and select "Properties" Choose the "Hardware" tab at the top. Look for any problems there.. if you see anything wierd, right click and choose properties. Here you should be able to change the IRQ if needed.
