Hyperspace population inflation must be stopped
Lynx replied to Static Burn's topic in General Discussion
Nah, he's saying that the other zones are fine because they're only lying a little bit. Hyperspace is bad because it's lying a LOT. -
When we used the original port, I believed it solved the issue on the majority of the directory servers. However, as there was a password used on the original (I believe a hash, which likely can't be re-generated) I think the remaining servers were disallowing the listing. This problem would probably be best resolved by going to the original port and simply waiting it out (I know it sucks, but hey, it's Subspace.) Or use another zone name on another port.

The only thing that bothers me with JS are 95% of the guys who use it. Other than that, it's fine.

Node is great, spent a lot of time with it this summer as we're using it while we move our prototypes into production -- took a *lot* of getting used to but the responsiveness of the applications is staggering. I'm still not sold on a browser based game, not yet at least but if it can be done then properly it certainly has many advantages. Are you planning on using Node for whatever it is that you're doing?

I recompiled the turfspawn module as a multi-threaded dll so it links the libraries statically. The directory bug has been fixed too. Enjoy

I couldn't change the DS port as Cheese used a password for DS originally - I think some of the other directory servers have a pretty long expiry time (mine is one day).

Edit: Fixed! Thanks MMav!

I'm completely against all this peering crap while it's broken, but the games dead so whatever.

People contribute to the game for reasons such as `I find it interesting` and `I find it fun making things`. Surprisingly however, they don't create things for the game because you're calling their hard work shit (even though DCME has been a godsend for the community - we used SSME before that...) You want DCME to be a little better? Check out the source code and change it (even though I think the functionality you're talking about is already there). Once you've done that, open the door - step outside, and get laid. DSB isn't everything, fag. Back to the topic; I've been coding another game now for the past few months (in C++, using OpenGL and no game engine) and I have a pretty good foundation on that. I'll be learning how to implement networking and learning some good security practices next semester. My initial plan was to actually create Subspace (this is a University assignment) but my tutor dissuaded me as he said I wouldn't have earned enough marks for it. Anyway, now that I've got most of the game-play down, I actually believe coming up with the first step in creating the client will be easy (although Jab has done the same with his client). The current source I can't release until after December (because of plagiarism concerns) however it's heavily commented and will come with a lot of materials on how to extend the client. I'm pretty confident I can get a Subspace clone up pretty easily; but of course that's not enough. I propose that if a new client is going to be made for Subspace, we need to have an open source effort (because nobody ever finishes anything around here, and we don't want another Priitk) but we need people who have the know-how who are willing to put the work in. That means somebody who has a good idea on how to handle security and networking who's willing to either code it, or write it down descriptively enough for somebody else to code (There are plenty of people who are bright enough to do this, even if their time is now limited). I intend on getting the ball rolling some time in February. Realistically, it probably won't be polished enough for a release for at least a year (assuming that real life doesn't get in the way) - which may even be too late. Of course, there are other attempts out there - and it's a shame that Jab has stopped work on his client, I figured that this thread might have pushed him towards working on it more... and not forgetting Richards client (closed source in an obscure language, however), and Discretion / Subspace 2 - and Cieu is working on something with the MS games development kit (XNA or something). Not sure what's happening with any of these now, though. It shows, though, that people are willing to contribute. tl;dr, I am also going to work on a client (in C++/OpenGL/OpenAL/Open Source) / my two cents.

I just don't see the point? This feature has removed core functionality, making the feature worthless.

1. People will move on. 2. No. 3. Come on these forums to read another 1,000 threads about how the game is dying; asking what's going to happen next and if anybody is doing anything to fight the inevitable.

I prefer the old TW map, but the new one isn't too bad. It makes for more balanced game play. The new Lev is really sucky, though.

So what networking model are you proposing?

If he knows nada about networking, why start with anything more complex than that?

Don't bother with the checks until you've got the basics down, or you'll be adding more work prematurely. Have a look at getting a basic chat client working first (using the method Cheese highlighted).

Thanks to Maverick all zones and services that were previously running under the *.krslynx.com domain are now running under the Subspace.net domain. Thus, any SSL zones (or Subspace related pages) I host now can have their own unlimited web-hosting under the subspace.net domain, and the directory server I run can also be accessed under ds1.subspace.net. As to not break anything everything will still work under the *.krslynx.com domain too. Enjoy, and thanks Mav!

The name will come eventually, I don't see why it matters. Everybody will just call it Subspace anyway. :-P
