  1. @Sama: Well I already made a few proposals to avoid such problems in the Name Reset thread: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=22730 Basically: - Make registration available at first to only a select few, and proceed in a hierarichal manner. Or rather have zones specify all the usernames that should be placed on the no-register/pre-register list, and also place racist and defamatory names on the no-register list. Then (assuming possible), transfer player data from the current biller to the new biller for other requested names, before eventually fully allowing the general public to register any other names. - Edit: Unless of course it's easier to do the reverse, and transfer all the player data first, and then do mass deletion of inactive or horded usernames and squads. In other words, it wouldn't completely compromise the safety of current zones and usernames by making the switch in a single night, but it would give time for zones to prepare and adjust beforehand. And like I said, if the username PriitK still has powers in TW and no one has removed it since, then that's the zone's own problem for not removing him after so many years of inactivity and compromising their own security (I think someone did manage to hack his username in the past if I'm correct -- so it's not to say that the current state of the zone is any safer).
  2. Well if a new reliable biller was to be provided with all or most zones on board, then I say go for it. But honestly, I keep seeing people try to go for backwards compatibility (for any project that involves fixing something of Priit's) ; I'd rather not have the player database transfered over, so that this would give a chance for both new players and old players to pick up some new aliases. And I'd also vote for getting rid of whoever's currently in charge of username and squadname resets, since as far as I've seen they do pretty much nothing and ignore every request nowadays. Also, automatically-reset-usernames should dissolve the entire squad even if there are still members on it. And of course, provide a limit on the number of squads a single user can create and be part of. I think there's quite a few feature ideas under the Accede forum that could be implemented, and I also think that the ?chat could be updated in several ways: - Expand the chat # limit - Perhaps an option to change the # to use the actual chat's name (e.g. techhelp:Player> blah blah) - Add the option of using the chat's name rather than number (;techhelp;hi!) - not sure if Subgame would allow this though I would say color-code the chats somehow (maybe the numbers/names), but I think that that would be a clientside feature rather than biller.
  3. Not really, there's pretty much only Bak working on the Discretion client, and 3 people working on the STF project. Zone development is an entirely separate sphere from those clients, and the reason why there's a lack of zone development is directly tied down to the fall of SubSpace as an entirety. Owners lack time, lack motivation to continue developping often because they're the only ones working on the zone, they're bored, aging, and have other things in life that are more important. There used to be people applying to be staff all the time, but nowadays finding people who are willing to actively staff is rare, for many of the same reasons: lack of time, lack of motivation. Being staff simply doesn't have the same prestige as it once used to have, and with a diminishing overall population and a general sense of despair and hopelessness for the game, this is becoming more strongly felt, especially within smaller zones but not excluding the larger ones. In Deva alone, I went from being a mere player to ish developper to a sysop within what to me was a very short time, and I'm now pretty much understanding what causes all the other zones to be abandoned : changing maps, adding news, hosting events, hosting a bot, fixing modules, maintaining websites, get players in the zone and play, etc. It's a really burdening task especially when you consider that I've an entire life (uni, job, friends, family...) outside this game. But don't get me wrong, I don't hate managing a zone, I rather enjoy certain aspects of it. And one thing that motivates me is the hope that one day a client such as Discretion will take over as the main game client. For the sceptics, only three years ago it was seen that ASSS could never become in any form the more dominant server, but nowadays it has pretty much superceded the use and development of bots+subgame, with the exception that Paleolithic zones such as TW will probably never make the switch unless the rest of SS ditches them. And I think that it's in the best interest of the entire community that major changes be made to our client and gameplay. Even Furcadia, by technicality the longest continuously running MMO, has received more (minor) updates then Continuum has and can still boast of having a more vibrantly active community than we have, since the developpers constantly promote the game. It basically boils back down to what Doc Flabby once said before : "the main problem is the people in the SS community who want to do good things are powerless, and the people in charge don't care." and Chambahs : "And then you've got other people, who would like to help, but cant.".
  4. kudos on the update! It's good to see some progress getting done, I look forward to the next release.

  6. Like I said, only a retard would let their three year old run around with candles, just as much as it would take a retard to let their kid run around with scissors or any other dangerous object. And no offense, you'd be plainly a really bad parent if you let any of that happen. Plus, your child should be in bed at that time since a child requires far more sleep than an adult does. K and I care why? It's a symbolic gesture addressed towards our governments, not our neighbours. Obviously they wouldn't give a fuck if your lights were out or not. Just as much as they wouldn't care if you drove a hummer or a smart car. If it was meant to provoke your neighbours to listen up and take action, Earth Hour would be promoting world-wide massively noisy and radical protests -- then at least the neighbours could hear and see you, and you'd get the added advantage of having extra media cover for destroying their entire front lawn and being sued in the process. -- But that's aside the point, because having your neighbour's vote will only go so far. Pressuring the current government to take action is far more effective than waiting until you have to get to the voting booth - and who knows if your neighbour is actually going to even go vote anyways. Also, there's a large difference with your kettle incident and Earth Hour, for one the plants (who don't work the same as "back in the day") are all aware and notified of the situation. It's the duty of participating cities to prepare themselves adequately for the event. But in comparison, it only totalled about a 5% decline during last year's event, and there were no reports of any power surges ("For a typical Saturday in March, on a Saturday night between the hours of 8 - 9 p.m., the city's load is already reduced drastically. During this time, the system has an ample supply of power and is designed to handle fluctuations in electricity use"). Plus, it's only all non-essential appliances that are meant to be turned off, so it's not like you're turning off every power grid of the country and then flicking the switch back on. If you don't care to participate, that's fine, but don't make up blatantly false statements and overgeneralizations.
  7. pwned. I think I may have a better solution. fixed.
  8. Won't look as stupid as all the people walking into their dresser tables and walls. It's called candles... But no offense, if you turn off your lights and don't prepare yourself whatsoever that you walk right into everything then you honestly deserve it.
  9. It's meant to promote awareness, not actually fix the problem. So Lynx will just look stupid with every single light on & all.
  10. Issue addressed here: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?s=&sh...st&p=203734 For Vista: 1) Try the above-mentioned suggestions in that post. 2) Disable the UAC (if you don't want to see #3 and #4) 3) Or do the following for both C:\ and C:\Program Files : 4) Or, you can try to make yourself an administrator by clicking on the start button. Then click on the profile icon (at the topmost right), and a window concerning User Accounts should show up. Click on "Change your account type", and set yourself to Administrator.
  11. Thanks, both these solutions work for me Though it says it loads everything, nothing shows up, and when connecting I get "Invalid login packet sequence". Edit: I did manage to get it to connect, with everything loaded, but then it crashed I assume because it failed to load the map, Login response- 0: Login Successful. version: 134 regform: 1 news checksum: -1732087797 PACKET: Packet Sent, 0x01: Arena Login [12:34:24] . UNKNOWN packet, type=0x22 size=75 SOUND POSITION, VELOCITY: 0.000000, 0.000000 Started position routine. No valid map for checksum. I then decided to manually place the map (i.e. copy paste from Continuum folder) and it gets rid of the map checksum error. But the client still crashes a few seconds later. (Edit: after the 80th attempt, I finally got it fully connected to a zone! -- but short lived and crashed maybe a minute or two later)
  12. Hmm, I get the following error message when trying to start it (ignore/retry just make it crash):
  13. Choose one: - Project (Sub)Space - Pyxlz (Sub)Space - PSPACE But pretty cool you could get it to compile Doc, I'll give it a spin later on. I know the previous version had trouble loading non-standard maps (i.e with lvz, special tiles, or regions), hence why I had accidentally came to the original conclusion that it couldn't connect to ASSS zones. But does it connect to zones at all?
  14. heh I just checked this it, pretty nifty, except the window screen was way too tall, so I couldn't see the bottom, nor if I was typing at all. That, plus like Sama said, the ship crashes into a wall and stays stuck there (unless you wiggle your way out, or go through the wall itself).
  15. As Mage keeps loving to point out, population lately hasn't been very high (by Deva standards), especially in the last two weeks. I know part of the problem is not having a permanent bot sit in the zone and tell others when people enter the zone, but it's unfortunately been like that since September or October. Rather, I'm looking for ways to both attract new players and get regular players back in the zone again; make the zone appealing. Some of my own ideas (in no particular order) for changes would be: 1. One beef I've got is a suggestion that I had made myself a long time ago: new players gain a starter incentive. Currently, new players receive 20M credits, which is pretty much enough to buy anything right off the bat. Not everyone likes to use their credits, so this number just grows and the credits are wasted unless they spend a lot. If the initial amount was reduced, it might push players to want to gain more credits (for either buying or reccing purposes). 2. Add new buyables (such as ?buy scorereset, and other random things) but rotate which ones are available, so that not all buyables are available at once all the time. 3. Although soccer is only a second-class element in Deva's gameplay, it might be nice to receive a certain amount of credits when a player makes a goal. 4. Increase credits rewarded per kill. (so that you don't just earn high credits after winning a flag game that lasts 3 hours and you gotta leave anyway -- and someone who didn't even play comes on and steals jp) 5. Make players who ballkill in centre loose some credits. 6. Give credit rewards to entire teams (per kill?) to encourage team play. 7. Reduce flag time (or something else that would encourage people to win and play more often. e.g. maybe add a bonus amount of credits, factoring current jackpot and number of players, for winning the game under X amount of time.) Any other suggestions or feedback welcomed.

  19. Once again, each browser has advantages and disadvantages (if you don't code websites at all, you would never realize the actual differences except what's on the end-user interface and what you read in the news). Like I said in the last thread, just because Firefox has a fanriding and passes the Acid test, it doesn't mean that it fully respects W3C standards any more than IE. Actually, I would honestly say that Opera is a better browser in this aspect, even though I don't use it. But I don't see any FF fans switching to Opera; they'd rather sit around and act superior to IE. It really just all comes down to convenience and preference.
  20. In the default ASSS setup, does the record feature actually work? I've never been able to get it to do anything.
  21. Yes, people still use IE at a ratio of about 45% IE, 45% FF, and 10% other (according to W3C January 2009). But the statistics will vary per website. And no, IE isn't a dead technology, but I'm not going to go into details since there are quite a number of threads like this that end up being a duel between browserXfanboy versus browserYfanboy.
  22. If a full name reset were to occur, I would imagine there would be a no-reset list, and it would be both player and zone's responsibility to provide either name+password (for verifiability), or a reason for that name not to be reset. The situation would be no different than if the biller were to go offline tomorrow; should a user hack into the name 'PriitK', than that's the zone's responsibility for failing to remove PriitK's powers when he hasn't been inside his own zone for six years. A second solution would be to offer early registration in a hierarchical manner, so that names are unlikely to be stolen and zones & al have a chance to make the necessary changes before fully switching to a second playerbase.
  23. The problem with both SubSpace and Continuum is that there is no way to limit the amount of profiles a user can have at a time. A lot of modern games will only store a maximum of five profiles at a time (often per-login, and per-email), which does contribute to limiting the amount of usernames being created. But what really limits account creation in these games is the fact that players have to work for items, levels, and whatnots in order to gain reputation and strength. As a result, people won't switch as often to a new profile in order to regain all their stuff. In Continuum, the only zone partially exploiting the latter would be Hyperspace. In other words, there's no failsafe for account creation as everything in Continuum is pre-configured to jump in and go. So as long as this exists, name trading will persist. And as long as any account has over 300 hours of gameplay (or is banned), then it won't be reset for several years. If it was created early enough when PriitK added the feature, then even names with under 100 hours of usage won't be reset. Squads on the other hand have a problem wherein a single user can create thousands of squadnames and keep them as long as the username still remains existing. And to top the list of problems, it's become increasingly difficult to get in contact with any biller op to even simply retrieve a name that was somehow lost. Placing a ticket and contacting them has proven an impossible task, hence the amount of complaints that are submitted in this very forum. But careless as they are, they lock the threads and try to hide away the problems. Imo, might as well change the top warning to "SSC Contacts: No, you'll never be unbanned and never get your user/squadname back" and it wouldn't make a difference. All in all, if it were possible, I would still advocate for a full name reset.
  24. A 50$ tax? Ouch...
  25. No prob. Once the walltiles are messed, trying to edit, import, or view them will have the same effect.
