If all else fails, try setting your resolution in your profile rather than in the menu. i.e. profile -> resolution (change default to w/e)

Stacking teams is just getting lame not to mention longtime bugs.

K well the original poster is referring to TW, more specifically, warbird bullets which are one-hit kill. And as surprising as it may sound, TW has used random damage (Bullet:ExactDamage) in the past, but it annoyed people and they switched, but they've been going back and forth everytime they tamper with the settings. Everytime they would attempt to reuse random damage I would notice immediately, since you can see yourself eating the bullet. But otherwise, it's as its been stated before, even if you fire at someone, on their screen it may not appear as if they were hit at all due to lag factors between the two clients. -
Glad you could isolate the file and get it fixed. Not necessarily. Having run both Vista and XP with a desktop color depth of 32bit, when I set Continuum to anything lower, it severely reduces its performance. On Windows 98SE I didn't have that problem, though I think it used 24bit instead, I don't quite remember. Anyhow, it's been known for quite a while that if Continuum doesn't match up with the Desktop settings, it might cause performance issues on certain setups.
-
Did you at least try setting your Color Depth to your desktop's? Because whether or not zones use 8, 16, 24, or 32bit doesn't matter. If you're not using the same depth as your desktop, then you're likely to experience (performance) issues. Otherwise: - Restart computer - uninstall/reinstall. You also never specified if this is a recurring issue, or something that just happened. Did you edit any of Continuum's default graphics (e.g. gradient.bm2)? What are your system specs?
-
1. View -> Advanced Options -> Software Emulation (check this) 2. Options -> Graphics -> Color Depth (same as desktop; usually 32bits) 3. Resolution -> Default
-
Nope, unfortunately there's no way to have a specific profile be loaded per zone basis. You have to manually change it yourself before logging in (either by changing it in the profiles section, or using the scroll button over your name in the main continuum menu).

The stats page is now back up and fully functional again! 'Nuff said: http://www.devazone.net/stats.php

Click on the character at the right... http://nigradamus.mybrute.com/cellule The reason why it says "Type Here" is to entice other players to create new characters, which automatically become pupils of the original referer. Anyhow, I have an account on the original French version, could easily crush it^

hmm so this would explain why there was suddenly 325 people on today

Cool, works well for me. Curiousity though, how come chat doesn't work? (besides pub chat; iirc they all worked in an older version)
-
You may also want to check out APNG, which is quite similar to MNG, except that its library size is smaller, and it supports older png files. I don't exactly follow the debate for either format, but I just thought I'd throw that out there as well.

Using the valid channels will just get the issue ignored for a longer period of time though.

SubSpace is a dead client, and has been so since the fall of Virgin Interactive Entertainment (VIE) back in 1997, when all the servers were pulled offline. A player named PrittK created a new client called Continuum, which was and still is closed-source, but improved on security were SubSpace was flawed. Priit also remade the biller, but barely touched the SubSpace servers. Eventually a player named Grelminar created an open-source server called ASSS (A Small Subspace Server), which is now in the process of replacing the use of Subgame as the dominant server and bots. Most bot cores are also open-source. However, the Continuum client has barely been updated since 2003, which has inevitably led to the game's gradual demise over the years. - But it's not all bad; since roughly around 2005, people have been discussing the creation of new clients, and it's recently become a very hot topic. Currently there are two major projects: the first, Discretion, was created by Bak, and ressembles a lot like the classic game, except it's been much improved and expanded upon. The second, Subspace2, is a collaborative project started by Doc Flabby which aims to create a Subspace-like game, but with the addition of 3D graphics and a bunch of other features. Both are open sourced and encourage others to help with development. There are also several chat clients out there, a few being open-source. To sum it up, the Continuum client, Subgame server, the SSC biller, and Priit's directory server are all closed-source. If you were hoping for access to those, then there's no chance. You should instead invest your time in looking into some of the new client developments, as well as the ASSS server. Pretty much all of the current bots use the old SubSpace protocol to access the servers, which required a lot of trial and error to figure it out as the Subgame server was closed-source. And unless they're granted system operator (sysop) priviledges, they won't do much on their own. From my knowledge, Infantry Online uses a very similar client-zone structure, so it should be possible to create bots for it as well. (Though why exactly do you need any?) But you'd need to figure out what it takes for a player to connect, and your bot would have to be designed to forward that information as well, on top of being able to interact back and forth with the server without getting disconnected. - All bots used in SubSpace, like MervBot, TWCore, and Hybrid, are specifically designed for it, so it'd be much easier to completely remake your own bot rather than modify these ones. I know there was once a separate branch of Infantry Online called Free Infantry, I don't know what ever happened to that, but it means that someone out there might already have the information you'd need. (anyhow, someone with better knowledge on bots feel free to correct me)

They're not exactly planning to make a completely new biller seeing how Snrrrub already has one; this is just a suggestions thread for things that could potentially be included in a biller. As Polix implied in his last post, it's not so much the new biller that's the issue, but zones switching to the new biller, or more importantly, zones hosted by Priit that pose a problem (i.e. where the "ditching" idea comes in). I think he's worried that Priit might consider it backstabbing, and will most likely regard the whole endeavour as a security risk to his current job. Who knows how he'd react should he even notice.

Pretty nifty Is there any plan on being able to handle bombs in online play? Also, it seems as if speccing/unspeccing isn't handled by the client (i.e. if someone else goes to spec, they'll still appear playing. If you go to play/unspec while they 'appear' playing, you literally become them.)

Well I don't know anything about the iPhone, its SDK, or how its applications work, but it's definitely not a very far-fetched idea. As for the Palm OS and PSP chat clients, they were designed for ASSS, not subgame. So it's just a question of whether or not the server accepts the client. If you added the Oracle feature, then that's a plus, but it's not a necessary component to designing a chat client.
-
To sum up everyone's very helpful and unambiguous posts: there's no chance that Continuum itself will ever be available on either the iPod or iPhone. As it is fundamentally designed for use only on Windows due to its heavy reliance on DirectX, getting it to run on any other platform is a near-impossible task. However, this shouldn't discredit the possibility for a chat client to be made available, as there are already several made available for both Windows and Linux, one for Palm OS, and another one for the PSP (the latter two having been made by Smong).

That was pretty intense It would be nice if the camera could be rotated depending on the direction the ship is facing (like as in when the ship is going downwards, adjust the camera to make it look as if they're going forward). But nice work tho.

The version of Continuum shouldn't be any relevant, but it's 0.40 at any rate - it also affects all chat clients as well (subchat, starlight). While the zones are all 1.4.4 (Continuum 0.4 only). The players enter the zones without any problem, but registration information isn't being passed on to the SSC biller somehow (from what I can tell). Why else would it prompt the message again when entering (a different zone)? - I also don't know what's involved in the registration form being different on SSCA, but I suspect it has a role in all this.
-
Well, since it's apparently impossible to get registered on the elitist sscouncil forum, I would like to bring attention an issue for all zones hosted on SSCA which I've noticed for quite a while now, but originally just thought it was Continuum being an arse and d/cing as usual. (It has probably been a bug since the beginning however.) I've informed Snrrrub exactly a month ago and he hasn't done anything to solve the issue (so for the purpose of not having it forgotten, I'm placing the issue here). It's becoming quite problematic for new and old users who want to play the game, but don't exactly realize what's the cause; they just keep getting kicked out and eventually give up playing.
-
Good to know it's bug free, I've added it to deva's website. Hopefully other zone websites will follow suite. Ps, can you fix Discretion's link to point either towards the subforum or towards the sourceforge page? And also remove the Star Warzone website from the list since it's a dead link.

I started off as a newbie and managed to figure out how to easily port from Subgame to ASSS and run a zone within a few days (it would have been a day if it weren't for a specific modification I had to make to get it to run on Windows 98SE). Honestly, I don't think you've ever even tried to make the effort to learn any of how it works; it's really not as complicated as you always make it sound. The only complicated part is learning how to write modules; but if you don't need to, or if you prefer using bots then there's not much to complain about. Otherwise it's just knowing where to put settings, staff info, and how to configure the server. But all the files are conveniently named after their purpose (so place staff in staff.conf, global server information in global.conf, etc.). If you run into trouble, just ask questions. If you never ask, you'll never get an answer. But seriously, if the notorious Mage+ can learn its basic functionality and ask questions, then there's absolutely no excuse that no other newb can learn it. When Snrrrub first offered to host Devastation he had the misconception that ASSS could do pretty much anything. One of the problems was that he wanted me to rewrite all of our modules into Python, but I had to point out that the use of Python is limited in quite a number of aspects. ASSS isn't perfect, but in comparison to Subgame it already offers a lot more possibilies. It could easily be argued that Subgame needs a lot of work if not much more (it can be far more easily hacked from my experience working with both). False, bots can be just as useful as the server itself. One advantage of using a bot within an ASSS zone is that even if the plugin is buggy, at worse you'll just crash the bot, and not the entire zone. In Deva, we also use the bot as a means for the server to communicate on chat channels. Other zones use bots for other purposes, so it's false to assume that bots are entirely useless in ASSS zones. If your bot sends specific commands such as *arena hi, then all it requires is the addition of the module entitled sgcompat (subgame compatibility), which you just have to uncomment from the modules.conf file, and it allows subgame-specific commands to work. Otherwise, it takes two seconds to modify the plugin and recompile it so that it sends ?aa rather than *arena. No one's forcing pre-existing zones to switch over to ASSS, they can keep their bots and plugins and run them on either subgame or ASSS. But you keep coming back to the idea that no one will code, blah blah blah. That's just an excuse for not bothering to try; and it's often these same people that rely on absolutely everyone else to do all their work for them. Not just mods/plugins, but settings, maps, updates, websites, etc. Somewhere down the line you've got to learn to take your own responsibility. If there was no future for new zones to emerge, then you wouldn't have a single SSA, SSXA, SSCA zone out there. Just because you're not willing to learn anything because you're phobic, doesn't necessarily mean that absolutely everyone else thinks like you. How often do you ever visit other zones? Because from what I've seen, people are definitely willing to learn and do what they can with what they have for their own zones. And there still are a number of people willing to help you with modules: as an example, tcsoccerman, smong, myself, Dr Brain, D1st0rt, among others have at least helped one other person who asked for help with their zone and/or modules. So this idea that no one helps anymore is completely unfounded and untrue. I don't even consider myself even a half-ass coder, I never learnt C before I eventually leaped into the world of writing modules. I simply looked at how other people wrote theirs, started off by modifying stuff here and there, read tutorials on the wiki, and now I can write basic modules myself.

I would support any of the three clients: Bak's Discretion, Pyxlz's PSpace, or Snrrrub's client. Though I have a preference for Discretion rather than the latter two - and it's one of the few reasons why I pushed to have Devastation move away from Subgame. And my beef with Snrrrub's client will be that he's most likely going to keep it closed sourced, meaning that we'll be making another leep into a client we can't be sure will remain actively developped. Would I use a hacked up Subgame? No, I really wouldn't. Even if you bloated your old copy with new features, I think it's best to stick with ASSS. Would I use a hacked up Continuum? Depends, what exactly are you advancing that's different than in the current client?
