Nice bumping, but Darth Will's not using either Vista or Windows 7. Check out his other thread he created at the same time: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=23303

Dunno, Japan also puts a lot of emphasis on not only the grades, but also on the schools themselves. If you're in a certain school, it gives off a lot of information, knowing that it's a private school or not, how well it fairs compared to others, entrance exams, how many graduates will end up successfully entering such and such universities, etc. Without having a university degree of some sort, then you're not garanteed very much (this kind of thinking causes problems for members of the older generation - as unis do judge age). And as the school you're attending corelates with your grades, students (and parents who overpush them) in Japan will often go to jukus (afterschool school) and do lots of extracurricular activities just to cram as much information in their heads as possible. Heck, they even have lots of 'games' for the DS and such which are focused on practicing for their SATs, TOEIC, and all them other tests I forgot the names. Like in the West, absolutely none of it will actually garantee success in life, but it does play an important social factor. If China is anything alike, then it'll also have specific schools focused on specific subjects. So their Math may not actually be that much more advanced on average (the high school I attended in Japan was about par with my Canadian curriculum if not a bit behind in Math). And I should also point out that not only students who go overseas will often face lots of pressure from their family back home to be successful, but they'll often come from families which can afford to put their child in some of the better schools, and it's often recommended and encouraged by the school system that the better students go study abroad. In a very Asian fashion, the "rest" are just subtly brushed aside, in order to maintain the school's 'prestige', or more precisely, cover up the 'flaws'.

This thread had its chance.

Oh I wasn't paying attention, the layout's broken only in IE7 for me.
-
Just wanted to throw this in, but the "Other Styles" feature is broken. It's not adding anything to my post, rather I appear to be directly editing the menu itself. Also, dunno what you did, but forum layout is all broken in IE8 and IE7. Oh and the Search feature returns the results in reverse... It's giving me the oldest related threads and posts rather than the newest.

To me the community is important, but it's not the hook factor itself. As a newbie to a zone, I don't honestly care who's in it or what people are saying in pub, those are just things that become a plus later on. More specifically, what gets me liking a zone is its uniqueness, and the activeness of the players in it.1 A zone full of speccers is not only dull, but a huge turn off.2 When it comes to smaller zones, what I like is the friendliness of the people & staff.3 If you're never greeted in any form, it makes you feel as if you're unwelcomed to their apparent closed group.4 Settings and balance also play an important key role to the gameplay; if I never make a single kill and end up with a kill-death ratio of 0:20,5 or if I'm spec-hunted by people with a huge advantage over me as a new player,6 then I'm not inclined to return anytime soon (there's a difference between making it competitive, and having settings/upgrades/buyables that render the gameplay impossible for newcomers). When it comes to soccer/powerball style zones, I prefer the action to be more fast-paced, and the map a little smaller, with settings that aren't dull. 1. Trench Wars, Hyperspace, Extreme Games, Death Star Battle, Metal Gear (back in the day) 2. Desert Storm, Metal Gear 3. 17th Parallel, Devastation, Alpha West SVS, & a few others 4. Halo, Fusion, A Small WarZone 5. T3 The Gauntlet 6. Mystic Kingdom

Well so far it works much better in IE8. There's still a problem with weird scrolling in IE7 (i.e. the edit button). I still can't permanently minimize entire forums (in all browsers including Opera, except Firefox). There's still a problem with the print feature, and still CSS errors. I'm not sure if the PM via profile bug is fully fixed, because it works for me now, but I'm not using Firefox (where I originally noticed it in RC1). But these are all minor issues, so so far so good.

I use RSS feeds, but I really dislike SSForum's, it's just lacking overall and defeats the point of using a feed. For a better RSS feed, I would recommend taking a look at MGB's Server Help Forum's syndicated feed.

And the list never ends... Why are half my private messages locked while the other half aren't? Why can I still send private messages while being over my quota? Why am I suddenly over my quota when I used to be merely around 50%? http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/1606/overquota.png Why does the RSS feed display threads that were created months ago and mark them as new messages everytime someone bumps the thread? The Print feature gives this error in both IE and FF: Error: Event.observe is not a function Source File: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?app=forums&module=forums§ion=printtopic&client=printer&f=7&t=23303 Line: 147 Why is there a reCaptcha field for when I change my e-mail, but not for changing my password?

You've completely lost me. You're talking about banners... What does security even have to do with this? Plus you're not even using Vista, so obviously there won't be any 'security' tab... To create a banner, first you have to open Continuum, go to Edit/Create banner. Press the new button, draw something, and then 'save as' the banner into your Continuum folder (usually C:\Program Files\Continuum\). To display your banner in a zone, log in, press ESC, then press B. The banner menu will show up. Select a banner that you have by using PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN, then press ENTER to use that banner. Are you saving your banners in the proper folder? If the banner isn't located anywhere within Continuum's folder, then of course it won't show up.

Staff are only human, so yes, they are allowed to talk about random stuff. Is it ethical? That's another matter. Are they allowed to infect and track someone else's computer? Depends on the laws of your country; I'm not Australian, so I couldn't say. (Assuming that anything within Continuum, the server, bots, or biller aren't used against a player, it's technically outside anyone here's control)

Commands.hlp, Continuum040Setup.exe, Server Kit v6

One problem with that: the .zip file returns an HTTP 406 NOT ACCEPTABLE error message, meaning that the file will fail to be downloaded by the browser. -

Looks like a pair of black dice, but I'd kinda have to agree with Syrith.

I'll still stick by the fact that reCaptcha is a terrible idea, since you only frustrate actual users, while bots can bypass it with ease. It also doesn't help that ReCaptcha is pretty much the number one most widely used captcha system around, so any exploit gives a single bot access to hundreds of thousands of websites. And to also bluntly point out, one thing that both MineGoBoom's forum and the SSForum have in common is reCaptcha, and as you may have noticed, both the server help forum and ssforum received spam from the exact same bot(s).

Well to point out, ALL of their websites are being attacked by it. It only takes a few seconds to check the source of all the websites to find that they're full of malicious scripts, even GetContinuum. The latter is the one that keeps getting restored the most often, as has been said in the other thread. The scripts so far have mainly attempted to add a hidden list of websites (aka adsttnmq1/sdioyslkjs2), but it won't be much longer, as indicated by the current source of getcontinuum.com, that the website will become a fake anti-virus webpage that attempts to install multiple viruses on your computer. It's honestly really dissapointing to see such a slow response towards fixing this issue after now more than a month of having the websites hacked.

Somehow that seems to have done the trick.
