  1. I've heard about ppl getting the 'entering arena' spontaniously before. It's a wierd bug, I would guess it's due to a router messing up and sending bad packets(?)
  2. Is the monitor your limiting factor?
  3. It's just alsways been my policy... If the OS is screwed up, you normally don't 'fix' it. System restore, driver re-installs, virus scans, and ad-ware scans... sure do 'em. But when you have probs with explorer.exe or a persistant BSOD or 'illegal operations'. Then you know the OS is hosed. I just never feel confidant working on a machine with a patched up OS, and usually, you will still have little residual problems that you will have to live with. If you think about it, it broke because of something, and you still don't know what that is. OS re-installs can be annoying, but after you do it a few times, it isn't so bad.
  4. if he had re-installed the OS, he woulda been done a week ago...
  5. check this: http://www.ssforum.net/c/index.php?showtopic=6649
  6. First, check this out: http://beginners.subspace.net/quick.php you may also be having common problems that many new players run into, so check this out if you are still having probs: http://www.ssforum.net/c/index.php?showforum=195
  7. turn off gamma correction in the game options (might be called "adjust brightness")
  8. show me a screenshot of the task manager of a healthy windows machine without explorer.exe running. I double-dog dare ya...
  9. re-download and install the skin?
  10. explorer.exe should be 'in use' and the file *shouldn't* copy. 8(
  11. So you can't click the start button for the start menu and you have no desktop icons? btw it's Iexplorer.exe explorer.exe is always running (it's a core windows process). In versions of windows prior to win2k, if explorer.exe crashed, or was not running... then you essentially had no operating system. If explorer.exe froze, then your OS would crash. If you couldn't run it, then your pc wouldn't boot. Sounds like time for a re-install of the OS.
  12. are you running linux or OSX?
  13. Try changng the color depth in the game options. Use 8 bit color.
  14. Do you see continuum.exe in the process list?
  15. Make sure your name starts with a letter or number, no symbols.
  16. Me too.
  17. Notice that the traces don't take the same route. The most important part is that the new path to the server has the following 2 hops (which is where your lag originates) 10 157.130.143.226 theplanet-gw.customer.alter.net 0.0 60 110 460 13 69.56.227.178 69-56-227-178.theplanet.com 0.0 60 130 660 If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the same boat, except that I get specced out of the game when I spike. It's been going on for about 8 months, every 5-30 mins. I've had the cable Co. come out... they found a problem, fixed it, and my spikes were still there. Because of the hassle of scheduling the appointment, I gave up. I haven't been playing much lately, so I deal with it. As far as the ?ping and ?lag thing... you are imagining things Those commands aren't data intensive enough to cause you to lag by using them.
  18. check out the options for 'adjust brightness' use/don't use it...
  19. quick solution, gotta love 'em! - Closed -
  20. just out of curiousity... LCD monitor?
  21. There is no s!@#$%^&*? I don't care whether the last hop has no packetloss or not... Reported ploss, like those 3, indicate problems.
  22. The 3 'other zones' you mention have nothing to do with this trace... A trace is basically showing the path from point A to point B. When you 'trace' a zone, you begin recording the information about each 'hop' or piece of equipment (routers, etc.) along the path. The 3 with bad packetloss are NOT the 3 servers you mentioned, they are 3 routers or other networking equipment, in a row, between you and your destination.
  23. see the packetloss? based on those traces, I would say you shouldn't even be able to play at all! Ask a sysop of the zone to do a *info on you and check your packetloss, as they can get more detailed stats than the trace can. Based on the traces though, I think that disconnections are to be expected. I would also like to mention that 59 kbps is about the same as 7 kB/sec (dial-up speed)... if you have a 600kbps connection, you should be able to reach close to 70 kB/sec (I think you meant kiloBYTEs (kB), not kiloBITs (kb).) Regardless, that's not really an UBER connection to the internet... most cable and DSL services can provide anywhere from 100-300 kB/sec downloads (you have 60-70 kB/sec).
  24. I have this exact same problem at home, although my disconnections only occur every 10-30 mins. I have had the cable co. come out to fix it... they found one prob, but it didn't, ultimately, fix the problem. I would suggest leaving a trace up overnight, or for a few hours and see what results you get.
  25. solved - closed
