Read Samapico's suggestion more closely. It's still listing item types the player doesn't have, so long as the player has left over slots for it.

Reliability is another SSD concern, so make sure your backup system is bulletproof, as you will get no warning before a failure occurs. I recommend CrashPlan. Despite this concern, SSDs are very much worth it.

I think you'll get more mileage out of a SSD than a processor upgrade. Should look into those next time you're looking for a speed boost. Especially now that you've got a fast SATA motherboard.

It's not a bad idea. Actually I'll go further and say it's a good idea. Problem is finding someone to program it.

They're extremely useful devices for certain uses, but for the average user they're not as good as they're cracked up to be. I'll be buying a few for my company whenever they're generally available (I missed out on the first round of 'em) to act as USB to Ethernet converters. It's not really a good target for a SS server. SubGame isn't really possible, and I don't even know if ASSS would compile properly to an ARM target.

Back up. I'll watch the other thread, but in the future it's probably better to assume I have on idea what's going on.

Actually this is the first I've heard about any problem. I don't check the forums much, and I'm never in game. Someone sent me an email last night that let me know it was broken, which is why I checked here. I don't have time to look into it now, but If someone lets me know a good revision number, I'll roll hscore back and recompile things tonight.

Don't get lulled into a false sense of security. The battle may have been won, but the war is far from over. Until the scope of the US government is scaled back, these sort of bills will pop up again and again. And don't forget the potential to put crazy things in unrelated bills. Like putting gold & silver regulation into the healthcare bill (see http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2010/07/health-care-bill-inserts-tracking-of.html & http://www.numismast...ArticleId=11843).

I couldn't agree with this more. Player driven content is SubSpace. You could make a multiplayer 2d spaceship game, but it's not SS without the player-run zones (it'd be Cosmic Rift). Just keep that in mind when forging ahead with your project. We wish you all the best regardless of whether you choose to go for the SS clone or the CR clone. I hope you'll keep us aprised.

The /usr and /etc folders rarely change, so they shouldn't be a big deal. If they're on their own partitions, then making them read only on boot is a simple matter of altering /etc/fstab, but it's probably not necessary to go even that far. It's /home, /tmp and /var that are the real write locations. You can put /tmp into a ramdisk easily. The /home and /var folders are up to you, though.

I honestly think cheese's estimate of 50k is low. So unless you're thinking of sinking serious cash into this, you should move on.

Hyperspace population inflation must be stopped
Dr Brain replied to Static Burn's topic in General Discussion
The SSC bringing the threat of force against HS would be awesome. That's because there's no scenario where HS would be forced to stop without the arena sharing zones also being forced to stop (since any rationale for force that applied to HS applies doubly to them). Since I've always planned to remove the fake pop when the other zones stop, I get my way. I think this is why no one has officially complained about HS, because they know it'd just wind up on EG/CZ/PB. Also, HS is one of 3-4 big zones that can artifically boost its population (PB is already doing so, part of my complaint). Adding +100 to compensate is retarded, because the other smaller (and bigger, in the case of TW, as you mentioned) zones don't have that luxury. It'd just kill the game faster. Which, incedentally, is what EG/CZ/PB are doing: killing the game while trying to hold on to their dwindling player base. EDIT: it's not fair. That's the whole reason I'm doing this, to show just how unfair it is, and make sure those evil zones don't get any boost from the tricks they play. The more people complain about HS, the more likely something will be done against EG/CZ/PB. -
The whole point of ?flag was to keep newbies off the flagging frequencies.

Hyperspace population inflation must be stopped
Dr Brain replied to Static Burn's topic in General Discussion
To be clear, this is not a minor bug. This is a major bug. The biggest bug in SS, bar none. Also, I'd like to point out that the same people complaining about how newbies aren't playing are the ones behind this population boost. Yes, that very same population boost which only affects newbies. Coincidence? Want newbies to stick around? Maybe you shouldn't take away their one tool to find a good zone. -

The +1000 only shows up when there are people actually playing the zone. If they're all in spec it'll just report the population normally. -
Hyperspace population inflation must be stopped

I agree that population inflation is a bad thing. Hence the reason behind this whole thing. Work on getting CZ/PB/EG to stop it. -

Powerball is running ASSS, and they specifically had to alter the code to increase their reported population. -
Hyperspace population inflation must be stopped

In the end, it doesn't matter what you think. It only matters what I think. And I think it's staying until the EG/CZ/PB people stop inflating their population counts. If you want HS to stop, you're better off focusing your efforts there. -
Ah, it was pending approval. Maybe that's why it caught my eye. I usually don't read his posts.

I have always believed (rightly or wrongly) that the reason PriitK won't release the source to Continuum is a legal reason rather than anything else. I think it would put him at risk from lawsuits (and I'm not just talking about whoever owns the rights to SS, there are other factors to consider), and there's no way he'd put himself in that position for a 15 year old game. The security rationale sounds good, but it's simply not true. He's released enough info over the years to people to allow them to completely crack the continuum security. Enough so that passing the source onto another person wouldn't be any more risky than what he's already done. There has to be another reason behind his source hoarding. Those people that think he doesn't care are idiots. He pays more per month for hosting this game than anyone else. If he didn't care, he wouldn't shell out the money for it.

I've promised to stop as soon as the other zones stop inflating their population counts (see the other thread for the promise). I won't stop before.
