Let's assume I know what I'm talking about
Dr Brain replied to Lone Outlaw's topic in General Discussion
Now that everything is split off... we can continue without fear of cluttering a valuable topic. The chat client doesn't connect to the biller. Continuum doesn't connect to the biller either. No client does. That's an incorrect assumption on your part. Continuum doesn't have a banning system. You're incorrectly assuming the banning system is specific to continuum. It's not. It's specific to the biller and to a lesser extent the servers (only for local bans). Even banfrees happen on the biller. You're assuming (notice a trend here?) that silverchat allows players to create names. It doesn't. No Chatnet client may register new names (it can't provide enough registration information to the biller, so no provision is made for registering new names in the protocol). You're assuming tons of things based on the fact that starlight let you "bypass" a ban. If you want to ask technical details that's fine. But don't go assuming crazy crazy things. P.S. look up the definition of assumption. -
Falconeer/Lone Outlaw is wrong. Nothing anyone here says matters, unless YOU agree with it. Nothing good was ever designed by a committee.

SilverChat: SS Continuum Chat Client (and source code)

Split off irrelevancies to http://www.subspace.co/topic/26828-lets-assume-i-know-what-im-talking-about/ Didn't want to drag down the discussion of this client. -

You're assuming again. I think you don't know what that word means. -
This should be quite easy, since the incoming packet's warpflash will tell you when to plop down an LVZ image. Hardest part is managing the LVZ images, and you can get code to do that from the FTL modules.

For the purposes of discussion, the programmer of Continuum is dead. The truth is somewhat more complicated, but comes to the same thing. That said, it's probably possible to hack the main menu (though this is beyond my skill). But nothing after you press the play button.

No one can recompile the game, unfortunately. I also don't think it supports Cyrillic letters, though I could be wrong.

I've never taken the advertising rule to mean that you can't ever talk about another zone. Though I know this is how most of the zones interpret this rule. There is a a type of blatant advertising that isn't technically spamming. It's when some guy comes in, sits in spec, and starts talking about how HS is inferior to X zone and how X zone has all these cool features. Near the end of the guy's spiel he asks "how do I get into a ship" indicating that he's never even played HS before. In my opinion, it's actually more annoying than spamming. That's why this rule is there. This rule doesn't cover (non annoying) honest discussions.
-
Doesn't that pretty much rule out anyone from HS?

You clearly have no idea what the word assumption means. Saying something is an assumption doesn't make it less of an assumption.

There you go assuming things again. You have no idea what you're talking about. Rest easy knowing that this chat client in no way jeopardizes your netban. -

Screen shots look great. -
Pretty much everything you said was wrong. Except where you called me a lazy jerk with no time. That was true. Good luck cheese. I agree with nl that limiting your scope will help.

Game was made 17 years ago. Computers are 2^(17/1.5)=2580 times as powerful today, according to Moore's law. Serously, who cares about the overhead? Even if a VM ran 200 times slower, it'd be fast enough (and a web search suggests the average program is between 1.5x and 20x slower).
-
Only indirectly. Stupidity isn't a bannable offense, but it's the cause behind everything that is.

Yes. I think this is the best place to start from: http://www.minegoboom.com/server/howto.html

I take it you've never played SSCE Hyperspace.

Having read the GPL and having understood the implications of the GPL are two very different things, and that difference is the reason I brought up the subject. I wanted to make sure JoWie and Jabjabjab understood what they were doing and had reasons for doing so. All other things being equal, yes, but you're assuming someone will be writing changes without regard to the license. That's simply not true. I, for one, no longer contribute to GPL projects, as I believe they're eroding our freedoms as programmers. Anyway, you know what you're doing so I won't harp on about it any more. Sorry for the distraction.
-
Despite what the GNU foundation might have you believe, the GPL is not free as in libre, as you cannot do whatever you want with it. The AGPL restricts even more of your rights. If you understand this and are choosing it for political reasons, then I won't post further on the subject. But most software developers don't understand the GPL and choose it because it's the cool thing to do. If you're looking to open source to make your work useful to others (rather than just as a marketing gimmick), the BSD license (or similar) is a better choice.

I have no compunction about deleting/locking his posts in the HS forums, but I try not to do that on the rest of the board.
-
None of those people want to talk to you. I'm locking this topic.

Spelling either of their names correctly would be a good place to start.
