I don't have any personal objection to a new item set. The problem is a practical one: trusting someone with database access is extremely risky.

For technical reasons, it's extremely difficult to remove items from player ships and offer a refund. It requires some direct database manipulation while the zone is offline. Because of that, cycling items (or any regular removal of items) is not really feasible.
  3. You want to periodically shut down player's favorite zones to *increase* population? How is this a good idea?

Did you have someone (or some group) in mind?
  5. I don't disagree, but quite frankly, I don't have time to make new content, and I doubt arnk or d1 have any more time than I. A reset's as good as you're going to get.

    Reset!

Money, ship and exp have been reset. Zone news will be updated shortly.
  7. Looks like reset time.
  8. I assume you'll be stopping MERVBot hosting for the same reason, then?
  9. Someone might create a zone worth playing, thereby increasing the bandwidth load on the server above 0.
  10. Swift, not if you want to get paid for it.
  11. ...you're here, aren't you?
  12. That's right LC, it there has to be synergy within the modernized framework of the hierarchical designators.
  13. I got my MS and now one of my classmates and I are in business for ourselves.
  14. True, but since you're also saying goodbye to 95% of the population, I doubt this will help the game survive.
  15. Latency is the problem for server-side everything. Also zones like trench wars probably exceed today's computing capabilities, especially when you consider the physical server is almost always hosting several zones at once. And an encryption key doesn't prevent memory hacking. Also, disassembling an open source program is significantly easier, since you know what everything looks like on the inside. Once you've disassembled that key, there's no reason you can't make your very own "legit client". And server side checks only get you so far. You can only check what comes back to the server. There's a whole slew of things you can't check. Bots also become a huge problem.
  16. The sad fact is that computing, latency and bandwidth still limit multiplayer real-time open-source games. You can't ignore the cheating aspects that can spring up around an open source game. Cheating nearly killed this game a decade ago, and no open sounce proposal has sufficiently addressed this (saying we'll fix it when it comes up is not addressing the problem). In a nutshell, no open source is a great idea, but focusing on it detracts from the ultimate goal of a fun game.

I type dvorak, but I don't typically recommend it for others. 64-bit OSes have become painless enough for everyone, though. IPv6 won't take off until it's supported by major ISPs. Comcast (my ISP) has been taking steps in that direction, but they've yet to make it available to their general users.

Do you have any of those, cheese?
  19. You missed the fundamental part of SS in that list: individual run zones and more broadly, community driven content. Without that, it's Cosmic Rift 2, as many have said.
  20. For your edification, it means a small amount. Iota is a good synonym.
  21. It's a rule of reporting in SS: if there are no screen shots, it didn't happen. I think you'll do better with generating excitement if you wait to post anything more until you can really show it off. Talking about hugely diverse platforms that haven't been implemented makes me think you have no idea about where this will go (and makes me sad).
  22. 6'3", and I'm the short one in my family.
  23. Apology accepted. I'm sorry if I was too hard on you. It would be good to have hard data on ASSS's population limits.
  24. Someone should split off this argument, as it has no bearing on this thread. Where are the logs I asked for, then? They're not in that thread. Subgame data, yes. I couldn't care less about subgame, as I haven't run it in nearly a decade. Yes, I asked you specifically for logs of the problem. You didn't. None. I didn't bother because you never posted real results, only unfounded conclusions that ASSS didn't work. You didn't post the data I requested, yet you expect us to believe your results. P.S. who is this Grem? Perhaps you mean Grel? No one did duplicate your results. You also never posted data to back up your assertions. You've used personal attacks in this thread. I'm going to take it personally.
