you would say that. No, I would say that. Oh wait, I already did: "post rating features are stupid"
-
Grr I just tried to post and it sent me to a 404 page... And cuz the fast reply is lamed, the browser won't remember what I wrote :/ But anyhow, they appear on every single page of the forum, except the last one which only appears on the front page. It's possible that Firefox isn't actually ignoring the moz-border-radius property, but it's non-standard, and definitely bad practice to use browser-specific code (something that IE was largely criticized for). Oh, and Firefox 3.0.10.
-
Well not errors, but warnings: Oh, and I entirely disagree with the poster who wrote "Compatibility mode brings on more problems than it is worth.". There's more issues running the forum as IE8 without it than with it.
-
At least I'm not the only one who doesn't like it Not to mention that basically all the buttons in the quickedit are broken from what I can tell in IE8 (haven't tested in any other). Oh, and pretty much all the emoticons are broken. I can't permanently minimize an entire set of forums (e.g. squads) [all browsers except FF-based ones]. + everything Polix already mentioned. Oh, and the RSS feed makes me angry, since it defaults to Hyperspace's forum only, even if I'm viewing General Discussion. I also think the reputation feature and the post rating features are stupid (why am I even allowed to rate myself?). The search feature makes me angry as it doesn't search the current forum (edit: well if you scroll all the way at the bottom there's a forum search feature... but why isn't this available in the more accessible top one?). The fast reply isn't fast at all, since you still have to load an entire WYSIWYG editor each time you click on it. There's an annoying scrolling issue when using the preview button in the full editor. But all that aside, there's a few features that I do enjoy. Edit2: Yeah, basically I dislike every part of the theme. I feel they tried way too hard to make it look and feel like a pseudo wikipedia+youtube+facebook website. Edit3: I can't even report posts: Edit4: IE7 has an annoying scrolling issue when using the edit feature (the edit feature also being all messed up). Also, a fix for IE8 users is to run the forum in compatibility mode (the broken page icon at the top, to the right of the link bar). And Firefox reports 5 CSS errors.

Works fine for me. You're probably missing the proper codec to play it.

Need some help writing a small history on Subspace
Hakaku replied to Zephyd's topic in General Discussion
Hmm, then the only other thing I can recommend is my own two posts here and here, which basically explains what happened to SubSpace and who owns the rights to it. Is there anything specific you're looking for? Maybe the ssfwiki or ASSS wiki can help. But otherwise, the wayback machine does miracles (e.g. subspace.net or sscentral.com) -

I'm surprised no one mentioned this: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=20484 -
Infected regions: Madagascar ^Definite win

Does it completely freeze? Or does it freeze for some time then load the game? Try clicking the 'play' button again and let us know if it enters a zone.
-
A 'new' keyboard alone won't necessarily solve the issue, even newer models are prone to the same problems. Make sure you check out & research different keyboards before purchasing one.
-
It runs fine on Windows 7. And if you should so happen to encounter any issues for whatever reason, the official release of Windows 7 will be able to run Windows XP through a virtual machine.

The likelihood of H1N1 mutating with H5N1 is extremely low, since H1N1 spreads through humans, while H5N1 spreads through animals. Although it's possible that someone who contracted H1N1, and then gets in extremely close prolonged & repetitive contact with infected birds (saliva, regurgitation, or excrements), could potentially have them both recombine to form a new strain, once again, as with any potentiality, there's nothing saying that it would become more dangerous than H1N1 alone (H5N1 may actually hinder the spreadibility of the new influenza). What you should be worried about is if H5N1 recombines itself with more common strains of H1N2 and H3N2, which already affect and can be spread via mammals, poultry, and humans.

Definitely weird... The same thing happens for me, except that all the information (name, description, ip, port) are different... There's also a second zone, with no name, and 283 players...
-
Yeah I get it too, not just on the forum, but the entire sscouncil.com website as well. Actually, for that matter, it's not just the suspicious script at the bottom of the source, but there's weird numbers inserted before every paragraph (), and an entire list of malicious websites embedded near the end. It also seems to want to force the browser towards the bottom of the page.

Can I just point out that Cosmic Rift sucked to start out with? They never had the playerbase before they went pay-to-play, so it was inevitable that without attracting enough users the population would die. At its peak, it had an average of maybe 20 players (from what I saw), that's far less than the poorly marketed SubSpace had. Also, it was never marketed alone, since it was part of the Sony Station Pass games, so already there was competition between two other games for the same players. I'm kind of curious to see how Star Trek DAC will fair out, and whether or not they'll go pay-to-play or keep it at 10$ purchase. If they're successful, then there's no reason that RS couldn't take the chance with a top-down multiplayer space action shooter as well.

Achieving interoperability with another program, which can be considered fair use, does not necessarily protect your work. In many cases, reverse engineering has been acceptable to circumvent restrictions for use, but it hasn't been so for access. Section 4 of SubSpace's license also indicates "you may not modify the server software", which is exactly what Priit did with Subgame 'as distributed by Virgin'. The server itself is one infringement, accessing the server also ties up Continuum in a potential legal issue. Nonetheless, to make my point slightly more clear, even though RapidShare could potentially acquire Continuum, they would still likely be infringing on SubSpace's original license, making it useless to acquire one without the other. The best way to go for them, as I stated earlier, would be to independantly create their own game, as Rak'kar had done, rather than fully clone or even buy out SubSpace/Continuum. Edit: Also, I should point out that it's extremely unlikely that Priit will be sold out to them, for reasons hinted in the New SSC Biller thread.
-
@ Doc Flabby May I point out the following? Continuum is already invalidated by the original SubSpace copyright.
-
As long as they keep the game to some extent free and retain the 'subspace feel' to it, then I'd be okay. When I tried out Rak'kar's game in the past, Galactic Melee, just the fact that it maintained some of the old ss features and feel, along with some more modernised stuff, made me honestly feel willing to ditch Continuum over it. Assuming RapidShare goes the same way rather than choosing to go the way of creating a more loyal clone such as Discretion, I would still be okay with it. Actually, RapidShare could buy out Galactic Melee if they wanted, and avoid this whole SubSpace kafuffle. And I guess Doc Flabby does bring good points about the licensing of a lot of software. But there is absolutely nothing saying that they have to be 100% loyal to what currently exists, and I think that that's where the problem lies. Evidently it would be nice if the current state of our community-run-ish game could be maintained as is, it's simply not feasible, neither for us, nor for them. (It's not entirely true that we're community run, as this game has always been controlled by but a mere few users. The community itself has had barely any say in most of what's been done over the years. Less now, but that's also tied to the rapidly declining state of our game.) If you're worried TW will go down, or whatever other zone, I can assuredly tell you that it's extremely unlikely to happen. Getting in contact with Priit is an entire issue itself, trying to buy out everything he controls/owns right now is a whole second issue (which I doubt RS will go through with). In the end, there's really no say in any of this. Even if we accept or not their offer, Continuum & all will still remain a separate entity from their own game. If we don't accept their offer, it's likely that they may choose to still write their own game while including some aspects of SubSpace. If we do accept their offer, what of it? There's nothing any of us here can do, they'd have to still do pretty much everything down to the legal issues themselves.

What does your ?lag say? Are you on wireless? Can you post a Trace of the zone (via the menu)?

Hmm, well I can't say much concerning your previous experience, but there have been no other reported cases of viruses being sent via the download of a map in-game (the client should crash if a map file is corrupted). Though if this was way back then, then you were likely using the SubSpace client, today we use the Continuum client, which was designed with security in mind. Although I was never around at that time, I do know that it was technically possible for VIE zone staff members to silently retrieve a file off a player's computer or put a file on their computer; this feature has long been removed from the server. On modern Subgame servers, uploading/downloading files is strictly restricted between the system operator and the server. In ASSS (A Small Subspace Server) zones, it's the same situation as the latter, but the zone may permit players to send files to each other : in order to receive a file you'd have to first accept it (i.e. non-silent). And I think you need to make an important distinction here. Technically zones have and still do run bots on their servers or on separate servers that connect to the zone. But these so-called bots are basically false players, they're designed to perform long and repetitive tasks in a very short amount of time, such as hosting games and events, or checking around for cheaters. Players can technically load their own bot into a zone if it permits it, but it won't be able to do anything a standard player can't do unless it's otherwise given specific priviledges. And as bots are essentially players, they can't cause any harm to a player's computer, nor can they even conceivable attack the game client itself. So if a player really wants revenge that bad over an antiquated 2d game, then they'll take their anger to the playing field Cheating though is an entirely different issue. No game goes without eventually being broken by kids with a lot of free time; it is afterall what partly caused the original demise of VIE SubSpace. Continuum has over the years been pretty good about this, since the client was designed to improve what VIE failed. And as with pretty much any online multiplayer game, there exists several banning methods for both zone and biller staff, thus eliminating problematic players. These cheats pretty much just consist(ed) of manipulating the gameplay, such as gaining weapons, going through walls, firing unlimited weapons... But they're not very difficult to detect, and with the most recent client release, 0.40, many of these issues were greatly reduced. It's kind of like comparing the Olympics, there's still people trying to cheat the system, but at least we got the methods to denounce their use of drugs on the gaming field. I hope this all makes sense and addresses some of your concerns. Let me know if you've got other questions or concerns.

Actually, Priit left Kazaa right before it started getting into a big legal mess, and went to work on Skype, so it's unlikely that he was affected monetarily by any of those issues. Btw, that article I quoted listed all currencies in USD, not EEK, so millionaire really did mean millionaire by american standards. Is Priit a millionaire? Probable at this point. Is he a multimillionaire? Can't say for sure. Is he a multibillionaire? No, because Skype only sold for 2.6billion, so there's no way Priit could have ever achieved that point.

Honestly, there's very little to no risk in running Continuum. At worse, it could be possible for a virus to be downloaded with the installer if you don't download the game from a reputably safe source (i.e. http://www.getcontinuum.com), but this is very unlikely to happen. The only other case I can think of is Windows Vista users disabling the UAC (User Account Control), which does technically render the operating system a little less secure, though there is an alternative method from using this which has been mentioned in quite a number of threads before, so ultimately this one would be the user's fault and not Continuum's (though the UAC is highly overrated). But in all these cases, the problems are external to the game itself, so there is no risk in running Continuum itself. If you do get a virus while Continuum happens to be installed on your operating system, you should in all seriousness consider that the virus (malware, spyware, adware, trojan...) came from a different source (e.g. Via browsing the web, downloading other content, etc), or was the result of a different security problem.

The article was written on November 9th, 2005. Skype was sold for $2.6 billion. Include his other involvements such as Kazaa and ASI, he must already be there, or be pretty close to it.
