  2. Well no offense, but your post wasn't much more appropriate. Besides the OP, everyone quote "derailed" that thread.
  3. Well, sirens in Japan went off last night, but not because of Chile. A magnitude 7.0 earthquake rattled Okinawa, but they've since liften the tsunami warnings.
  4. You should really stick to posting once over at http://forums.minegoboom.com/, rather than always cross posting multiple times.
  5. Well, there should already be descriptions right above each line :S

  8. Revision control is collaborative, and it can easily be used and integrated in a real-time environment. It doesn't work against these, all it does is merely add an extra level of control that permits you to see differences between more than one version; how you use it and what permissions you grant users is your choice. Wouldn't it be easier just to roll back changes if ever someone decided to spazz out and ruin the entire map live? Or what about working with someone, wouldn't it be nice to see their changes highlighted on the map rather than guessing what they did? (what if you both live in different time zones?) This way you don't solely have to rely on constantly saving the map and sending changes to users online, while ?messaging others to tell them what you did.
  9. Why not just implement something like trac changes (aka revision control)? You could then review all the changes made and either accept or reject the changes, or continue editing.
  10. That's only required for States^

    ASSS

Hmm, you're right, Snrrrub did release a patch + peer module to get it working on ASSS. Thanks for pointing that out. I just remember seeing him test it out with Chaos, since the eventual plan was to give a way for Subgame zones to link up with ASSS counterparts, but I hadn't heard of any of it since. Also, the TW-EG bridge isn't a bridge at all. It's nothing more than a bot using the *sendto command, which isn't implemented in ASSS, but is possible.

    ASSS

Better than this would be a way to link up zones rather than forming one superzone (something that Snrrrub knows how to do but won't share with anyone). The problem with forming one superzone is that different zones rely on different modules. Instability in one module would bring the entire thing down, a risk that can be only multiplied the more modules you load up.
  14. Congrats btw.
  15. Have you ever been outside of Québec? This seems to be a recurrent theme with you guys, you're not the only French Canadians in Canada you know. But fine, keep sending English pamphlets, but don't expect those with an interest in French to care about you, or for monolinguals to even care to recognize your language. You're only hurting your own situation more rather than remedying it. Additionally, that's a pretty dumb comment about the money, since it's all the taxpayers of Canada who all pay for your pseudo "double-sized paper". I suppose you've never actually worked in a bilingual environment have you? Try visiting Ottawa one day. Apparently everything and everyone there are twice the size since two languages are clearly too much to bare. And be my guest in continuing to promote the province of Quebec as an English-speaking paradise to the rest of the world, while increasing the number of disintegrated immigrants in your province who arrive with only passable English competency. Yes, this is your province. Not everyone has the money to travel and live abroad. If you want anglophones to be willing to feel confident to understand and talk to you on their visits, then teach them the real language from the start, at their schools. Your province generates the teachers, you have the influence to move away from the French elitism of the fake standard. Your politicians merely reinforce negative sentiments to the rest of Canada. You can't assume that what goes on in your province, no matter how petty it seems, doesn't have negative repercussions elsewhere. Your politicians, laws, news, policies, and the such form your interprovincial and national image. You democratically elected your politicians, and as a people, you're morally responsible for how they conduct themselves. I am not, however, judging you on your political image, I'm judging you based on your actions, your continued distortion of historical facts, day-to-day interactions with people from your province, etc. Those that are condecending are not merely your politicians. Those that are racist are not merely some radicals you see commenting on youtube videos. I'm not saying every Quebecer is a horrible person, there's lots of nice people, but you can't claim to be better than Parisians in any aspect whatsoever, especially in situations that deal with anglophones, and even moreso I would say with your alienation of francophones outside your province, for which you've already demonstrated your ignorance. Slowly dying? Statistics or it never happened. The use of the French language in Canada has gone up over the last century, not down. Quebec might be experiencing a low birth rate at the moment, but birth rate is not the same thing as loss of language. Also, I'm not judging your politicians based on wanting to uphold the French language. That has nothing to do with anything. Being condecending towards people and actively enforcing a language are not the same thing.
  16. Take a look at what other similar websites have written in their own terms of service/policies. It will give you a pretty rough idea of what you may want to choose to include and how to appropriately lay out the information. That's really the best advice that anyone can give you. You really have to know what type of website you're building, who your target audience is, what priviledges they're given, how they can license their content, whether their private information is protected, whether marketers can spam users with promotional advertisements, whether third parties are allowed to collect information and statistics, on what premise can users be banned, etc. Start off small, and keep updating your TOS and policies when you feel that you need to make changes (also make sure to note that the terms and whatnot may change at any time blablabla).
  17. There are no swear words in Canadian French that specifically come from the words 'cross' or 'holy grail', although câlisse ((holy) chalice) is close enough to the latter. The actual French word 'graal' (Holy Grail) is rare in common speech, which would explain why it never made it as a swear word. While 'croix' (cross) doesn't make it because it can't really be deformed any further, which may be partly due to competition with its homophone 'croire' (to believe); '(il) croit/cré'.
  18. Alright, I feel the need to make this post since it seems to be a recurrent excuse to the question: What killed Deva? Even though we partly went over this last summer, quite a number of you are still really quick to make the accusation that what killed Deva was the switch to ASSS. For tl;dr, scrap that philosophy and ask yourself How can I help?. http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/3949/dd04.png First of all, what is ASSS? It's a server intended to replace and improve upon the functionality of subgame and bots. Why did we switch to it? If you're thinking that we switched to it to be innovative and pioneers of SubSpace... then you're wrong. We switch to it on three different premises. The original reason why Hallowed be thy name had been working on it was to provide a better solution for the frequent bot down times we were having between 2006-2007. Essentially, it was for stability. The second reason was because no one else would host the bot. XDOOM was the only one hosting it; I don't have the means, and no one else was available when we needed them. Bots have become a dying cause. The third and final reason was out of necessity. After SSCI went out, there were no other SSC hosts. Snrrrub, who only hosts ASSS, kindly offered and I'm grateful to him for helping save Deva. Move back to Subgame! Moving back to Subgame won't change a thing. Mervbot is a lost cause now with little to no developpers. Considering Devastation's plugins were unconventionally designed in C#, that leaves no developpers at all, and without a reliable and accessible host, there's no way to have the bot reliably hosted. So basically, moving back to Subgame would gain nothing. You'll have a map, flags, and that's about it. http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/8346/dd03o.png So what killed the population? Simply put, a lot of factors did. We've been running ASSS for about a year, but even less if you include the fact that I was hosting the bot for half of that time. The population died much earlier than the switch itself. Deva's population did nothing but dwindle from the 30-mark we were able to achieve in 2006, and by 2008, it basically dropped close to nil. The reason is primarily due to inactivity. Both XDOOM and tm_master were, out of obligations and real life duties, unable to tend to the zone as much, and by the end of summer, XDOOM officially left the zone. By this time, I would say, the only remaining staff was myself and very periodic Gibbit, and I think Sri as a bot op. The zone suffered a blow because no one was able to actively promote the zone or work on it, a lot of former players left all at once, and the playerbase was not sufficient enough to support itself. Rather than continuing to play the blame game, for which we're all to blame, you should be asking how you can help. I've said this before, I'm not a one man show. Mapping, bases, graphics, ideas are all a great start. Promoting, hosting events, engaging other players to come visit the zone. Just because we're on ASSS doesn't mean you need to know how to code - this has never changed. http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3382/dd01.png How to submit maps/bases? Maps and bases should conform to Devastation's general appeal. Don't copy other zones or material from them. We like colour, bases with a lot of space to maneuver, maps that aren't entirely bland or perfectly symmetrical. Don't make bases too long, otherwise it's too discouraging for players. Just use an editor like DCME and upload your map here in a new thread or send it to me in-game via ?sendfile , or upload it to your private arena if you have one (?putmap ). If you prefer email, send your file(s) to http://services.nexodyne.com/email/icon/Z19COKOIJG1H7lc%3D/rQHQy50%3D/R01haWw%3D/0/image.png. How do I become mod? I'm going to be blunt, if I never see you in the zone, don't count on it. But first and foremost, ask tm_master. As long as he's around, he'll still be the primary person to go to about becoming staff. He knows how to add staff, so don't let him tell you that he doesn't. If you have to remind him, the quick way is to have him private message you with the command "/?setgroup -p mod" (replace -p with -a if it's for a single arena only). You can also post on this topic to be reviewed and considered. As a mod, you need to set an example to other players. Promote the zone and have fun. Don't abuse of your powers or ruin the gameplay for others. If you don't know what you can do, type ?commands to get a list of available commands, and type ?c to obtain a description of what a specific command does. http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/3995/dd02.png How can I help write modules/plugins? If you prefer to work with bots, you're free to do so and design plugins and events for them, and run them on your own. Just contact me and we can hook your bot up to work with the zone. (Yes, bots still work on ASSS, who would've guessed? ) As for modules, since they're an integral part of the server, mistakes could lead to zone crashing so you need to debug them and assure that they're safe to use. I won't teach you how to write a module, for that you'll need to visit the server forum and asss wiki for more information, guides, and tutorials. If you need specific headers to integrate with other Devastation features like buyables and credits, just get in contact with me. If you need help understanding or debugging your module, or have a few questions, feel free to ask me or ask on the server help forum. Just note that I will not do all the work for you (as harsh as that may sound).
  19. Yeah, I'm dead serious Audry. You might like to think you're all ponies and pixie-dust perfect, but take a step off cloud nine and you might actually notice that your society has flaws too, one of the most cited ones being racism. It's nice that some people in Québec City "try" to accomodate anglophones. Hey, you're only the capital and Quebec's top tourism priority afterall. Maybe if you stopped sending English-only pamphlets to those who live outside of your province you'd be able to notice a difference. Or maybe if you would stop stigmatizing anglophones trying to speak French. Or maybe if you would actually teach them real conversational Canadian French as opposed to that fake unusable literary 'international' French. Or maybe if your politicians would stop acting so condecending on every single political occasion. And you wonder why people don't try?
  21. ...So, what happened to it?
  22. Well yes, Devastation's on the directory server list, and there are a few SSA zones up not on the list. He's still hosting the same zones he was hosting prior to his leave from SubSpace, but he's inactive and not taking in any new zones. And due to his inactivity I would strongly recommend against anyone getting hosted by him, this coming from the sysop of the only SSCA zone still up.
  23. Snrrrub still manages SSCA, yes, but I would remove it from the list since he's not actively hosting anyone anymore. Btw L.C., do you provide ASSS hosting on Windows or Linux, or either? Might want to note that.
  24. So as many have already noticed, both credits and buyables have been down for some time now. This was caused when Devastation's website was changed servers and the mysql database got upgraded. Thanks to T-Man and Polix, most of this was resolved, now we're just waiting on Snrrrub to hopefully upgrade the zone's mysql version for compatibility. How long will this be? Who knows. In the meantime, I've set up an alternative flat file database scheme to load and save player credits. I've still got to update the buy module accordingly (done!), but it's a start. Please report any bugs or zone crashes.
