Dare to click for Hak's opinionated rambling.

This just in: --------------- Newsflash! ASSS can run bots! You can just paste your entire .cfg into your arena file! or even link it! or even split it into ten thousand files! You can already sort ?getsettings by categories aka keywords! You can copy pasta all your staff into the staff file! You can chuck all your lvl and lvz files into your map folder! So difficult! *omgwtfbbq fan girl scream and faint* ---------------

The update? It's that Starlight has gone the way of Subchat2: discontinued. If you're caught in a ban, then you should be contacting the appropriate people. Bans aren't necessarily based merely on usernames.

Other zones crashing should definitely not be taken as a norm. Devastation for example rarely crashes despite using a fair number of customized modules. The exceptions being when I introduce new and relatively untested modules, where the crashing often occurs as a result of minor inattentive mistakes. Concerning your own crashing, the best way to find out what's causing the deadlock is to start disabling modules one by one to find out which one is at fault. Does it still occur if you disable all the Python modules? Yeah, I've never really taken the time to debug it. Though I can tell you this, security:enc_cont fails player logins two out of three times on Windows. But due to its closed source nature, it's not possible for me to tell you what's wrong other than that.

I just want to add that the Python error could have likely also been resolved by editing the asss.bat file and adding this line before the first 'GOTO START'. (Replace 'Python25' with the appropriate path) SET PYTHONPATH=C:\Python25\Lib

Thing is, 'oldest' (and even its alternative, 'longest-running') is really quite subjective. Do you count Sniper? Do you count SubSpace before it was officially released? Do you count it since public beta testing? Depending on how you look at it, SubSpace/Continuum is easily rivaled by other games like Meridian 59, Furcadia, The Realm Online, and Ultima Online.

What naming convention? The likelihood of ASSS becoming Subgame is nil for reasons mentioned a bajillion times. Pretty much all the commands in Subgame are available through sg_compat, except for a select useless few such as *putnews. Though I shouldn't be too hasty in saying that, it might actually be in sg_compat. Bots can run fine on ASSS, you just need to make a few adjustments. Probably the most important one is granting them 'unlimitedchat'. Other than that, before you make any transition of any sort, you should spend lots of time testing and debugging stuff just in case. Switching from bot plugins to server modules can come in time when you're ready. PS: *super and *ufo are gone and will not be supported by ASSS. EDIT: One of them was to add all the sg_compat commands into the groupdef directory. Another one was to create a separate group for bots, that includes 'unlimitedchat' and 'broadcastbot', so that new players will already be better predisposed to using bots in their zones, and so that they don't do like me, and sysop the bot. I think it took me a few months to figure these things out, when it should have never in the first place.

It depends on what kind of tasks your bots are used for. When I switched Devastation over to ASSS, the transition was definitely not seamless, but that's mainly because there was literally no information on how to run bots properly on ASSS. I suggested changes for the next version that would greatly help newcomers, but alas, I doubt Dr Brain will implement any of them. Depending on what your bot does, some problems include: - Bot getting silenced (for spamming) - Bot being unable to move lvz objects - Bot being unable to *setfreq or *setship properly - Bot being unable to use certain commands depending on what level you gave them To start off with, I'd strongly advise removing any !say feature implemented in your bots. It basically grants whoever has access to that bot to exploit whatever level of powers it has. I would then suggest creating an entirely separate group for bots, and place all the commands they're allowed to use in that file. To avoid spam limits, add 'unlimitedchat' to that file (e.g. groupdef.dir/bots). For lvz objects, you may need to add 'broadcastbot' or 'broadcastall'. After you've done that, don't forget to add 'higher_than_bots' (replace 'bots' with whatever) into the sysop's file (groupdef.dir/sysop or groupdef.conf). This ensures that the sysop (and whoever else you add) will be able to ?kick the bot out at any time. Never sysop your bot. Then, there is no true quickfix for either *setfreq or *setship. You either have to modify the bot plugins to send "?setfreq -f #" and "?setship -f #", or edit and recompile game.c to remove the -f tag and ignore the frequency manager. I also noticed some issues with *scorereset on my bot, but never really bothered to debug the issue, so I can't tell you if this is something you should worry about or not. Lastly, there might be commands that differ on Subgame and ASSS, such as *kill vs ?kick. You'll have to enable the module funky:sgcompat (in modules.conf) for compatibility with subgame commands, which I strongly recommend. You will also have to add these commands in the appropriate group files (e.g. conf/groupdef.dir/mod), since most of them are not included by default.

I don't think ASSS is limited to 254 flags, that would be the first I've ever heard of such a limitation. Perhaps you're confusing the flag ids, which would range from 0 to 254. (Although even if such a limitation of 254 flags did happen to sneak in the source, you only have to change one number at the top of flagcore.c) Oh, and yeah, just to be redundant with your own self comments: excuses!

The bugs mentioned by SyrusMX™ are present on all three of these directory servers: ssdir.playsubspace.com dirserver.ssnecentral.net ds1.hlrse.net

This seems oddly familiar, almost déjà vu. I'm surprised no one here brought up RapidShare. Here's the thread for historical reference - oh wait, it was this year: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=22995&st=0

This could get interesting If that's the case, count me in!

What does this Sniper v0.40 "explosion" graphic go to?
Hakaku replied to L.C.'s topic in General Discussion
Sniper never had electromagnetic pulse bombs, just three regular bomb levels (red, green, blue). Bomb explosions are ruled out though, since there's already another graphic used for those. This particular one is used for ship explosions, such as suicide (F12). -
Well, if there was any way of acquiring SubSpace from BDE as a community, I think we should definitely opt for that before anything. If not, we should try to work with BDE, and if possible put pressure on Priit. Otherwise, unless I'm missing something, I'm not really sure what benefit contact with BDE can bring us. I'm worried all this noise could potentially have the adverse effect of what we're seeking. They don't actually have the source to any of SubSpace, they just own the rights. They could potentially contribute to this game, but what use is it if they don't make some profit off of it?
-
You're completely missing my point, I already know the difference. But good luck selling the SubSpace client.

Btw, problem with the formula... SubSpace = BDE Continuum != BDE

Ozaq2 has never had a website, and it's not really separate from Brilliant Digital Entertainment per se. As far as I know, the sole purpose of Ozaq2 was to acquire and manage intellectual property for the purpose of making profit relicensing them. I'm not actually sure that it still exists anymore, but your best bet would definitely be to get in contact with Brilliant (Digital) Entertainment.

So a couple years later, has anything changed?
Hakaku replied to Gravitron's topic in General Discussion
So in the end, my intuition from the start was pretty accurate. You guys basically fed the fire by embracing someone who has been disconnected from the community for like six years. Meanwhile, the entire community has been riding the open source wave and progressing in ways that don't exactly match up with the closed sourcing that has scarred it since Priit stopped updating the game. It seemed pretty clear to me that Snrrrub's eventual dissappearance was bound to happen, whether or not your disputes occured. Although I will add this, I do believe that the way Ghost acted was ridiculous, if not utterly childish. Rather than putting the effort into working with and pressuring Snrrrub for a more open relation, he decided to pull an Altec altogether. I may not agree with Snrrrub, and I've always disagreed with him concealing the source to everything he provided, but it seems pretty clear to me that Ghost decided to put his ego before everything else. It's the entire SSCouncil thing all over, he knew it meant that he would hold less influence, less power, so he opted against it. - Accusing Snrrrub of power mongering is just an excuse to conceal your own private agenda. If you were really that blind as to not catch on that Snrrrub prefered to play it safe and continue with closed sourceness, then you should all get a reality check, it was made pretty clear from the start. At this point, I would rather let someone who's motivated enough bring about change in this game. Even if they're another Priit, at least it's better to have an active Priit than no Priit at all. -
EA? EA owns nothing in regards to anything SubSpace, so they would have no say in sueing. I went over who owns the right to SubSpace in-depth before, see this topic: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=20115&view=findpost&p=217884

Btw Doc, you knew about it slightly earlier than June, take a look at Polix's post in this thread: http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=22766

I don't blame him for working, I blame 1) the community for being way too hasty to hand him a bunch of power, and 2) him for throwing a bunch of stuff at the community and failing to maintain them. It's the same old Priit argument, can you blame him for not caring about Continuum? No, but we do blame him for failing to maintain the game and letting it die. -
To add to what NBVegita said, What the media isn't informing people is about the numerous side effects that flu shots have, and doctors, including the World Health Organization, will go so far as to even deny the possibility for a flu shot to have secondary effects to cover up their arses, while governments are providing pharmaceutical companies blanket immunity from lawsuits. Does that not bother you at all? The H1N1 shot still includes mercury and squalene, which an increasing amount of research is showing that there is a direct one to one correlation between the presence of mercury and squalene with irreversible, often neurological damages that people suffer as a result of getting their shot. In light of Ducky's argument, "Most of you that have posted have no better reason to claim than 'It won't happen to me'", you can easily reverse this and say that "Most of you who advocate for the flu shot have never suffered from the side effects caused by one, and can give no better reason against this except to claim that 'It won't happen to me.'" You can claim such cases to be "rare", but they're perhaps just as rare as someone dying from the flu itself - the only difference being, the number of people affected by a flu shot will never be documented. Those who have been affected by shots, definitely advocate against getting them, and would rather suffer a few weeks having a flu than living a life of hospitalization and rehabilitation. With people dying from H1N1, there have been very little known cases where the people died without having some other sort of medical complication. These people ought to be priority in getting the flu shot, but perfectly healthy people should inform themselves, consult their doctors and avoid the shot unless absolutely necessary.

Don't worry about Grav, he's just generally bitter about everything. Personally, I think it's great that more games admit to being influenced by SubSpace, while providing different and new aspects to the gameplay that give them their unique flare. They'll never be SubSpace; that would just be lame. Anyhow, the game looks pretty interesting, but it would be nice to have some default background music to it of some sort, since the weapon sound effects alone get a little irritating after a while.

So a couple years later, has anything changed?
Hakaku replied to Gravitron's topic in General Discussion
Like Syrus said, the SSCouncil remains a bunch of afkers that has done little to nothing in the past two years. Well, not like they've done anything in the past either, but their apparent pseudo influence is pretty much nil nowadays. I would have to say Polix is probably the only powerhouse of change in Subspace left. In terms of zones, those that continue to develop continue to survive, while others slowly fade away. Bluegoku who stated Hockey Zone was the highest populated ASSS zone has been surpassed by Hyperspace, which is one of the only zones actually gaining population, as opposed to others like Trench Wars that are heavily declining. One thing that did change since that time was that Snrrrub mysteriously reappeared out of no where, and everyone immediately began to glorify him. Although he did contribute a number of things (hosting, chat client, ASSS patches, protocol info) and helped boost the morale for change around here, I think people went too far in relying on him, since just as he appeared out of no where, it didn't take very long at all before he disappeared and stopped helping or talking anyone, let alone provide updates to what he contributed and broke.
