    Mod abuse

I understand both points of view concerning these issues, so I've made a few fixes that should partly address them: - The flag outside of map boundaries should have never occured, that was a bug in the map. - A player who comes in the zone solely to win the Jackpot (if no one is around) will not be awarded the full amount of credits if the jackpot is over a certain amount. [Eventually this will be expanded to also add any player who did not contribute to the jackpot at all (i.e. 0 kills 0 wins since last game), will not be permitted to win at all.] So to make it clear, yes this was a mishandling of the situation. Anna had wanted to maintain the Jackpot so that those who played the previous night could continue where they left off, and so wanted to prevent those who came in the zone just to win without adding anything to the jackpot (aka the "Spyed effect"). It is evident that this was the intent based on your screenshot, though I am also aware that the Staff Rules had been broken in order to place the flag outside of map boundaries. No bans will be accorded: this is terrible practice in order to try to solve an issue, it's merely hiding the problem rather than addressing it. So there is no need to result to incessant name calling, one flag should not stop you from playing the game.
  2. Lol obsessed much?
  3. The one about the lawyer was pretty bad lol.
  4. Heh, the only reason I liked it as a separate forum was so that it was easier to ignore those topics.
  5. I would say that this is more addressed to server development rather than Discretion as a client (Edit: Oh nvm, we're not in Discretion forum). I'm not sure if you're aware, but ASSS servers allow both UDP and TCP client connections, the latter one being specifically geared towards chat clients. It could easily be possible to either setup an intermediary Proxy server that retains chat information and forwards that information to a chat client upon request, or modify the ASSS module directly to store X amount of lines. All it would require to change in the existing TCP protocol would be to have the chat client forward an optional request upon connecting for either all previous lines, or those starting from the last line that matches a specific string (though the filtering could also be done client-side). For Subgame servers, the only plausible way to do this would be to have a bot logged into the zone storing chat information. An ugly solution, but it works. For ASSS zones that refuse TCP connections, a module could more or less easily be created to do the same thing as the TCP chatnet protocol + storing lines.
  6. Who's JDS? Just kidding Happy Bday!
  7. Oh snaps, I totally missed that post, my bad. I withdraw my earlier comment >.<
  8. Post something relevant to the topic at hand, or don't post at all. You've now been warned.
  9. Doing that would still require knowledge of C since you'd first have to write something akin to Pymod.c in ASSS, which allows users to use Python modules (it's a chaotic mess though). I think D1st0rt attempted doing something like this for C#, but didn't go far with it because he said he didn't know enough C. - As far as I know, you can't just load a random .dll file without knowing how to call and interpret it. It's not impossible though, but it may not be that easy. (On a side note, with some dedication you should be able to implement VB.NET into Mervbot 48b, which was ported by SOS for .NET languages) As for links, General: * Server Help Forum (help, examples, and more.) * ASSS Wiki * ASSS Download & Repository Module: * Description * How to install your own module (for Python and C, and using different compilers for different platforms) * How to write your own module (for Python or C) * List of Custom Modules (premade & released modules by members of the community)
  10. That is correct. ASSS modules can only be written in either C or Python.
  11. Bots haven't been made to death, it's just that they're currently going the way of the dinosaurs. Bots were originally designed to provide additional functionality that neither the user nor the Subgame server possessed. However, Subgame has gradually been on the decline over the years in favour of the more flexible and open sourced ASSS server, which was meant to supercede Subgame, and more importantly bots, by providing additional features that bots can't do by manipulating the UDP protocol. Basically, ASSS modules can be dynamically loaded and unloaded within the server itself, so there's no need for a bot. It also means you don't need to find a separate host for your bot (people who host bots nowadays are quasi nil). Probably the biggest downfall with ASSS modules is that if they crash, your entire server will crash as well. It can be argued that a well-coded module shouldn't crash the server in the first place, which is true, but as we can't envisage every little detail, some people still prefer using bots in addition to the server. In the end, if you're coding your own bot, just know that you may or may not be the only person using it, and the only person who will be able to provide support for it. It's difficult to get help for just about any bot core now, while if you code an ASSS module, there are many people who will be willing to help you learn.
  12. The language you choose to make your bot in is of no importance. To me, the most difficult part about designing an entirely new bot is using the proper protocol and establishing a connection. If you want it to connect to Subgame zones, or want your bot to keep track of lots of player information, take a look at using the UDP Game Protocol. If you're good with connecting to ASSS zones only and don't require tracking that much information specifically on players, the TCP ChatNet protocol would be simpler to use. In either case, the choice is yours. As CRe pointed out, there's an older VB bot that exists, you might want to take a look at that. Though, you could also try learning how to write a simple MervBot plugin (either C++ or C#), since it's the most widely supported bot core out there and has lots of pre-existing plugins and examples that help. And if you're using ASSS, you can already directly write modules (in either C or Python) that are run on the server itself.
  13. If you've tried using HP's integrated Windows repair feature, then how is it not working? If you can get as far as Microsoft's bars or even the boot menu, then you should definitely be able to enter the Windows repair thing since it's separated from the OS itself.
  14. If you have an HP laptop, chances are that it didn't come with a Windows CD. They do however have an option to boot straight into the Windows repair thing at the startup. I forgot what key you have to press, but it's there.
  15. Heh, speaking of scripts, this just reminded me of Happyman & Mara_Jade's Devastation Storyline. http://www.devazone.net/zone.php (scroll to bottom)
  16. bump why is it restricted?
  17. I think it has to do with that in certain forums and subforums your post isn't counted towards your post count ranking. This was probably done in the old trash talk forum so that spam threads and posts didn't one up spammers' post rankings, so it's possible that Black Daemon, who hasn't really posted outside of Desert Storm's new forum, got caught in this. Just taking a guess here, I don't know if IPB has this feature or not.
  18. Mine too said 0 at the time rootbear posted this (now 26). It probably doesn't update realtime though.
  19. The screenshot page looks really good now (edit: minus this broken image). kudos on the great job. Not exactly concerning the site itself, but rather in the navbar, can you remove Star Wars Empire?
  20. I was referring to the specific spelling error in the video title, which appears in large when you click on the video to start playing it. Also, another suggestion, make the banner clickable, so that it returns you to the home page.
  21. I still wanna point this out: Origianl VIE Intro. That, plus 'DC Map Editor' looks quite odd, to me it's better used as a redundant acronym 'DCME Map Editor,' like saying 'ASSS server,' 'ATM machine,' or 'PIN number'. And then in the FAQ, C:\\ should be changed to C:\ (first question). Another thing I noticed is that the SubSpace Online banner would probably look better if it used transparency, since I can see the cutoff edge between that and the background; and the corners of the white content section could use a bit of anti-aliasing.
  22. If you add a new bong # directly into your Continuum folder, only you will be able to hear it. For that matter, most zones don't allow sending sound messages from player to player, usually only from staff/server to player. If you're running a zone or arena, you can compress the bong file into a .lvz file, and add it into your arena's lvz files setting. This will force anyone who enters your arena to download the file, so that if you use it, everyone will hear it.
