  1. When all else fails: norton antivirus 2006 (even a 15 day trial) + search & destroy. It has yet to fail me and I manage 50+ machines at work with dumb!@#$%^&* users.
  2. computers dont change based on the weather... you had to have done something that caused a change. What programs have you installed recently or driver updates, directx anything you can think of. Something had to have changed, what was it?
  3. what did you update recently?
  4. I've owned a computer for over 12 years now, and I have never used a real-time anti-virus/anti-spyware tool. My personal opinion is that they are unnecessary for people who know how to use their computers properly. The basic guidelines entail the following: Don't go to porn sites. Don't run anything from an untrusted source. You get what you pay for, meaning that if it is free, there is probably a price you will pay in another way. Your computer is a tool, treat it properly and don't load it up with useless or unnecessary crap and it will last you for a long time. Real-time popup blockers/anti-spyware and the rest are not needed if you are just smart with what you do. Un-install your 'protection' and follow the above guidelines and you shouldn't have any probs.

  6. This is usually a permissions problem. It could be a problem with the amount access your windows user account has (if you are not an administrator). If that is not the case, you can try to right click the Continuum folder, and check the properties. Click on "Read Only" until you see that there is NO check in that box. If still not functioning, then you can try to re-install Continuum into a different directory... when installing name the directory "Continuum2" or something.
  7. Try disabling each, one at a time, and seeing when Continuum runs without problems. That should confirm/deny your suspicions.
  8. Those sites are down from here, too.
  9. Make sure your playername doesn't start with an odd character... it should start with a letter or number (with a few exceptions).
  10. Just a couple corrections: The concept of the game is old, this build (Continuum) has only been around since 2001, and it was written from scratch, with no code ripped/shared/etc. from the original SubSpace client. Continuum39pr1 fixed the prox bug: http://www.subspacedownloads.com/history/continuum.txt In every scenario, this problem has been attributed to the local computer, not the game. Although users may claim that the game is at fault, things like customized/broken/hacked operating systems, ant-spyware/antivirus, or other local software has been the cause. Properly installed and updated drivers and operating systems will always run the game, which is why a re-install is considered the 'last resort'. But it will fix your problem, barring the above mentioned items (this includes hacked/unserialized versions of XP).
  11. Yep, it says that at the very top of the page.
  12. New video drivers and/or DirectX.

  14. gotcha
  15. You can always sort the process list by name... that way it won't jump around when trying to kill it.
  16. Just another iteratation to show that update windows sucks. Fresh installs are always more stable than updates on top of an existing OS.
  17. Doh, I should play more, nowadays 8(
  18. McAfee is probably the culprit. Disable it as a test to see if it fixes it. For the Router, I suggest holding the reset button for 10 secs to reset it to default settings, then start over with your setup from scratch.
  19. That should be for enemies only, your ping will always show.
  20. Re-install windows (always a last resort, but haven't had anyone come back to say it didn't work).
  21. In-game, hit ESC, so the menu is open. Hit F3 to cycle through the 3 options: Show all nametags Show Other Nametags (not yours) Show No Nametags (if you read the menu when opened with ESC, it tells you to use F3)
  22. Refer to this post... same problem (and it is current): http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=10650
