  1. Eh, feel free to run it any way you want. I no longer run this board and I'm not claiming any rights to the setting/universe I've created (except for the book I'm slowly writing). Speaking of which, would anyone object if I were to appropriate some of your character concepts for my novel? I'll try not to mangle them too much, and on the slim chance I get published you might even be able to read about your expoits during the Gehenna Incident.
  2. I did the test, but I don't feel like posting my answer so I'll just go with Worthless' pants on this one.
  3. Are these the elections of the government of Tau Ceti? According to the description I wrote for the previous bars, Tau Ceti is an independant system and not a member of any of the major nations. The description in the stickied thread is an older version of what I had intended for the rpg I was going to run, and some things have changed. If you were inferring that Tau Ceti is an Alliance protectorate (the impression that I got) it's all good, but the concept of elections don't really fit with the fluff on the Alliance I'd previously posted. Just looking for confirmation on how you want this to fit together. [btw]The Alliance systems I had set on previously are: Balar, 61 Cygni, Oricanetes E, Houlicat, Tau Hydra and Kanatis itself[/btw] I think being a deity would come under "superpowers" wouldn't it?
  4. I'll join in if you get the numbers you want, lemme know if you want any of the other files (histories, mostly) My char: Richard Arbury, (aka Manus, aka MCD, aka Manus Celer Dei) Former Citizen-soldier of the Kanatis Alliance and an accomplished mercenary well known in military circles as being efficient and capable in the extreme, Richard has "retired" from active combat missions and has setup a small chain of businesses in the backwater that is the 17th parallel station. Many patrons of his bar (which he runs himself along with his wife Jenneke) are combat veterans of the various wars and skirmishes along the frontier and he generally gets along well with this type of person, so long as they remember who he is and don't get too rowdy. Being a patriot and sharing in the Alliance strategic vision of cultural ascendancy, he is most distressed by the recent spate of pirate attacks on Alliance shipping, and has promised a bounty for comfimed pirate kills and is also pe!@#$%^&*ioning for an Alliance consensus on arming all civilian vessels, but the move for consensus is being slowed by groups afraid that the act will be seen as a hostile move by their more powerful neighbours. Manus' bar is well known as not only a place for the most excellent beer outside Earth (their own special brew is made following a secret process only Jenneke and her family are privy to), it is also a place for the hiring of spacers to perform tasks no-questions-asked, stipulated to be largely !@#$%^&*ociated with Manus' former employers, the Independant Mercenaries Guild, a sub-section of the Alliance Military. Manus also owns the ship outfitters adjacent to the bar, and his technicians are often at work swapping in/out weapons and subsystems on ships docked at the latchpoint or in the landing bay. What you don't (necessarily) know: The bar is also used as neutral ground for secure meetings between the intelligence agencies of the major nations, who tolerate the seedier side of the bars activities for the utility of this function.
  5. I still read the forums on occasion and I'm helping with some projects, but I haven't logged in since July. I'm not trying to cold turkey quit like most others. I've got 7 years of addiction to lose so I'm doing it in stages.
  6. While I am a supporter of the principle of gay marriage, as a New Zealander I have no motivation to involve myself one way or another in the legal aspects of the US cons!@#$%^&*ution. How about an amendment to the Treaty of Waitangi banning gay marriage? Fwiw, I think specifics of homosexuality and marriage do not belong in any cons!@#$%^&*ution. I think the cons!@#$%^&*ution should be more generalised. It is probably a state/provincial issue in the US and other countries (like Australia) anyway. I don't think federal governments should over-involve themselves in state affairs. Heh, I get your point (even though the comparison is kind of silly). I do agree with the idea that sometimes one must involve themselves in the affairs of another sovereign country when the situation merits it (eg if a country legalised murder of the unemployed), but in this case I do not feel any such compulsion. Over here we recently passed a civil unions bill that effectively gives any couple the same rights as a married heterosexual couple if they choose to form a civil union. I approve of thelaw, but at the same time I do not feel the need to preach its merits to anyone else. [edit]eye r teh badd speelr[/edit]

  8. I have to stop reading this thread, I think spin is trying to make me stupid. [late edit] Godwins law. [/late edit]
  9. I'm going to assume this is directed at me. 1. I am not "attempting to stay leader", I have already offered to step down but noone has as yet taken me up on my offer. I have already outlined why I chose to do so and have no real incentive to repeat myself here. 2. As to why I "haven't done anything", the answer is very simple; The purpose of the OPD is/was to provide an area where pub players can come to an agreement as to what we would like to see form the future of public play in the zone. This requires discussion on the subject. There has been almost none of this. This is the OPD, not the "Manus puts up his own personal settings and map because noone else chose to submit any ideas" forum. If noone wants to discuss any of the aspects of the zone, then I see no point in changing them. 3. As of today, I have decided to give my involvement in Subspace a rest. I would not go so far as to say I'm quitting the game (I did that once before in '00), but don't expect me to come back to the zone except for short visits for another couple of years. I would add more, but I find it to be emotionally trying attemping to justify it.
  10. I have to agree with trained on this one.
  11. The first of the resource files for the rpg are now up. I'm going to stagger the posting of them in order to cut down on the number of bleeding eyes that accompany this much text, and to gather any opinions regarding the direction I've taken with the storyline and tech. First off is Starships. I had originally intended to post a number of set ship ch!@#$%^&*is, but I've opted instead to let players decide for themselves what they want their ship(s) to be like. If you want, I'll be happy to construct a ship for your character, and I'll be giving out tips to balancing your vessel if you want to make your own. The file doesn't include special devices such as stealth fields or detector arrays, as they are covered in a seperate secion, which I'll post later in the week. To make it easy for comparison, post your ship using this format: Hull Displacement: n tons Reactor: type Max Accel: n gravities Antigrav Strength: n gravities Foldspace Range: n lightyears Weapons: nX weapon 1, nX weapon 2, etc Armour: type Starships.rtf
  12. If the opd come up with a set of comprehensive changes to public settings, will/should this be reflected in the league structure of the zone? I have personally maintained that 17th parallel should only need a single javelin league and a single multi-ship league. With that in mind, if the settings for the pub jav (and other ships of course) change, will these changes be reflected by the leagues we have in place? (how many jav leagues do we have anyway? 4?) Discuss.
  13. It appears I'm not going to have broadband access until the end of the year, and as a consequence I'm not going to spend much (if any) time in the zone. Because of this, it's highly unlikely that I'll be working on tweaking the settings in-game. I'm still willing to help out on the forums with whatever we come up with, but it's probably not the best move to keep me as leader when I can't evaluate for myself any physical changes we decide to make.
  14. Does the map affect the balance of the shipsettings? How does it do so? If the map changed, what needs to be altered in the settings? Discuss
  15. I propose then that gun control be replaced by people control.
  16. While this may certainly have been the case in your experience, it does not necessarily hold true that the opinions that were presented to you are indicative of a general worldview of the US. shortly after the terrorist bombings in Bali and just before the invasion of Iraq I took a vacation there and at no time did I ever hear mentioned any opinion that even hinted at a jealousy of the US or their lifestyle, rather, the opinions of the people were supportive of the United States' at!@#$%^&*ude towards terrorism. (Bali is incidentally a part of Indonesia, the largest muslim country in the world.) Of course not, noone would be willing to attack a country that actually HAS weapons of m!@#$%^&* destruction. (it can also be argued that the US couldn't afford to do so while it has so much of its military resources invested in Iraq)
  17. An expansion on the "your turrets get access to your specials" idea: perhaps have the ability to set the radius of a certain special for each ship that allows your teammates within that radius to get that special for 0 nrg while the player is using it. eg, You're flying a ship with xradar, which has been set to n radius, all teammates within that radius automatically gain xradar as long as they remain within that radius and you keep xradar active.
  18. What burns me is how many people assume that the definitions of left and right wing as applied to US politics (or, for that matter, the politics of any country) are universal in all countries. If I yelled my political beliefs from the rooftops (ie, in this forum), I would almost certainly be seen as left wing, yet in my own country I'll be voting for what is considered to be the most right wing party of them all in our upcoming elections. I also get irritated with people that assume there is a universal morality while at the same time holding that morality is a learned feature of our society. Yes, a person is en!@#$%^&*led to hold that belief, but it strikes me as a complete disservice to their ability to reason.

  20. I heartily endorse this product or service. Specialties: Settings Balance, creative solutions to imbalanced shipsettings. Previous work: Ask Vile and/or Zeke
  21. Sorry about not getting back to you guys sooner. As for my not being online, as X'terr said in the previous post, I've been moving. My new job required me to move to Christchurch (New Zealand) and I've been staying at a cousins flat until i can hook up with a nice house to live in. This flat does not have an internet connection so I'm basically trapped i can find a place. This may take a little while so feel free to un-leader-ise me and do your own thing, if not, I have a lot of stuff i'm working on in my head concerning the zone and opd some of my other 17th projects. There'll be a massive posting spree when I've settled in.
  22. Noone can defeat paines L33tness, except the Arbiter of l33t . Paine has now the mission whereby he must post another quote to determine wether or not any of the rest of you is worth the time.
  23. I'm not opposed to changing the jav, but if it is to be done then the changes must be minor, or else the zone will split even more between the "events" players and the public population. 17th already has a high disparity between the two comparative to most other zones (the only notable exception i can think of is TW, and they can afford it).
  24. Snipers anyone?
  25. Half life 1, but close enough
