Just limit the range of burst, and the problem with rushers who burst is pretty much nullified. Burst is retarded in any base zone or base system. Has nothing to do with skill or aim. The same way anchoring and flying backwards is retarded, and being protected by the 5 repels of your 5 or more attaching team mates. Not to mention in most zones the anchor gets 1-3 repels themselves. Either way this thread is two retards arguing to each other about who is more of a retard. Not to mention a zone like EG, only has 2 ships that are useful in basing, and those happen to be the ships with the most wall bounce on bombs. (Thus qualifying EG as a shitty base zone). If you choose any other ship, its because you want to start with a handicap and show you have some semblance of skill. <-- slightly off topic In a good zone, burst would be equal for all ships. Thus making it something a player uses just before they die. SHIT im about to die, let me let off a burst as my last act. Thus you explode, your limited range burst remains, and hopefully some idiot repels it in the process, giving it more range, and deflecting it off a wall and back onto his ship. That's how burst was meant to be played anyway. Not pieces of shit endlessly burst rushing like robotic mindless morons, because that certain ship has a larger range burst, and can deploy 50 of them before dying. Of course this is my opinion, note i never mentioned HS, but a general reflection on bursting and basing. So take no offense.

Hm, nice input on everything. i just wanted to report a 'bug' or just something odd, when you kill a person in the NKZ - safe - spawn area or whatever it's called. The person will explode, respawn, and then the direction of their ship will be adjusted from the original direction they were facing when spawned. And basically all ships directions will be adjusted to that one direction (making it look odd) maybe randomize it? Noticeable if you are looking at other ships. (Not really your own - haven't tried looking at my own ship after i die).

So if you have time, this client is closed source right? Not open? And would it be easy to hack or edit the client? Or figure out the protocols how it works? Like through hex, check-sums, packet interception etc. Will there be encryption in place? Is open source a bad idea? Or is it preferable you have access to the code only? Can you guarantee you would be around and fairly active, even if you are married, have kids, go to school, start a company more successful that goes beyond the priorities of this simple game? Active enough to patch or update after release for the next 20 years?

Well, i usually acknowledge it's my opinion. And not absolute truth. For one things like art, deal with different perspectives of people. So it's all subjective and relative. As well, truth isn't something easy to come by, at the most we just know what isn't true. We can eliminate falsehoods. It is my opinion of a what 'real' mapper is, or a 'true' artist. Personally when i map i always map my own ideas. There is nothing wrong with mapping only your own ideas. You don't need to take orders either. So lets say i had an idea to make a Battle Star Galactica map. That's great, nothing wrong with mapping it. Especially because when it's your idea/project, you will have motivation to actually work on it. But really since it is my idea, and i want my idea to be the best, i realize that not only can i benefit, but my idea can benefit from listening to others opinions on what i mapped as i go along. (Simply because i acknowledge there are things i might miss, or things i might not know) It doesn't mean other people will always be right, but it definitely helps you develop your idea further, especially when discussing it with an objective fresh mind of a person who brings a new perspective. But just to map your own thing entirely. It gives a representation of yourself. You as an artist. So you like to do this, you think this way, you like those colors etc, you like those shapes more than others. But it doesn't give a very good representation of what your idea could have been. And if you never asked others opinions, you won't really even notice that your map failed to reach its potential, you having created it will think its amazing. Like trying an icecream for the first time and thinking it's the best. Not knowing that 100 other flavors exist that are way better than the one you just tried. For whatever reason. (Maybe post apocalypse, only the recipe for vanilla flavor icecream survives) Details of my example aren't that relevant, just the point that it's trying to get across. (btw vanilla is probably one of the best flavors anyway)

Your poll is faulty, if i own no consoles, then im forced to say i own at least 1-5 games for the consol. Because the forums require you to select an answer for each question/poll. For the question, how many video games for the consol do you own in total, add the option to select 0. Also it would be cool if you added specific consoles, and perhaps how many games are burned as opposed to bought. But it's your poll, just a suggestion.

Great idea You are really going all out. In a way you are not just designing one client. But many other things in the process. A Particle Edtior, Map Editor etc. Even the Client itself can be thought of as many programs collectively working together for the whole. In a way it's like you made 5 different programs? Combined them, and have the Phoenix client. It's really a big undertaking. I'm pretty impressed with the extent you are taking this. Even though you are not here to impress anyone. Just can't help it =p Particle editor is pretty cool.

Still unix suggested the balancing system is faulty, i came in that same thread, and posted easy ways to make it better. (If someone can find the thread, it's not that important to me) And Spidernl eventually agreed with everything i said, stated he should have done this, but is the only coder, and doesn't really have time, but will get around to it eventually. (if i remember correctly) Basically spidernl already admitted the team evening is lame. Unless he fixed it since then, i don't even see the issue here. Except that he didn't fix it yet. Now that's only for that specific suggestion, im sure there are other suggestions that went under the carpet. As for mapping, being a mapper myself for various zones, i always bring in the whole population of a zone to view my maps as i progress through creating them. A real mapper would take every suggestion into account, implement various ideas cohesively, to come out with a combination of kick ass ideas from various people. Only considering your own ideas on a map, will never guarantee that the map reaches it's full potential. You being a bias person with maybe one or two perspectives will NEVER, carry the 100 different perspectives, or ideas that come from 100 different people any other way. As the saying goes, "If i can see farther than others, it's only because i stand on the shoulders of giants who came before me." No idea, or knowledge is truly your own, it's built upon detail by detail from previous ideas or previous knowledge. A true artist is only concerned with the best, and constantly improves their maps, and implements the BEST of other peoples ideas. Unless you want to represent the worst of what a map can be. Then you can be self righteous and think you know everything.

Server might have been temporarily down. (since it crashed twice) Try again? Enable Public Networking and Private when windows asks. Enable firewall to allow Phoenix obviously =p. And uh, the IP is 72.161.222.80 So server is currently up, if it still doesn't connect, then i guess its some other issue.
-
Yep that's what crashed server. Server is down again. When you fly too far from NKZ, eventually all directional controls don't work, and you keep moving in 1 direction only (away from nkz still) Then i think once this happens, and you fire bullets - Server crashes.
-
Hey Richard This is my screenshot of the recent crash. My question is, How come when i travel too far from the NKZ, my ship is being pulled in 1 direction and i can't fly back anymore? Only way back is to press insert (warp). I was actually in the middle of the very situation i described when server crashed. http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6213/exceptionsaccesss.png Also here is a screenshot of the Not Responding on server try 9 or 10. Though it eventually goes away and asks me to input the IP again. http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/2298/notresponding.png

Nice you fixed it, what was the problem? Another problem is when i move.. the other ships, appear to vibrate as im moving.. ie they are not staying still.. they only stay still when i am staying still. But it gives the appearance more of the ships vibrating, than of me moving.. This is more visible if you focus on the name tag of the player ship. (the words vibrate) And only if the other ship is stand still (not moving)
-
Thanks, but i have to do some school work anyway, can't wait to test more features when they arrive.
-
Yep keep in mind i only have this problem when using tile background option. Otherwise everything is good. How about the top right exit button? And the fullscreen not being full screen? Are those also problems or were they intended? EDIT So the install went good, Catalyst Control Center opens now, the driver is 100% functional, going to check again if i have same problem. if problem persists, i'll switch to directx9 or OpenGL. Then lastly i'll change the BG. EDIT 2 Same problem. Trying OpenGL and Directx9 now. EDIT3 Same problem on DX9, trying openGL now.. EDIT4 Same problem on OpenGL, no changes, going to change BG now. EDIT5 Changing the BG fixed the problem somewhat, but i still have the issue with the wall colors bleeding into the map... circled it. As you can see the wall bleeds in the direction i am flying. http://imageshack.us/a/img812/2193/sameproblem.png BTW i really think the old BG looks wicked with this distortion, if only the ship/walls/guns didn't get distorted. It appears as if the stars are actually sparkling.. etc or like you are flying inside a real nebula. EDIT 6 Bullets still getting distorted, it's just all happening behind the new BG.. http://imageshack.us/a/img13/1738/bulletdistortions.png
-
On the previous version i still get the problem. Reinstalling my graphic driver didn't work. What would i change the bg5.jpg to? It's not just the stars that get distorted, its everything. And its direction based. if i fly forward all things on screen, seem to leak color in that direction. If i fly backwards same thing. Still might be a graphic problem on my end, because cataylst control center won't open. So i will fix it first, and let you know once its fixed if phoenix still has the same problem. edit: working on it, as stated previously a88 had the same problem. going to replace BG soon and see if it works, also in process of reinstalling graphics driver again.

Is it up? I get no connection, and client temporarily says (not responding) before it asks me to input ip again. This is what i get when i use tile background image. Running in windowed mode 1024x768 (however i had no problem last time i did this), except tile background image was not selected. I have a direct x11 card, pretty much top of the line computer. 8 gigs of ram, 6 core processor. http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/5289/cool4.png http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/731/cool5.png http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/7374/cool6.png Honestly it makes the actual 'space' (stars etc), LOOK damn wicked.. way better than when it's working.. if you can keep the distortion on the space, and remove the distortion from the asteroids, walls, ship, and bullets, it would be pretty cool.. Does this in full screen 1600x900 with tile background selected. However fullscreen is not exactly full screen. It basically becomes windowed mode (without the window edges) and shows part of my desktop. I'll just take another screenshot. I can remove previous screenshots upon request. This is 1440x900 (it was fullscreen when it asked me to select client or server, option 1 or 2, when i selected option 2 server, the full screen changed to this) http://imageshack.us/a/img202/5716/fullscreenh.png The Exit button on the options menu, where you select resolution, and graphics, WORKS. However the exit button top right corner in the shape of a square, doesn't work. (suspect you disabled it?) My graphic card is ATI Radeon™ HD 5870 Graphics Going to reinstall driver, and see if it fixes it.

Spidernl i was flying around the Phoenix client the other day, and it is basically 95% done and almost in Beta. In another year when the client is complete, do you think HS will port over? Because i believe with the new client, there will be a lot less limitations. As well it still has the feel of subspace, and will probably retain the look. Apparently with the map editor for Phoenix you'll be able to do more stuff that would usually require a bot or module in continuum to do. As well i am not a programmer, and not sure if i understood this correctly, but from what i understood all that c++ knowledge won't be needed, as you will do most stuff with scripting. So basically Phoenix client solves a few problems. It makes devving way easier. Anyone can dev. This eliminates the need for people to complain, argue, or blame other coders for not coding. Because instead of that they can just script themselves. Or most of their ideas will now be easily made within the map editor itself. And scripting is easier to learn but most of all just faster to learn. (Hopefully Richard can make it real time scripting) So i can just change a value, run the script, and learn instantly what that value does without having to read a book on scripting. Next because it has so many new features, it eliminates all complaining about the old client, or not getting ideas done, and gets everyone motivated. Last it will have tons of new features were bans pretty much become obsolete unless you cheat. ROFL, what you just wrote. Is the exact definition of Entropy in DSB. There is no way spidernl qualifies for this definition yet, not while Entropy is still around.
-
Well this is just my view. Spidernl is not very objective. He is not really making a game the community wants, so much as a game he wants. And being the only active coder that's his prerogative. But basically there have been many people who posted in a nice, constructive and humble manner, and their ideas were turned down by Spidernl. (i've witnessed this over the past year or two, with the few odd exceptions) How many of Hyperspace features, weapons, armor, options etc, are actually composed of other peoples ideas? other than brains or spidernl. 10%? 50%? Simply answering this question can prove me wrong, or prove me right. Of course spidernl's legitimate argument will be, some people are idiots, and don't have the whole picture of HS like i do. Dumb ideas won't be accepted etc. But fair is fair, if everyone is an idiot, don't get all on your high horse, if they call you an idiot back or think your ideas are dumb also.

Get Ready! New server, playable client available very soon.
Lone Outlaw replied to Vidiot_X's topic in Phoenix
Wicked, thanks for the break down. Is networking not your strong point? Because you have everything else in the 90 percentile, except Networking. Though i guess Networking would be last to be developed anyway? Your dedication to the project is admirable. Can't wait for the beta. =) -

i think you might need some default wall art, and ship graphics? Before a client really takes with the current subspace population. (and not just a simple wall, but something really cool) And a wall/ship and level editor. Not really sure but i think you have all this? But so far i've only seen 2 or 3 ships? Perhaps post a thread displaying all the ship models, colored in etc. Or is the goal to use subspace ships? Perhaps design a nice base to show off the potential and the new wall art also. Now some skilled people might have the incentive to start from scratch and make a zone, but if you really want heavy involvement, you need some defaults set up. (Subspace/continuum, had their own defaults) If you could get some graphically inclined people to make a wall set each, or five wall sets using your tile and map editor, it would be pretty cool. Both thin and thick walls etc. Also a list of similarities and differences between your client and subspace would be nice. Ie detailing the extra security? Chat system? Friend system? The extra gameplay enhancements? Map enhancements? It's all kind of disorganized and hard to grasp with all the threads you made. For example can we have 1 way force fields? Which you can fly through from one direction, but going back it blocks you? This would allow for so many map ideas it's not even funny. Obviously im sure you are eventually heading towards this, but just expressing how eager i am to see it. -
Exciting News! New Subspace-Like Game.
Lone Outlaw replied to ecdryere's topic in General Discussion
It's about time people give subspace/continuum a rest, and progress toward something new. As Ethynol would say 'Horrible Zone' when talking of Chaos zone. i think there is a new reality that people in denial should accept, if they actually want to improve anything. 'Horrible Game.' Some people who are making new continuum clients have already accepted this. Some people like Hoch or Polix, have realized a game isn't worth their livelihood. Especially one lacking updates for 6 years. -
After we got used to each other, you leave some other people in charge. Now it will take them a few good years to get used to me. In the meantime i'm sure ill enjoy a lot more netbans. Take care polix.

Horrible game

i don't play mine craft.. the eye probably is the best design.. all of them are really good. But i think in order to win the contest, minecraft would have wanted something that anyone can recognize. Even a person who doesn't play the game. As well as a design that is universal for the whole game. And a sheep doesn't really speak for the whole game.. and the eye itself while amazing, doesnt scream minecraft/represent it well, unless you really know about the game.. so i dunno about your chances of winning. But i voted.
