You did install the latest drivers for your videocard right? Sounds like a definite hardware problem then. Open up your computer, dust it out and make sure everything is connected properly. If thats not working then there is a problem with the electronics of (proberly) your gfx card. You should put it in another computer then and test it out (if you have that luxury) so you know for certain if there is a problem with the gfx card or something else.

I never heard about spyware or virusses hogging the internet connection... - Do you have a firewall (on) ? - What ISP do you have? I assume this is a problem with your ISP, but it might aswell be a firewall closing the connection when it thinks its attacked.
