Set your monitor driver to plug and play monitor. This way you can force the resolution higher, however your monitor must be able to display it if you want to see anything (most monitors can display it but don't support it). Please note the remark made by Bargeld; this won't do good to the life span of your monitor.

You might want to use scandisk on your HD so its sure this error isn't caused by HD bad sectors. Maybe a bit pointless, but you also might want to check if you have enough diskspace. I have never had problems with Run As... command and downloading stuff. (I think...)
