Of course it goes down - it takes lots of CPU power to do this. I recommend using the Huffyuv video codec - this makes huge files but with very little CPU usage. Afterwards, you can convert them over to another codec with VirtualDub.

Motherboard drivers could be a good bet. Or take it to back for repairs if under warrantly. Say it's way too slow now and have them take a look.

Very freaky. Does it happen in all zones? It couldn't be random packets, since it would most likely just be garbage data in that case.

Some other program is stealing focus. Try shutting down everything else and cleaning the system of spyware.

No, it does not use anything but plain old Win32. Since nobody else has ever reported this, I think it's safe to say something's wonky with your computer. A trial-and-error frenzy is in order. Or you could just give your system info (start->run->msinfo32) and post it here in case I might spot something odd.
