Heh, it took a lot of guess work There's still a few minor mistakes in there that I just noticed.
-
One problem with that, is that it encourages two things: a player to use long-distance weapons (ship 3, 4), and a player to camp. It disfavours offensive style ships like jav and warbird, while encouraging people to run a lot rather than fight head on. Maybe that's just me who sees it this way though. I would rather find a way that encourages team play, since this is afterall, a valuable part of Devastation.

For the 49072307891234912634871326'th time. I'm not making a bot. There's no point when no one can host the bot. Everything will be rendered server-side, and be fully automated. But like I said, don't expect anything soon.

Topic moved. But to explain base dueling a little more, here's two different concepts : EG-style base dueling involves two teams who face off from opposite ends of a somewhat mirrored & closed base. Your team wins a round when you completely kill all your enemies, or force your way to their end. The teams are then switched sides, and you win after X rounds. TW-style base dueling involves an open base, wherein two teams start from opposite ends of the base and win by either holding the flag for so many minutes, or by gaining so many points after a specified amount of time. The second style suits Devastation's gameplay better, but the problem is that it becomes a game of defender vs attacker, which can give one team a significant camping advantage. The first style (which we'll be opting for) is a little more balanced, since you can be both attacking and defending at any time. Basically though, it's an arena full of little bases. Pick a teammate or go solo, select a base, and challenge an opponent. Win, rank up. Lose, rank down. (well, actual rank scoring will depend on multiple factors though)

I kind of went a bit fast with the top-left rounded green part, but otherwise it's pretty much the same as in the screenshot.basebattle.lvl

Prefixes don't necessarily reflect who the host is, nor the server the zone is being hosted on. SSCU is not an actual server in itself, nor a host, it's just a prefix that was kept for historical reasons. Likewise, SSCI is kept for historical reasons, despite it even lacking SSC biller connection.

I think with the Shark, you could just +1 a burst, and it would be good. This way, it has at least something over the Javelin. I also love how many people hate the lancaster as a ship, but it always made me laugh when one person manages to use it quite effectively and everyone suddenly calls it overpowered. If we were to make it more balanced, then decreasing bombs/mines and increasing bullet rate could make it better in overall combat, rather than just basing. And I still think the terrier wastes way too much energy. (these are just my opinion though)
-
It's all good. I asked JDS himself if he still had the base battle/base duel map somewhere, because I always liked the concept. He said he'd try to look for it, but for now all we have is a screenshot here if someone attempts to remake it tile by tile. The map is a bit bigger than an EG-style baseduel, and was designed to be an event in itself (with greens in center).

Yep, it would seem ship 5, 7, and 8 are Devastation's least used ships. The weasel (6) on the other hand is used quite frequently. Here's my opinion on them : Terrier (5) : Probably the only player who ever used this ship was XDOOM, and maybe laserman a few times just for the kicks of it. Its energy usage is an abomination, which makes it a far too easy target. Shark (8 ) : The second least used ship. It's best used as a basing ship, and like the jav, it's suicidal. The way I always portrayed it was a bursting ship, but it has no more bursts than a jav does, so it's not really that useful. Lancaster (7) : The third least used ship. It's best used as a basing ship to confine the trajectory of its bombs. In comparison to the levi, the bombs bounce allowing it to reach further into nme territory, but the levi overpowers it in that one-time shot + shrap is more effective. ---------- So here's the question, do you want to keep the traditional settings and tweak them a little? Or do you want to scrap them in their entirety?

MegaJackpot has now been restored! Mods can start and stop it using either !start/!stop, or ?start/?stop. Take your pick. (as a general rule of thumb, it should be hosted on weekends as it used to) Credits and Buyables are all functional, let me know if you have trouble with any of them. Events on the other hand will be a bit longer, I'm basically gonna rewrite the entire module by hand. Expect Jugger to be the first to return, then elim events after.

It's still got a fair ways to go, especially considering that Bak is pretty much alone when it comes to developping things. I finally took the time to try the Discretion Module Tutorial, and it worked more or less without a hitch. Anyone writing modules for ASSS can also benefit from using Eclipse as an all around IDE (rather than the antiquating Dev-C++), since there's readily available compilation instructions for each of them available on the wiki.

Lol what do you mean I don't follow through I wasn't even a staff or even dev member at the time!
-
Just use your best judgement. When it comes to bases, all you gotta worry about is not making the corridors too small, because this makes it difficult to maneuver around. You can find some bases posted up here. But your base turned out quite nicely. As for setting up a private dev server, there's no need. If you want to test out maps and bases, I can easily set you up with a private arena. Uploading and changing stuff is really quite simple, and not much different from subgame at all.

Jabjab, Sama just told you that you can't use HTML. Just use the media tags, it's the exact same thing. -
As far as I know, the ports you need to forward depend on the ports of the zone you're trying to access. So if it's 5000, you'd need to forward 5000 and 5001. I'm not aware of any way to get around it though.

huh? If you don't want to display the video, just link it >.> Edit: Sama's too ninja for me. -
lol it was laserman's, but he literally just ripped off EG's map for the kicks of it. Mappers pretty much come and go, so there isn't really any one person. The current map was designed by NR (aka No_Remorse), before that I was the one designing maps & lvz, and before that there were a few made by Mage+. Beyond that it was pretty much all XDOOM, one by JDS, another by No_Remorse, and possibly one or a few by SOS in the very beginning of Deva's revival (2005-2006). Exceptions include holiday maps, where everyone used to pitch in. (and yeah, typo)

If you'd put it up and can get a few players I'd be up for a game.

Heh, you're like the second person to bring up the ice-style, which pretty much predates when Deva went SSC. I'm not sure anyone has a map or tileset from that far back. Though atm, the current map doesn't use any old bases. I'll give the new tileset idea some thought. As for Python, XDOOM doesn't code that stuff He codes C# (for the bot), while I do C. We have a few races (?go race a, race b, race c...), some mazes (maze a, b...), and other events (elim, conquer, zombies, killrace, juggernaught...) that can be hosted in different arenas. Unfortunately these are all bot-side at the moment, which is really cumbersome because I'm the only one able to host the bot, so I've been slowly trying to make these server-side. And funny you mention baseduel, since I first brought up the idea to laserman, who then told tm_master about it. I think it's definitely a great idea, and I'll see to it (but don't expect anything right-away, I still need/gotta come up with a map, then design the code). Tm_master as always, still handles staff in the zone. I'm currently at work so I can't get you a detailed list, but here's a rough outline: (ps, I know your name isn't Asteroid, but you chose that as a forum name )

Hey Asteroid! Thanks for the feedback, it's hard to come by lately I'll agree with you on a number of points, especially how the map is a bit too big for a zone with a smaller population. However, the hitch is that we've tried several maps and I reduced the bases all the way down to 3, but it failed to make any effect on population. Seems the current map has actually had the opposite affect and gotten people to play a bit more, but I'll still keep that in mind for the next one (though remember, !buy basewarp # exists for a reason ). It's also hard to come by anyone who will help develop the zone (map, tiles, programming, moderating); everything's on my shoulders, so I'm going bit by bit to restore and improve Deva. What kind of events did you have in mind? What did you have in mind for ASSS regions? Though Laserman plays, he's probably one of the most active players in Deva (mage+ on the other hand rarely played at all, and hasn't played in Deva for something like 9 months now). Syrus, Gibbit, XDOOM, Bossboy, and others gradually left subspace for real-life reasons (marriage, uni/college, work, moving, etc). Sucks, but not much you can do about it :/ Anyhow, keep the ideas rollin'!

Free 20 inch LCD Monitor (SUBSPACE CONTEST)
Hakaku replied to Hate The Fake's topic in General Discussion
Umm actually, it can, really easily. Post up a video of Family Guy or some sexually implicit video, and reaching 5k won't take as long as you think. I don't think you realize that first of all, using copyrighted content to market another product is illegal and infringes on the original author's work; and second of all, you're not attracting anyone to the game, you're just attracting them to the video which has nothing to do with trenchwars. In my opinion, the video should be creative, original, and advertise the game itself. The winner shouldn't be based solely on view count, but also on ratings, comments, and the video itself. -

So there's absolutely nothing in there regarding the video itself... You really ought to specify that the video has to be original content, created on your own, all content used within should be attributed to its respective (copyright) owners, that it must depict Trench Wars. Otherwise, you can just steal copyrighted content from others, have it extremely unrelated, and all you gotta do is write trenchwars at the end... -
That means you have to enter the IP and Port manually within Continuum. Go to Downloads -> Add Custom... Add anything in the "Name" field, add "127.0.0.1" in the IP field, and your port number in the port field. Other users should be able to access your zone without a hitch.
