  1. Have you considered talking to MGB of (forums.minegoboom.com) he might be willing to setup a virtual linux enviroment for you on his server to test with?
  2. If you've got remote desktop access on your server, you should easily be able to install something like http://www.virtualbox.org/ Download a Linux ISO (something lightweight is probably better, i doubt you will need a GUI) and you're be well away.
  3. As the main developer for ss2, The way I see it: Discretion is a "drop in" replacement client for Continuum. (2D raster graphics, It extends and builds on the existing game) ss2 is a new game, so incompatable with exisiting subspace stuff (3D Engine, its all new, new gameplay etc)
  4. What happened to T3?
  5. Incidentally I don't think BDE even owns the Continuum Client, PriitK and Mr. Ekted are the copyright holders of the client according to Help..About. Any changes to the licence would have to approved by both of them. I think BDE only own the SubSpace "content" of which very little of it is still left in most zones. Continuum is designed so that ALL content can be replaced.
  6. Re-read the licence. The terms are very explict, Continuum has to be free of charge at source. There are no get outs or loopholes
  7. This I have no problem with. And legally its fine. We can pay for advertise and store the game on their server as much as we want PROVIDED the game itself is still free of charge. Paying to get the game to be advertised on a service like this wouldn't be so bad, has no ethical issues apart from the cost. An would have no legal problems. It would be like running any other advertising campaign. I agree with the ethical issues, I feel very uncomfortable charging for a free game, people would find out and be very pissed off. Legally the licence for Continuum EXPLICITLY prevents ANY commercial sale of the game. It can't be sold for money. Full stop, no "ifs" no "buts" its very clear on this. There ARE free games on steam, might be worth asking how they got to be free Quoted from continuum's licence.
  8. I know they are keen to switch to ASSS, i wasn't aware of the biller plan (ive not been staff in TW for some time) I guess its more I think the right people wern't contacted, or asked to help. Snrrrub did come to me with a couple of questions about stuff i'd messed about with menu.dll (and to be honest, this kinda thing is not something im good out) but that was all the contact I had if I recall correctly, i know we did talk some. Maybe a "Developers Needed" sorta post here would have worked idk. If someone gave me a decent spec of the SubSpace SSC billing protocol, I together with others could recreate it and create a new billing server using an SQL backend. This is pretty much what I get paid to do already in my job (except I use the HTTP protocol, but its the same stuff) Alot of the problems with development in terms of SS protocol, are caused by the protocol documentation being so poor. Theres lots of little things you need to know that can trip you up. It took me several attempts and alot of experimentation to get a stable directory server going, because the protocol isn't documented properly. This isn't any ones fault, but there are some major inconsistancies in hwo the protocol is implemented, espcially with reliable packets and certain packets Continuum doesn't like getting sent in certain ways. If we knew exactly how subspace physics and the client-side prediction, and protocol/packet interaction worked, it wouldn't take too long to bring out a replacement client. The 2D graphics techniques used in game are all well known. The hard and time consuming work is all the reverse engineering we have to do...
  9. Heh don't hate on TW too much, being the biggest zone makes it harder to make any kinda change, hence a natural conservatism cos if we fuck something up, SS dies pretty much. I think it would have been better if we had got a group of SubSpaces best coders to work on a project like this. Theres quite a few guys who can be trusted on security issues like myself, Samp and Maverick (these are the guys I know well and trust, theres other guys who can be trusted too). I think if you had got Snrrrub to work with us in a working group like this, alot of these issues about fear of losing code would go away, because if one person drops out, its not a problem. Also Snrrrub would have not felt like he was doing it all on his own. I think we would all be willing to put some time into improving SSC if we had been asked. I think this project is still achievable, but it requires bringing some more people in, to work on development. We can't keep leaving everything to just 1 guy, it needs a group effort.
  10. Lol before you guys go all crazy lets see what they say. The biggest problem we have is them using the same name, if they are willing to give their game a different name, or credit SubSpace/Contiuum sufficently i think it would be the best solution.
  11. lol memory is funny thing...and it was polix who spotted the registration, not me as I thought , it was unregistered for a while though. The trademark probably shouldn't have been granted, because the game is so similar (its in space, with spaceships) to an existing one with the same name....
  12. I noticed back in June, Novaleaf Software had registered the trademark "SUBSPACE" They now seem to be in the process of launching a XBOX Live game called "Subspace" Not that i'm hating on their game, and i'd like some sensible discussion before you guys decide to bombard their site with hatemail but i mean cmon its a name already in use: http://games.novaleaf.com/subspace My concern is that it could harm our game (it will get lost in a sea of google searches) regarding the new game. I'm thinking the loss of subspace.net coule be related
  13. I knew a bit of what went on, what made me uneasy with the situation, and why I was reluctant to get involved beyound providing some information about how to hack the menu.dll file, was I couldn't see how adding a new Biller would improve the subspace experience noticeably for anyone. In my mind, I can see it splitting the community even more. The same fundelmental design issues with the Billing system would still be there (which i posted about 2 years ago, along with my solution). What kills a game like this is downtime and technical problems, the current system is stable(ish), its best left alone, whilst we build up a new system and new game. The same reason, my original opionion has changed, I think i now think its a mistake to aim for any kind of subspace compatability, or develop a "compatable" client. A completely new protocol (RakNet, which was used in Galactic Melee, is perfect), which in turns allows a new server design, and new game design is the only viable long-term future for this game. Look to the game Spring (was TASpring) http://springrts.com/ (which came, and has been developed way BEFORE SupCom), its a great sequel to Total Annhilation. The community was much smaller than SubSpace, when I started playing the game, now its substancially larger, because of the progression of the game and development efforts. They DIDNT however try to reverse engineer (beyond the graphics models) and recreate Total Annhilation, they created a new game, and have taken it in exciting directions. This is the future I would like to see for subspace, its unfortunate..i lack the skill to realise it, but I will continue trying Btw Polix, did ghost ever update us on whats happening with the billing scores database?
  14. My post was proved pretty much correct (unfortunatly). Its pretty much acedemic now however. I didn't agree entirly with snruub's agenda, he kept some of the important stuff hidden, but i can understand why. But i think the risk would have been worth it. Essentially Snrrrub had a plan to rid us of dependancy on SSC, i think this is where the ego came in... http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=18484 The future for SubSpace/Continuum is to build a new game and a new community. The problem with a game like this, its so, so hard to do well. I don't think people realise how difficult it is. The technical site of things is for all purposes relativly simple comparitivly. Its gameplay and balancing and making it fun to play that are challenging.
  15. Can you post it here? site is down for me <_<
  16. I have an old mirror of the asss site (1.4 version) I set it up a while back, can't remember why lol http://mirror.playsubspace.com/asss.yi.org/asss/
  17. Ooh i just found something much better http://www.mindcontrol.org/~hplus/epic/
  18. I've created a program in VB to simulate LAG and packetloss, as well a couple of techniques to try and mitigate them both. So far I've added extrapolation, as you can see its not a complete solution. If a sudden change of direction occurs it struggles. In subspace the client knows exactly where all collisions will occur, so no sudden unpredictable change in direction are possible. I need to work out how to interpolate corrections in a good way (like subspace does) but hopefully this is a start. Controls WASD and E = unpredictable change of direction http://subspace2.net/sslagsimulation.zip
  19. Thats like the worst, like absolute worst thing you could possibly do. Tell us what the make and model of the HDD is, and we might be able to help you more... I suspect if its seagate its got a firmware of death bug The data was retrievable but you'll probably totally fucked it now you've opened the case...like you're probably need to spend ALOT of $ to get anything off it now...you might be lucky though...so worth a try: http://techreport.com/discussions.x/16246
  20. Might be worth googling your HDD model...i know seagate ones had a firmware issue a while back, my brother got a new drive for free...but lost all his data
  21. fixed This is on the main directory server, I think its just been downloaded When the server restarts. And they arn't listed on the main directory server (it downloads from their) Not meant to work There is no website.
  22. Btw the time line for the switch would be in the year 2018...
  23. When you create a new name, it actually registers as a failed password attempt I think. I think (if i recall correctly) in the protocol it sends back a failed password response but also tells the client it can attempt to create a new name using that name and to try again.
  24. The post by Warhammer got me thinking, what acctually is the "backstory" to SubSpace. I mean there must be a reason we are flying around in spaceships blowing each other up? All the ships and zones have special names and stuff.
  25. Acctually its a fair point. It tends to be these things are much MORE interesting to read 1-2 years later...when you can see what happened to them, their zone, how things have developed. The old interviews on ssdownloads are interesting. At the time...they often wouldn't have seen that interesting...
