Continuum is already invalidated by the original SubSpace copyright. That just means you've broken the licence that allows you to use SubSpace, this does not prevent you making a derivative work, but if you do, you are no longer allowed to use Subspace. this part of the licence is actually pretty meaningless legally as fair use law cuts alot of it out. you're legally allowed to reverse engineer to provide compatability for example. You mean infringe. There is a substantial difference. Parts of Continuum may infringe on the subspace copyright, but its not entirely clear if they do, but regardless everything that created that was not made by subspace, still belongs to the people who created it (even infringing content), they still control it and can decide who uses it, and how it is licenced. you don't lose ownership if you infringe on copyright. The copyright of Continuum is valid. Take a case of you make a remixed version of a song, you infringe on the copyright making that song, but the remixed song still belongs to you, its an important distinction to make. To be clear all of the content of the continuum zones (maps/shipsets/sounds etc anything player-created) belongs to the people who made it, no 3rd party can have a claim on it, or use it without permission. EDIT: I didn't want to create another post, but i was assuming that they would use ASSS for the server software.

Ill make this point again. There is nothing to hand over, they could setup their own servers already with the resources freely available and design their own maps and tilesets, alter a freely available bot and setup a zone, or even a network of zones. They could do this now with no legal issues. the server code is opensource, and finding artists to create art/tileset/settings wouldnt be that hard with some money. The sticking point is the client, as it has a specific clause in the software licence: Continuum is legally protected from being commercially exploited. Therefore any such use (ie alternative licensing) would have to be directly negotiated with the creators of Continuum. Which brings me back my initial question, where do we (the subspace community) fit into this? and how do rapidshare intend on making money out of continuum?
-
I don't think we need to worry about handing "shit" over, theres nothing to hand over. Pretty much all the subspace stuff is already freely available under open source licensing. The custom zone content is owned by the people who created it, they would require permission from whoever created it to use it, those negotiations would have to be done separately. Its only Continuum and subgame (subgame no one has the source to, but there are the patches), and the only person with the source is Prittk, its down to him if he sells it, its not like he needs the money. What exactly does "Accredit" mean? The legal issues surrounding subspace make it difficult to "use" in the way I think they want to. Much of the content is a legal grey area. Creating new content is pretty easy however and this issue can be easily solved that way. I think cloning the game will be too expensive for them to do, and is unlikely to be successful this game is not as simple to create. Don't let the 2d fool you, its as complex in design as a 3D FPS, if it was easy to recreate, we would have a fully working replacement client by now. Rakkar spend thousands of dollers making a subspace clone and failed with it. Another legal issue is that much of the software used in subspace today are licensed under open source licences, that may be problematic to a commercial organisation (mostly GPL, I for example deliberately licence all my work GPL to prevent commercial interests using it without negotiating with me, or sharing their changes) They can use the server software, code, but that means they will have to share the source of any changes) Now assuming these legal problems can be solved (and they can i think), and a new client can be developed, or an arrangement is made with Prittk and other contributors to purchase the source of Continuum and continue development. Which brings me to my next question, where/why is our involvement even needed in this, they can do all of this without us, its not really decision we can really have any control over? They pretty much dodged that question (apart from throwing in that distracting "you might get a job" hook) in the reply to your email, which makes me wonder why. To be clear i'm supportive of this idea, and a commercially supported subspace with a larger population would be great. But would it become P2P (Pay to play)? i don't feel like we have the whole story here, there must be a business plan somewhere, I'd like to know how they intend to make money out of it. I have nothing against P2P games, but I would like to know upfront how they intend to recoup on the investment they are planning on making.

Intel 4500 HD Integrated Graphics on Lenovo X301 - v.low FPS
doc flabby replied to Ganjaman USS's topic in Technical Support
In the advanced options dialog in continuum there is a option to use "software emulation". This means all the graphics processing is done on the CPU instead of the graphics card, this can be alot faster in continuums on moderm computers because it uses a very old vesion of directX it isnt supported terribly well on the newest cards, it really depends on the gfx card. -

Are you running on vista? I know quite a few people have to use software emulation to avoid fps issues on vista. -

Don't just take our word for it, several websites have tested continuum for viruses and spyware and found it to be 100% clean. http://www.geardownload.com/games/continuum.html http://download.cnet.com/Continuum/3000-20....html?tag=mncol Btw cnet is missing continuum 0.40 someone should upload it again. Remember Thats people playing simultaneously, I think approx 10k people a day login and play.

I didn't say it was a good idea Its essentially another way to tax the population without them realising. But thats what they are going to do (are doing) And of cource but ALL the major world currencies (Doller/Yen/Euro/Pound) are now engaging in this money printing exercise. Its essentially a tax on money.
-
You're going to print it, if you create a 10 trillion doller notes you can easily pay off that debt In fact you've already started this process. Don't let the term "Quantative Easing" fool you, it is simply printing money electronically. The problem has been the chinese hording dollers and not spending them...If they had the spend the dollers they are hording and the money had come back to the USA its doubtful this crisis would ahve happened. I've explained a bit more in detail here. http://forums.trenchwars.org/showpost.php?...mp;postcount=54

Yep you just need to separate them with a backslash: for example ?log\?obscene -
Stacking teams is just getting lame not to mention longtime bugs.

Warbirds ALWAYS kill in trenchwars with one shot if you hit on target on your OPPONENTS SCREEN. The issue is while a shot may appear to hit the target on your screen, the target sees your shot miss on their screen. Its possible to shoot and miss a ship but still kill it For some more theoretical discussion this article is interesting http://www.gamedev.net/reference/articles/article1370.asp Subspace uses method "(A) Tell the server you took out that other alien." Also note In the competitive arenas of trenchwars, such as ?go elimbeta and belimbeta, twdd, twjd there are much stricter packetloss and lag limits. What you may or may not realise is that if you fire a bomb and it explodes close to your ship...it damages your ship instead of your opponents, this is called close-bombing, if you want to ensure you kill people in the flag room...you need to stand well back. I would also add if you think people are cheating in the game, or lagging to much, you should report them using ?cheater We have had a problem in that some of the lag cheats from FPS like CS:Source are starting to trikle down to subspace... I can categorically tell you that is not the case, there is pretty much zero organisation in pub, other than talking in pub chat, you must just look like an easy target So do we...there have been no real updates since 2003....Hence there are new versions of the game being made. -
is there not an option to not allow a user pm access untill they have made a post / 5 posts?

I have all the dlls already installed. I didn't get the dll error i got a "this application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem" Post up the src and let us have a play otherwise

I couldn't get it to run

doesn't continuum use openGl ? It does use directX but a very old version of it - doesn't use the 3D api instead it uses the ancient DirectDraw for displaying to the screen.

I think SOE shut it all down but they had a working server which used LUA scripting... http://web.archive.org/web/20071213000018/....net/index.html

32-bit TGA format is often used the bytes are arranged (RGBA) is often used, and its easy to write a loader for it, plus quite a few software packages support it...its still kinda non-standard though. PNG files also support alpha channel as standard and have wide support and lossless compression so they would probably be the best way to go.
-
I've seen this in action (ie testing) in TW and EG and its awesome!
-
Thats not true. The client supports more than 10 channels, i found this out when working with my tcp biller. You can also speak in chats 8 and 10 as well using ;;10; and ;;8;
-
Ya if i get some suggestions for file formats to use i can add support for them The only models of ships ive seen so far are made in ms3d. (from the 3dships thread) I dont really know alot about 3d modelling unfortunately so i dont know whats best. I know blender is quite popular and free but i couldnt understand it :/
-
Just gave this a little play and its pretty awesome...i love how you have done the text (how it fades in and out)

Press M to view the map Insert changes camera view again... http://subspace2.net/demo13.zip Uses a bit of code adapted from LVL to BMP by Samapico to produce the pretty pictures. https://forums.minegoboom.com/viewtopic.php?t=8296 Now i just need to work out why other ships arn't appearing...when that worked in older versions lol
-
It is a 3d model...its just a very poor creation with really crappy textures...if u zoom in close enough you can see it had 3 dimensions..but ya better models could easily be used. If you replace the files in Resource\Model\StealthWing with a different ms3d model (call it the same name) it will load that instead

Can you ping each others computers? (using ping) If you can....it might the firewall on the computer running the server is blocking the server ports

That little gray thing is my poor attempt at drawing a ship But ya hoping to get other players ships to appear.
