  1. I doubt it will work in 3.1 as it needs directx...
  2. That error indicates that it cant find "bash" shell try changing the first line to instead: #!/bin/sh
  3. Im just depressed, got a new job an increase in salary of 300/mo...after tax im only seeing an extra 50/mo hardly worth it...
  4. LC i've got a script that does this already, that i use for ssdir.playsubspace.com...i don't want money if you choose this one its too simple to deserve it It doesn't need a cron job either, it restarts the server as soon as it crashes... #!/bin/bash #change to dir server directory cd ~/central for (( ; ; )) #repeat forever do #run dir server mono Central.exe > logall.txt done
  5. Hakaku: Agree with everything you say. I'd be quite happy for the council to put its weight behind discretion, SS2 has not proved itself to the degree Discretion has in terms of completion. I disagree with Kilo's suggestion that a central agency cannot have an influence, even if it provides no direct help, by stating a client is backed by the subspace community, it will attract developers too it, as they know it has backing. If someone said, you want to work on the official replacement for continuum? I think people would look at differently to some random unsupported project. Myself I think Subspace II will surpass discretion eventually, or I wouldn't continue with the project I'm hoping to release a demo in the new year, I'm very excited about the direction its going in. Because the whole discussion process is so closed to everyone else, we have no idea what goes on, we have to makes guesses and speculate. Lack of information breeds rumours.
  6. Polix I approve greatly of this, its something I've been wanting to see for years. I can only hope it lives up the its promise <3 I suggest the #1 item on the council's agenda is a replacement client for Continuum. That more than anything will ensure the long-term survival of this game, in terms of short-term survival advertising and the work on the portal are just as important. So really their are two main things to work on, how we are going to survive and grow NOW and in the FUTURE.
  7. Btw samp, consider using "goto" to avoid that "if indent hell " its one of the situations its actually designed for (error handling)
  8. ssdir.playsubspace.com was down earlier due a memory leak caused by a php upgrade, and the main dir server is down for me :/ Its back up now though.
  9. Which they do, i've written a few applications for mobile phones using J2ME as part of my degree. As I said before the only thing stopping me at the moment is lack of a platform to test (real-life) usage, i know java comes with emulators. Lynx: That is only in market share for smartphones. Most people don't have smartphones, and J2ME works on pretty much every phone, even some of those old ones with black and white screens. http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/11/apple-most-blingin-handset-maker-despite-tiny-market-share.ars iphones only account for 2% of the worldwide mobile phone market, that leaves 98% of phones which arn't iphones.
  10. Problem with developing for the iPhone is you need a Mac as well. Plus the market for iphone is incredibly small compared to Java compatible phones like the BlackBerry http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/. its around 4%, which leaves 96% which run Java. Also i refuse to develop for a device which does not allow you to truely own and control it. I don't think it would be very hard to develop a chat client in java, I started to develop one a few years back, but the problem is my mobile plan doesn't allow UDP or TCP connections, only crappy HTTP to websites of their choice (stupid vendor lockin) so I gave up as I couldn't test it (or use it). I've implemented Subspace and Continuum Encryption in my SS API a year or so ago. Snrrrub has provided a service so that anyone can use Continuum encryption. Personally I think it wouldn't take too long to make a chat client. When I get a new phone and plan, i'm going to make sure it comes with full internet (i want to get the nokia one http://maemo.nokia.com/n900/ which runs linux and is fully open source (no need to jail break), and i'll give it a go.
  11. Which would also enable distructable tiles you really could blow up those asteroids
  12. I just tried to visit ssforum and i couldnt see any of the forums without logging in, this changed last night, because yesterday i could!
  13. Theres no reason it shouldn't be any different to a normal XP installation, it might be worth reviewing the FAQs. Also try running Continuum Directly from the location its installed at. You might need to turn off DEP.
  14. Psychology & Computing BSc I graduate this year..the end of 5 long years
  15. ^^ - There's your designer. To be honest, with RubyOnRails I can't see it being hard at all to redesign SSDL from a performance perspective, while also having somebody who's into making things look pretty design all of the CSS/JS/images for the site. If someone can design the CSS/JS/Images for the site to make it look pretty, i'd be happy to (code it/adapt an existing open source project) could probably intergrate the login details with ssforum using the API, which would be idea, single login for all ss sites
  16. I'd be happy to design a new download site....
  17. FROM http://forums.minegoboom.com/viewtopic.php?p=81208#81208 This is a solution for Ubuntu/Kbuntu: mkdir ~/contwine-build cd ~/contwine-build sudo apr-get install checkinstall sudo apt-get build-dep wine sudo apt-get source wine cd wine1.2-1.1.31 sed -i '2568 i\\if (access \& PROCESS_VM_WRITE) return NULL;' dlls/kernel32/process.c ./configure make sudo checkinstall wget http://getcontinuum.com/downloads/continuum/Continuum040Setup.exe wine Continuum040Setup.exe When i get access to a linux machine i will recompile kernel32.dll.so for ya'll
  18. Its easy you setup a server as a permament seeder. I'd be happy to do this..
  19. I personally think everyone needs to CHILL THE FUCK OUT. Its not a big deal, a mistake was made and the situation has been sorted out, theres no need for anyone to quit at all...these things happen...
  20. I agree totally this was wrong...i think pretty much everyone agrees, you don't need to defend yourself, bandwidth is expensive, and high CPU usage will kill a server, i run a webserver myself, i know all of this. I would be pissed as well. What I was trying to do was move this thread in a wider direction, to look at the causes of this behavior, because it happens fairly freaquently because this comes down to fea, suspicion and frustration. People in this community don't trust each other, they worry when the next person will suddenly disappear, fucking up shit, or they get frustrated with the lack of progress. Having an offsite backup/mirror of the SSDL website isn't such a bad idea, but the way it was executed was terrible and damaging, but with communication this could have been arranged in a way that didnt harm the game. Perhaps they could have posted the idea in this forum, we could have discussed it, and found a solution. If we can produce an area for people who GIVE to the game like yourself to communicate. I personally think its time for the people bankrolling this shit to take some more control and responsibility over the direction of the game, after all its only though your general donations this game continues, so we should be working together and communicating in a working group. This way we can get things done, and use peoples skills in a positive way.
  21. Its normally polite to ask someone before you download large amounts of data from a web server. If you don't want to ask, just do it slowly, so you don't kill the server...If you'd downloaded a file an hour, I doubt anyone would have noticed and you'd have downloaded the entire server in a few months. The problem I think is the lack of joined up thinking and communication...and it goes to the core of subspace. The SSCouncil is full of inactive people who don't talk, and generally hate the game and don't play any more. The few active members get frustrated with the uselessness and anti-innovatoin mindset of the council. People get frustrated and end up doing things on their own without realising the concesquences....because of this lack of communication... I suggest, we form a new council for Subspace, membership is determined by what you GIVE to the game (not what you gave) and your responsibilities to the game, and it should be forward looking, and inactive members removed swiftly. Why are we bothering with a failed organisation... Some of the members would be the same, (Prittk and Ghost Ship, as they still GIVE to the game), but i think most of the current SSCouncil members don't do anything for the game anymore.
  22. Nice idea, but its a bit like letting all the criminals outta jail. Nice idea in theory, but some people are just bad or like fucking things up for other people. Cheaters being allowed to play will kill this game quicker than anything else. I remember when a cheater entered TW a few years back and no moderators were online, it pretty much killed the only public arena open...everyone left. For a first cheating offence, bans do expire eventually. I don't think new players get caught in bans that often. The people who have been permabanned are for a reason...
  23. If the council can't even help out the LARGEST ZONE in this game to setup a DEV server, what exactly IS the point of the council....
  24. Man another quitter. Things get a bit difficult and people give up...All those people who were keen to help get disappointed once again. I know for a fact im gonna piss people off, and i've already pissed quite a few people off...but thats the price you pay sometimes
  25. I made a post a while back describing my approach to user authentication i think. I even implemented an authentication server. It worked something like this. (The design changed alot from what was originally posted) http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=19133 - Clients have Biller public key. - When clients login, they encrypt their username/password/etc with biller public key. - This is given to the zone. The zone forwards it on to the biller. - The biller decrypts the information with its private key, and tells the zone if the player is allowed to connect. - The zone then decides to let the person connect to the zone or not (local decision) - i had the idea of separating the chat services from the billing services The only way this could be abused is by hacking the biller. A monopolistic biller is actually the BEST solution, provided that anyone can replace the monopoly is needed. We don't want to have to remember different usernames/passwords for zones. And this option means you could run your own biller, and install your own key in the client. Thus leaving the system open, should the main biller collapse, another one could take its place.
