  1. You're only proving that you're not my friend. Friends care about stuff like that even if they don't like it themselves. Ok wtf You better not be trash talking scar
  2. Btw, you should all play Pirates, Vikings, and Knights 2 with me. It's a free source mod, so you only have to own one source game, like CS Source or DOD Source or HL2. You get it through Steam store. It's Pirates vs Vikings vs Knights in a first-person melee game. It's amazing
  3. Yeah, I wish Continuum were on Steam. Might bring some attention to the game.
  4. KevinJRussell Hi guys. As those of you who actually know me noticed, I don't really get on Continuum anymore. But I play a lot of Steam games now. Day Of Defeat Source, L4D2, Alien Swarm, and Pirates, Knights, and Vikings 2. I'll probably play NS2 when it comes out. And I play a ton of StarCraft 2. I'm picking up League Of Legends as well. Anyway, all the cool people are gonna add me, so you might as well go ahead and do it now.
  5. Two pages should be easy, the only problem is gonna be sources, if your teacher wants them. Because of the nature of the game... the best sources, the only real sources, are going to come straight from the players. PriitK, GS, JeffP... those are probably the only acceptable sources as far as a research institution like a college is concerned. All history comes from people, the only time you can use a book or internet source is if that book or internet article was written by someone who is reputable. You kind of have an advantage in that you can speak directly to those involved, except, they probably won't actually listen to you. The only other things you could do would be to find archived websites or something from zones, which would prove that they were around at the time the website was, but that's about it. Continuum's history is basically already lost, even the people who should know what happened, don't. At least, their stories conflict. So you're kinda screwed. Should be easy to write, though.
  6. They don't need us any more than Blizzard needed the creators of Everquest(hint: they did not at all). If they have the knowledge and resources to create a working client/server, they can definitely make a few automated bots, and a few unique zones. Likely, they'd just create a client/server that was much more powerful and didn't need bots, and while I love our programs like DCME, and I'm very impressed with it, there's no way they wouldn't be able to make something at least as good, if not better. They won't need us at all. This isn't a conspiracy, and we can't just get rid of all our content. I don't know what you're trying to suggest, you mean taking down SSDL, and MGBF? It's not possible, because we're decentralized, and even if it were, it would destroy the game. If they have any job offers it's because they recognize that it takes actual intelligence and skill to do as much as the "executives" here have managed. Not out of necessity. I have never in my entire gaming career seen someone with the ability to make their own online game, release, host, and distribute it, but not actually be able to manage it. It's like the IT guys at my college learning how to hook up a network who are convinced they'll get a job somewhere where they'll get to manage everything, and "code monkeys" will do all the bothersome coding they never learned how to do. It just isn't going to happen. Yes, we have knowledge, experience, and original content we can offer them, but they're on a level above that. Hell, even our knowledge and experience is definitely questionable. We've had more drama and zone closings because of stupid shit than any other game I've run into. Continuum has held on by a thread. This is an offer, not a threat. They don't need to threaten us and we wouldn't have a single bit of leverage if they did. Don't freak out. It works both ways, though. It's incredibly unlikely they could ever end up in a position to kill Continuum, either, except by simply offering a superior product. Which, though I know people would bitch about it, would be a great thing to happen to the community.
  7. No, but there is a group of content that people think of when you say "ours". Like I said, the person who sent the e-mails doesn't understand the situation. I originally thought the same as you, that the game would have to still be player-run, but I think Infantry has shown that to be untrue. Infantry had the same basic gameplay, and it wasn't player-run. In fact, it was pay to play, and still popular. It was no WOW. But any game that can support a paying playerbase for several years is a success in my book. So it is possible. I just don't think it would be worth my while. Besides, I think of Continuum as more than a game, and the fact that it's a game that allows you, or even encourages you, to try your own hand at creating zones, is a large part of that. If we do anything, it should be to tell the guy who sent the e-mails exactly how important it is to have things open-sourced and player-run. There's not much else we can do, and of all the things we've learned, I think that is the most important. It doesn't really seem like their plan allows for true decentralization like we almost have now, but there's no reason they can't keep things player-run.
  8. I have no idea what's going on here, but it doesn't sound like... anything. Everything that can be referred to as "ours", is either owned by... whatever company owns SubSpace proper now, or is PriitK's, or is open source licensed GPL. There's not much we could "let" them do except have administrative access to the forums, which is basically useless. Basically, they want their own zone, and maybe control over the game itself. Though it sounds like they may only be interested in the latter because of legal issues. So they have a couple options. Nothing's stopping them from creating their own zone, and if they actually got a population, I'm sure they'd end up with SSC biller access. They almost certainly wouldn't be able to buy PriitK's software off of him, even if he were legally allowed to sell it, and there's nothing we could do about it anyway. I think they think we have more control over the game than we do. What we do have, we freely give out, and there would be no reason to deny them anything just because of who they are, so no problems there, right? Or they could just clone the game, which we can't control and can't even begin to control. No one here can. No one here could file any copyright claims, which they'd probably get around anyway. I can't imagine why they'd talk to us at all, unless they want our help. Personally I think that's a bad idea, SS administration brings more drama than productivity, but I'm sure if they ask for help people would be willing to help them. Again there's nothing we can do because our code is either already open sourced or completely unavailable. Only other thing I can think of is if they just straight up bought SubSpace from whoever owns it now, and tries to fix up SS's old source code. This is stuff we don't even have, and can't give them. Again, our only involvement would be if we were asked, and again, I'm sure some people would be willing to help them. If not they'd probably do it anyway. I'm not sure what's going on but it's obvious we aren't going to affect the outcome regardless, and it's also clear that whoever sent those e-mails doesn't understand the situation. Personally I don't think a major company would be any more capable of making SubSpace/Continuum successful than we were, outside of their ability to advertise. I think that with proper advertisement, this game would be a lot more popular, but that's just speculation. They don't know anything we don't, though, that's for sure. If they've got the resources and the rights to do some serious work on this game, then they're going to do it, and if they're nice enough to let us, some of which have some small degree of experience and may be able to give some proper advice, help them out and give them our ideas and plans we've been thinking of for the past 10 years, then obviously we're going to do that. If they don't let us then we're SOL anyway. So there's not really any discussion to be made.
  9. Man, I'm switching to fiber... well, they were supposed to hook it up Saturday. The tech couldn't figure out how to hook it up. Wtf, I can figure it out, and this guy gets paid to NOT do it. So hopefully they'll hook it up today. I hope the rest of my experiences with them aren't as bad as this one.
  10. oh no, the internet fame we all worked so hard for is going to waste! no one will know my name....
  11. I missed you JDS I even made a card to show my love for you it is either a heart or a ribbon or a superman shield... ps aya misses you too
  12. o u got number reverse

  14. yo it's my birthday on the 11th btw haha who made this sig banner for me again?
  15. R O F L please tell me i am not the only one that sees the irony No, they should be public knowledge. If you're suggesting that these things should be done in secrecy, then you clearly have no idea how SubSpace works. Anyway, I can't believe how great this topic is. Aceflyer straight up completely !@#$%^&*ing FAILS at ignoring, and throws the biggest !@#$%^&* fit in the history of SubSpace. Nighthawk without asking ANY questions, doing any checking, like, bothering to check with the accused to get HIS side of the story, or... most importantly, seeing the act himself, goes ahead and makes a netban. Don't get me wrong, I think certain chats should be moderated. As a lot of you might remember, we recently went over the fact that it was a shady area in the rules, and it's not very well established. Some people agreed with me(MTN), and others were very against moderating chats(Hoch, Hakaku). But when the netbans were made, it was only after being seen firsthand by a netop. I would've hoped that would have set precedent. Anyway, I'm going to strongly suggest AGAIN that the SSC make some solid rules on moderating chats. Now, remember, there's no great way to do this. But here are a few stipulations I propose: 1. Any "infractions" have to be seen by the one who actually puts in the netban. The purpose of this is to enforce a little personal responsibility. There shouldn't ever be any "oh i put in the netban because HE told me to, its his fault". 2. WHICH chats are moderated is very simple. If you can convince a netop to join your chat, then you can get it moderated. Netops shouldn't be forced to moderate chats. But if Cre comes up to a netop and asks for help with a spammer in ssdev chat, they'll probably want to help. As for what should be moderated, I guess I'd define that as spam. Anything that disrupts the chat, really, but it needs to be solidly defined. If you notice, these are really more of rules for the admins, not the other way around. As all of you know, abuse is rampant in SubSpace. The people in power need to be bound by rules, even more so than the players, BECAUSE they have power. But rules are supposed to be there to protect the player. In this, and in past situations, I believe rules like these would have protected the players. So hopefully someone will think about this.
  16. Then you're pretty out of touch with the SubSpace community. I've never even heard a council member speak positively of the council. Furthermore, the higher up people are, the less they seem to think of it. The closest I've ever come to hearing a positive opinion is hearing people call it a "necessary evil". I don't know about you, but "evil" is definitely a negative view in my book. Also, "prolifically"? Are you seriously complimenting the flamers?
  17. This sounds like another attempt at power-centralization. These forums are probably the only thing in SubSpace history that have ever shown any degree of integrity. Why would you want to move away from it? SubSpace is a decentralized network with a centralized community, and it's that way by necessity.
  18. Oh !@#$%^&*, time to make some "Most Popular Player" tags for my wiki
  19. Aceflyer> Rare - I was wondering if Hyperspace would be interested in participating in a banlist pooling endeavor to enhance alias checking across zones. Current zones include Trench Wars, Metal Gear, and a few others. Oh man, a "banlist booling endeavor". This guy must be a genius to create something like that.
  20. That's a re!@#$%^&*ed idea. First off, no offense to any of them because I like them all, but none of the devvers you mentioned actually do enough work to justify a real devver's pay. If your logic is that they would step up their production if they were getting paid, that might be true, but a lot of the "devvers" would just be leeches. Given SubSpace's history of corruption, this would never work. Maybe you don't want to sit hours on end devving for SubSpace, but lots of people do. It's true that, with more money, you might get some better, more dedicated devvers in SS - but more than likely, you'll just get people looking for cash. And either way, it's at the cost of your players. Yo, JDS was probably just a little bit high when he made this topic, but there is a point lying somewhere in there. SS is still alive not because of the zones, but because of the community. You can tell this is true because any zone that doesn't have SSC access dies within a few weeks - players aren't willing to leave the community. So, in that sense, spreading the players out across several zones is, in some small part, detrimental to the game. Of course, lumping all the zones together isn't going to work. But it doesn't mean that every plan to increase communication between zones, or increase intra-zone participation, is going to fail. There are a lot of people who have played SubSpace in the past, but every time they decide to re-install the game and play for a while, they have problems finding fun zones, or finding a flag game that's playing currently, or whatever - unless they go to EG or TW. If they don't happen to like those zones, they're just screwed. I think it would be nice if there were some way for players to come to SubSpace and see a list of currently active games, or whatever, so they could see, "Hey, there are a lot of people playing (some type of game) in (some zone), I'll go check it out." But I certainly can't think of any way to do that. Most zones just run games constantly, and it's hard to tell if people are actively playing the games or not, or if there's just one scout in MG who's trying to win a game while no one's looking, or whatever. But maybe there is some way to pull something like that off. I think it should be thought about, at the very least.
  21. I think the only real problem with hosting is SSC related. Especially trying to get SSC Linux hosting. >_>
  22. I think 5 cent candies is a Canadian thing....
  23. first off you used double quotes inside double quotes which basically means you're gay also xfd at you trying to defend nike's honor your name is not Ace "Knight In Shining Armor" Flyer why calling nike a !@#$%^&* would prompt you to assert yourself as the true knower of nike's life secrets i don't know
  24. The only map editor I know of that doesn't let you use regions is SSME, which is old and outdated and no one should be using it now, because every feature is replicated in another map editor. But I'm pretty sure you don't use it anyway, since you use special tiles that can't be found in SSME. So explain what map editor you use that can read special tiles fine but can't handle regions?
  25. Btw, you and D1 are never on, which makes this post pointless and makes the forum a great place to complain about mod abuse
