  1. Oh no ... I thought of that when you said you brute forced it, but then I thought nobody would actually do that. Though that's the same as doing it by hand, just automating the grunt work.
  2. Winner! Though what do you mean by "brute forced it"? Solution below:
  3. There is no more information required.
  4. I think we have some people here (myself included) who would enjoy a good brain teaser or two. Post them here for people to work on. I'll keep track of the questions and solutions in this post. Two Positive Integers (solved) Pills A and B (solved) King and the Blind Mathematician (solved) Ladybugs on the Complex Plane (solved)
  5. I agree (we need an emoticon for that). These interviews could be used to collect a little more Subspace history. I don't even mind people bragging about their accomplishments!
  6. They already say it's "in development." I question why they didn't just develop it with their initial production runs, but meh. I've run into lots of hardware programmers and debuggers (okay, maybe three) that use a parallel interface. Also it would be easy to implement on any custom interface. I've had good luck with USB serial dongles, but bad luck with USB parallel solutions -- since I have the hardware on my motherboard, I figure it's easier/cheaper to just use it. I'll probably end up buying the pictured item and then just run cables from there.
  7. I'm lazy and it's actually kind of difficult to machine cheap plastic. I'd only have one shot using the panels from the front of my case.
  8. Short: Need pictured item, but for front of computer. Long: On the odd chance that anybody reads this topic and wants to help me complete my computer, here's a request. My motherboard has serial and parallel port headers. I would like to use these. There are brackets that connect the headers to ports at the back of the computer (pictured below). I will end up buying this if need be, but I'd like something for the front of the computer, either in a 3.5" or 5.25" drive bay. I've searched the internets far and wide, but the closest thing I've come up with is this front panel system. For some reason, they have serial ports but not parallel ports. Anyway, if you're bored, help me out. http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m222/legoblocks/misc/HDW006117.jpg
  9. Just built it a few days ago. This is huge for me, because up until now I've been using an old AMD Athlon 64 4000+ laptop that ran at 70 degC constant. First time I built a completely new computer without using any old parts, so I had to share. Case: Rosewill R101-P-BK mATX Computer Case with 120mm Fan Power Supply: Corsair CMPSP-400CX 400W ATX12V V2.2 80 Plus Certified Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA785GPMT-UD2H Socket AM3 / AMD 785G mATX Motherboard Processor: AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz 6 MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 80W Dual Core (unlocked to quad core) Cooling: OCZ Vendetta Aluminum & Copper Intel/AMD CPU Cooler Memory: OCZ OCZ3P1333LV4GK 4GB PC3-10666 (DDR3-1333) CA7 Dual Channel Memory Hard Drive: Seagate ST3500418AS Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA II 7200 RPM 16MB Buffer Optical Drive: Samsung SH-S223L 22x SATA DVD Burner Drive Black Graphics Card: MSI R4350-MD512H 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card Total cost shipped was $399.19 after tax, cashback, and rebates. It's pretty zippy by my standards. I'm running triple 21.5" 1080p monitors on it.
  10. I have this same problem on my new Windows 7 machine. For some reason, it wasn't propagating the permissions when I set them for the folder, so I set them one-by-one manually. This did not solve the problem. I tried moving it to my documents folder, which did not work either. It's saved properly in profile.dat, but the menu option always gets set back to something else.
  11. I bought the Orange Box when it was $10 on Steam. Unfortunately I get headaches and nausea from playing 3D games (Subspace is great), so I only lasted about 5 minutes each on Portal and Half-Life 2. The Civilization IV pack was on sale for $20 last week and so I nabbed that, plays like a dream.
  12. Don't knock on Jimmy Carter. He certainly didn't get the prize because he was a successful Democratic politician. Your complaints about Democrats receiving Nobel Peace Prizes implies that you either think more Republicans should receive it, or that you have some trouble seeing that someone can be honored for their peaceful endeavors irrespective of their political affiliation.
  13. From my perspective, President Obama should not have received the Nobel Peace Prize. If it was a political move by the selection committee, it certainly wasn't a very smart one. However, I understand Obama is perceived differently throughout the rest of the world than he is even by his supporters in the United States. From that perspective, it may have seemed more appropriate to award him the Prize.
  14. Dr Brain
  15. Damn Brain, you cold. There's not too many old farts here. I started playing in 2003. It's neat to hear from somebody from waaay back though.
  16. I don't think it works by invites, at least, I don't have the option in my account to invite people. I got mine just by signing up early.
  17. Agreed with Sama. Google the error, and if you still can't fix it, tell us about it again. Gmail audio and video chat has always worked for me in the past (for the 4-5 times I've used it).
  18. its a netbook..... thats a problem right there. It's actually not. It has a 15.6" screen, among other features.
  19. This Asus is pretty badass as a working laptop. It's $750 and claims 12 hours battery life. I'm tech-lusting for it and I might buy it ... I already have a Asus netbook though. The netbook claims 9.5 hours battery life and I get about 8.5 using the WiFi, so it's not bad at all.

I think everyone has this same problem.
  21. Daaamn. I can see how you could easily be labeled a spammer.
  22. its* The reason food prices are as low as they are in the US is because of illegal immigrants who do the jobs that US citizens won't (at least not for the same wage). Not saying it's right, just pointing it out. :-) And it is pretty hard to immigrate to the US if you're unskilled and don't have any connections to people here.
  23. Some of you here might be interested in this blog post from Backblaze, an online storage company. I thought it was a pretty interesting read. http://blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/petabytes-on-a-budget-how-to-build-cheap-cloud-storage/
  24. You can get Windows 7 and other Microsoft software free if you have an MSDNAA subscription that includes it. Many colleges and universities offer MSDNAA accounts to their students. Additionally, if you're an IEEE student member, you have an MSDNAA account through them. Edit: Also, Sama, what are you doing upgrading a computer as old as that? New computers are cheap to buy or build!
  25. No survey site is a substitute for a real job. ...but, $40 isn't bad. How long did you spend doing that?
