Maybe the "brick and mortar" stores are getting hurt, but the recording industry, as a whole, will remain strong (the recording industry includes the producers, engineers, editors, agents, etc. all of whom remain essential ingredients to a well produced album. I would even go so far as to say that record stores wont entirely be forced out of the market. There are basically 2 types of stores: Chains (Sam Goody, etc.) that are found in the malls across america, and who offer teenagers (the big spenders) things like posters, CD inserts, and promotions. These kids probably listen to songs on walkmans that their parents bought them, rather than on $200-$400 mp3 players. (I know that burnt CDs are still an issue, but that is limited by a number of factors as well.) With all of these things combined, it's easy to see how the chains can survive. Independant stores sell specific types of music, typically non-mainstream. There is a large amount of consumers who still buy vinyl and many who prefer to buy used CDs (like myself... I rarely buy any music when it's brand new.) Both types of shops provide additional products such as apparel, stickers, posters, and other promotional items... none of which have a comparable "downloadable" equivalent. Loss in album sales will be recouped in the cost of other merchandise, and the consumers will ultimately pay the price ($17-$20 T-shirts, $4 stickers...these things used to be available for much less.) Over the years, I've spoken to many people on both sides of the fence regarding downloadable movies. DVD's sales aren't in much trouble due to the amount of effort needed to make one viewable on a TV, the low quality of the video and sound, lack of extra features such as deleted scenes and director commentaries, and the entry requirements needed to gain pirated video (high speed/bandwidth connections.) Since the cost of TV's, DVD players, and an acceptable 5.1 digital audio setup has dropped by quite a bit over the past few years, as well as the price of DVD's and the availablility of used DVD's, this market isn't in much peril at all. One last thing I do want to point out though... Used CDs, DVDs, Video Games, and other Media generate NO profit for the original producers/distributors. This type of product can also lead to a decrease in sales of "New" (still in the plastic) products. These sales are pure income for the shops which sell used media, with a low cost of overhead (go to your local blockbuster or electronics boutique and trade some stuff in and see how much they offer you for it.) I would again wager that this type of sales contributes to a lot of the loss of sales being claimed through mp3/video/media pirating.

unfortunately madhaha, your article makes no !@#$%^&*ertion that P2P improved sales. It never created any supply/demand relationship between sales and P2P file sharing. The article actually argues against your theory. What is being pointed out is a well known misinterpretation of success, which is easily described using the stock market as a model: The rate of inflation is 3%. An index fund represents the overall growth of any stock market (there are index funds for the NYSE, NASDAQ etc.) and this growth is typically 13% a year. If an investor sees a net growth in their fund of 8% during a year, then essentially they have made 5% growth on their investment (you must maintain at least 3% growth or your investment is actually losing value due to inflation.) So the investor says "woohoo, I made 5% above inflation!" While the knowledgable investment agents know that the stock market, as a whole, has increased by 13% and therefore the given investment has actually lost 5% of its value, due to the fact that the market, as a whole, grow by a total of 13% (10% growth after inflation, compared to 5% of the example fund.) This is the same thinking that this article points out. Just because sales continued to increase during the prevalence of file sharing, that doesn't mean that sales weren't hurt by them, and it definately doesn't infer that file sharing helped those sales.

continuum/ss uses a different default 256 color palette than the windows 256 color palette. Some video cards get confused when switching display modes.

amen, my brother.

just want to show exactly who is getting ripped off when an mp3 is illegally downloaded, and by how much.

just some interesting data I found: http://www.cnn.com/interactive/entertainme.../cd.pop.pie.gif

in SS 1.34 if you leave the playername empty, or start it with an invalid character, and try to enter a zone, it shows this: http://www.alphasvs.com/images/symbol.gif In Continuum .39, if you leave the name blank or starting with an illegal char, it only shows: http://www.alphasvs.com/images/connection.gif Thats pretty confusing! (i tried it with cont .37 too, but it just keeps telling me the zone isnt connected to the correct billing server, and asks if i wanna use the same password anyway... over and over and....)

basically ya...anyone out there that's got a resume that's better than PriitK's and willing to do this for free? anyone? anyone? (long echo) Considering what features have been added so far, I'm a happy camper as-is. Sure I'd like to see fast and expanded development, but... you get what you pay for! (this is also a reference for the people who are keeping track of the P2P discussion. ) And I'm pretty peachy (now that prox is fixed - I think.)

I think the solution to this (which would require an entire rewrite of the curent code) would involve separation of the networking code and the game code. It is possible to allow users to change the graphics, movement, lvl, lvz, etc. without needing access to the source of the networking code. It would help if there was a single player interface that could be put in place of the multiplayer networking interface, to allow for testing. But honestly, I think the time spent to acheive this would be better off spent on a scriptable subgame. Server side bots/scripting would be embraced by the community moreso than a scriptable or rewritable client.

not all bugs are problems, but they are still bugs.

so im tapping along with the beat, its a really fast techno song, and im not hitting up or down arrow, just left and right. Now mind you i'm also a drummer... i hit left right left right left right etc etc and the ship turns clockwise. Comfirmations, declinations? btw using a logitech rf keyboard (might be the reason, but others in pub also had the same experience)

I think that there are better things for PriitK to do code than this. This is the first time in 7 years of my history in this game that I have ever heard a complaint about a player speccing another player and giving out coords. The only time that this should be considered cheating, is if its someone with 2 computers right next to each other, so that he can glance over and see coords and energy/specials etc. Speccing is used in league, and in old days, it was considered an !@#$%^&*et to have an extra 4 players in spec on your team to shout out when someone had 0 reps. Don't give a player a reason the get revenge and they wont spec you. Get friends to help defend you. Warp or shipchange to evade the attackers. Get good enough to defend yourself. Adding a feature to the game to make it so you die less seems irrational to me. I would say that its closer to cheating than having ppl spec you. And btw, cheating is when you have an unfair advantage over another player, that isn't available to them. You can always do it right back to them. It's definately not cheating. But I will admit that there may be a desire for certain zones to add some options to enhance gameplay. I still think that there are better things to add that would benefit all zones though.

I never mentioned "success" I only mentioned how much money they made. People aren't getting sued for stealing artist's success, they are being sued for not giving up the proper cash for their media. And you are wrong about Radiohead, they started just like everyone else: breakthrough single, tours with major bands. http://www.iconofan.com/Artists/r/radiohead/bio.shtml I don't like pop music either, but if you would like to record and edit your music using a 32 or 64 track mixer and have experienced and talented people work for you to do this, you need $$. Otherwise you are just another garage band with a 4 track, of which I'm sure there is no shortage of mp3's on Kazaa. Sure those garage bands must be -*BAD WORD*-a happy that millions of people are hearing their tunes. But does that pay the bills? Nope.

agreed akai, but if the RIAA can stop almost all of the illegal filesharing, then they will be happy. As for you madhaha, read what i said... I wanted an artist whose ORIGINS came SOLELY from P2P sources. The only reason prince is able to do what you say is because he has already made tons of movies and music (I would even go so far as to bet $10 that Purple Rain was made (1984) before you were born.)

name a "big name" band or movie or piece of software whose origins come solely from p2p. Then consider how much they make. Compare this to Britney Spears, Metallica, and other "Mainstream promoted" bands which use traditional methods of promotion and advertising. Name a band with a video on MTV or a song on the radio who is not signed to a label and who distributes solely on through file sharing. Your points are valid, but it just doesn't work that way. As far as copyright laws are concerned, yes its a big jumble when it comes to the internet, because US copyright law doesn't always apply to international users. This is the only reason why Kazaa has lasted as long as it did... If you look into the structure of how the program is/was developed, owned, and distributed, you will find that the developers were from europe, the company which contracted them was from australia, but it was a subsidary owned by a company out of asia (I think.) The US has no jurisdiction to stop the distribution of a product which functions in the same manner as Napster (which was based out of the US and thats why it was shut down.) The structure of Kazaa was proven to be a valid way of protecting the product when the US arrested that Russian guy who was contracted to write a piece of software which "cracked" ebook files. He was found innocent of the charges, but his employers were not. Therefore PriitK and his team are untouchable. The next step is to move on to the Australian company, which was owned by yet another international firm. It will take even longer to sort out the laws regarding jurisdiction here. P2P is not illegal, by its technical definition. But P2P filesharing is illegal in almost all cases. Welcome to america, capitalism at its best. We have laws in place and a power system which allows the rich to be, legally, more powerful than the poor. And personally, I agree with it. If you don't like it, go find a way to work the system just like everyone else (the rich) have done. They got that way for a reason and you have all the same opportunity that they have, the poor simply choose not to exercise it. People aren't being "held down by the man," they are held down by their own inadequecies.

The profile name isn't used for logging into the game, it's only purpose is to help you remember which profile is which. Example usage: Since I am sysop of a zone, I login to that zone with a special password and I also use the "auto" field to automatically type something each time I enter. I have named this profile "Alpha" which still uses the player name "Bargeld" When I visit other zones, I have to use my normal password and do not have any use for the "auto" field, so I have a different profile named "Bargeld" which has a different password than my "Alpha" profile, but both have the player name of "Bargeld." Hopefully this has not confused you, it was only meant to illustrate that the Profile name doesn't have any effect on your attempts to login. Now onto the issue at hand... Try this: make a profile named "Test" Playername: fgujifgibevjugj password: test login to any of the SSCX Servers (Alpha, Chaos/premier, Dueling Zone, Poweball, etc.) The reason I suggest these zones is because these are reliable servers which are connected to the largest billing server (the Player database.) If it says you have the wrong password, then change the name to some other random combo of letters (I just mash the keyboard a bunch) and then try again. If you can't login after that, then come back here and provide us with some more details, such as the Zone you attempted to enter as well as the exact wording of the error message. If you are able to login to the SSCX zone, try using this same profile in your favorite zone. You do not need to change anything in the profile...simply click on the zone on the main menu, then click play. If you can login with this random name, then you know that the problem with your "DarkenedMaster" names is with those names, perhaps they are already taken. If you are unable to login to your favorite zone using the random name, then try to change it to another random name. If that doesn't work, then there is probably something wrong with the zone in question.

so, from the replies, I can make the !@#$%^&*umtion that: poor people (or underage folx who can't afford their own -*BAD WORD*-) = thieves.

Because stealing is illegal.

manually remove the programs (look for a unisnt.exe in their main directory and try to run it.) If there is not uninsntaller in the directory, just delete the directory. Download Xteq System Setup and use the unistall editor to remove the listings you want to get rid of (note: this does not actually unistall them, it will only remove them from the add/remove prgrams list so that they dont bug you.) This step is optional, depends whether you have Norton System works. Use Norton Sytem Check to clean up the registry (it will remove the unused entries from the programs you just deleted.) IF you don't have NSW, don't fret it. This step is just for good form, but skipping it should not cause any problems.

this is a definate bug, I've already had a number of reports of this happening (although it doesn't happen to me.)
