  1. From what I've seen, there wouldn't be any more crashes than already if they did it right.

    BaK's Rambling...

I think there was talk of some sort of signing to run native code? Remember, even a scripting environment doesn't completely eliminate risk. Ideally, even client side scripts would be signed.
  3. glad you agree
  4. Basically the conclusion that me/Brain reached is it's not worth merging things back in until we have a way to do this that doesn't involve piling on poor design--that being that asss accepts multiple types of clients but special cases every kind of behavior (ex. if (p->type == T_CONT) { ... } else if (p->type == T_CHAT) { ... })--and given a new client that goes beyond Continuum will be added, and with it the possibility of many variations doing slightly different things and having slightly different abilities there is no good way to continue just checking "p->type" for every single core module. We don't have the ideas fully set in stone yet, but if you catch me in game I can give you a run down of how we have things planned so far. The basic idea though is that instead of having each core module check the client type it will just make a generic "client API" call for which each client can implement its own handler for how to send and receive data. Thus if you want to add support for a new client to the server, you basically just add a new client module--instead of applying a patch like what Bak is basically doing now (while acceptable, it makes upgrading your core more annoying in the future.) With this kind of system you can build a client off an existing client easily without making a lot of changes to server code (beyond one file.) The tricks we still have to work on are the login and encryption processes as they relate to Continuum, and how the receive-data mechanism will work, but soonish I'll set up a branch showing at least how the problem is being approached and hopefully others can contribute some pieces. It's not a hard problem, only a tedious one--converting each core module to not take care of receiving/sending data itself, but passing off messages and receiving messages from client modules instead.
  5. Anything else appropriate to add to the item that would make you use it over getting your own energy scanner (or actually useful emitter?)
  6. cool story, bro
  7. See you in six months.
  8. Can't modify burst settings.. they will only change what you see coming from bursts (per ship.) Please don't use any properties you haven't already seen. Srs (2nd time said now.) It will reduce the chances of an item being used from whatever low chance that is to basically zero.
  9. Cool, I'm ready to build from source as soon as it will work.
  10. Ever heard of System Optimizer? Let me give you a hint. Stop trying to lower bomb delay.

Unless he's still messing with non-integers
  12. don't know really how to take that comment but uh you clearly are misinformed. people just talk about things they know nothing about eh?
  13. You probably should mark items intended to be signature as such, eh?
  14. How about don't assume what's possible if you don't know what you are talking about and then you won't waste your time and ours? Unix pretty much has zero sense of balance, and will reaffirm this time after time after time... Maybe it was unreasonable to assume people could put real thought into this.

do you fail to notice the contradictions when you type them or am I just failing to observe that you were being humorous on purpose
  17. wolfie you know i'm akd right?..lol read my post again with that in mind. more items is good--if they offer something substantial over other items. there's some bombs i was going to put in that never made it out of my notes--including a l3 bomb no prox some shrap. but finding a good balance for the existing ones would be good before compounding the problem eh? about your comment about jav--it's a bomber, but it's also a LIGHT bomber. thus it doesn't have access to the heaviest bombs. as you all know 95% of item suggestions end up being ignored because people try to make items that would be way above the balance level of other items of that type, or otherwise actually reduce customization in the zone instead of improving it, or are just redundant. it's almost never a problem of the item suggested being not good enough as an item. that in mind, if you have some items you want to see, throw some stats out there and use heuristics based on the existing items to find acceptable stats, and your idea could be used. really--the hardest part for me and doc is coming up with a decent name for items, so don't forget to include one (and remember there's a strict limit so try to keep it short.)

PROBABLY (I mean, I wouldn't know, since I am never around right?) because being able to essentially double your energy every life without so much as an anchor to enable you is ridiculous gameplay?

well by that logic we could say not autoblocking your threads was a bug in the forum software

    ignore.txt

Everything about my post was constructive. People who use the ignore function for anything other than blocking spam are cowards. People who announce their use of the ignore function are attention whores. The only other possibility is that they are not really ignoring the person. Clearly if they were going to ignore someone they wouldn't say something to draw more attention from that user. It's the internet equivalent of saying "LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU ANYMORE" or even let's say writing them back a letter which says "I am not going to respond to your letters." So take your pick. Ignore me too, I encourage it--because then you only have yourself to blame when you miss something important I say. Do these forums have an ignore feature? I encourage all of you cowards to shun all of the criticism you fear--ignore everyone who says anything you don't agree with. Do it in real life, too. It's the healthy thing to do.
