Attention Zone Representatives: 2013 Zone Descriptions
Lone Outlaw replied to aquarius's topic in General Discussion
Should change our slogan to "Meet people from all over the world, force them to speak bad english, laugh at them when they do, then ban them." -
Ship design is kind of poor. Armor plating the gunnery cockpits, yet the pilot cockpit is a green house surrounded by glass? Am i supposed to believe the glass is stronger than armor plating? The reliance on turrets is a bit old school technology. Turrets are mostly for medium class, or large ships. Not fighter pilot ships. Starwars and BSG relied on turret technology. It's not a big deal, it just doesn't make the game seem super futuristic. As a more futuristic type of technology or race or time will have a whole different calibur of weapons, and ship design. The only redeeming factor about ship design is that I could design my own ship, so i don't need to have the pre designed ones which so far i'm not that fond of at all. Especially the elevator design to get in, and the airlocks, and the internal design. However the game play is good. I'm glad players can man the turrets, and that many things are not just useless decoration.

The zone list could use work, you could wait for a time when there is an optimum number of people online. Hockey zone has 60 people lately Chaos zone has 72 right now. Hyperspace usually has 20-30 Devastation can reach 12.

It's nice good work.. Reminds me of Cheers logo.

So the game is called Roberts Space Industries or Star Citizen? How will it work exactly, will there be walking on planets at all? Will we actively find ores in an astroid or on the surface of a planet and scan it with a particle beam, essentially transporting all the ore into our cargo bay to mine for minerals and sell them? Will there be hostile environments? Gas nebulas prone to explosions, lightning storms? Planets with giant tornados? Planets with astmospheric pressure so great it can crush your ship? Will things be instanced by solar system? But just flying over a line makes you transfer from one instance to the other without recognizing anything changed? Hmm..
-
Yeah I agree sama about the countermeasures. I was just really appalled by EVE onlines way of handling combat when it first came out. So I am wary of other multiplayer space games. Like wise I disliked instanced games like WOW, the only multiplayer game I liked that was instanced was DDO because the dungeon crawling was fun and required teamwork. But in the end even that game is boring once you hit the max level. Darkfall was just an endless grind game, and I found no game since Ultima Online between 1998-1999 truly had a great sandbox system. Chris Roberts seems to be designing a game like I would though. Many of these ideas I am sure we all had 10 years ago and wanted to see them in a game. This is part of the reason I am highly critical of games, they aren't nearly as good as they could be. Games started being mass produced like the new marvel movies, for idiots, and to generate money but not for a true gaming experience, not for quality. Also Empire at War for Starwars was another game that used many ideas I had for a starwars game. Because in highschool I basically made a starwars board game that is virtually identical to Empire At Wars gameplay. This was six years before Empire at War was developed. Some of the best RPGs I enjoyed were the original fallout series (the new ones are okay), baulders gate, icewind dale, Planescape torment, and even Witcher is okay. But I greatly greatly disliked oblivion, dragon age, and the majority of the never winter nights series. Snes and rpgs like Zelda, Tales of Phantasia, Chrono Cross are a different story altogether but also great. As a side note it's awesome to hear that a game will finally use a shield system corresponding to aft shield, starboard etc. So you can actually lose shielding on one side of your ship, and re-enforce shielding through out combat. I understand thats what you said Roberts Space Industries is trying to accomplish? If so that is awesome because it's been long in waiting for me to finally see that in a game. As well as the ability to have system damage and have to repair during battle or fight despite the loss of the system.

The videos look promising. As long as I can dodge bullets being fired at my hull by moving right or left or going into a roll or flying behind an astroid then I am sold. I like to know I am facing an actual person, and not just automated systems. And that it's my ability that saves me in a battle, and not just the items on my ship (though i agree to some extent that will matter). For missles that lock on, the science behind it would be heat seaking? So then there should be ways to avoid it. Countermeasures that I actually have to time and let go of myself right before the missile hits my ship. As opposed to some automated counter measure which sucks all the life out of the battle because it's totally not dependant on me after i tell the computer what to do. Such countermeasures could be EMP waves that only have a 50 meter radius to disable missles, so you need to set off your wave at the right moment. Or even mines that you can set off once the missle comes in range. As far as I can tell the developer values immersion a lot, and part of that includes player involvement in combat. As well as some type of believable realism in the game. So many things should be satisfying.... Anyway I wasn't trashing Roberts space industry. Was only saying I'd prefer to wait until they are done in 2014 so I can see the whole picture of what they did before I purchase.

If one knows anything about Sci-Fi one would know that Science fiction is plausable. Meaning it has a basis to come true someday in reality. Otherwise its fantasy. This is a science fiction game so it should follow the current laws of physics for example. Alternatively I'm pretty sure technology already exists for counter measures, auto lockons etc. But ultimately people use their own skill in dog fights to aim their bullets or move their ship out of harms way. Otherwise why the fuck do you need to be in a cockpit at all? Especially for a small fighter ship. Maybe if this was the enterprise it would make more sense that SOME systems CAN be automated. But even in Star Trek there is such a thing as manual control. And it's even possible to have players control the gun turrets on starships rather than have them all automated which is boring as hell. I want to fight a real person not a computer. EVE online went way too far with strategy at the loss of skilled combat. I want a game that combines action with strategy successfully. A description of Eve online combat shows why it's a failure. I can have more fun playing a MUD text based game. As such EVE online developers completely failed one aspect of the game, so it will never matter how much else is great about EVE online, i will never touch it. Nothing redeems this failure in game play. Combat in Eve is a mixture of both tactical intelligence and spontaneous decision-making using a point and click interface. While every race has certain tendencies for different battle tactics, a character's combat capabilities are determined by skill levels, the ship being piloted and various hardware modules fitted into it. Outside of decisions involving targeting and selection of weaponry, combat is, to a certain degree a 'hands off' affair, the player decides on the targets, distance at which they want to keep their target, the speed of their ship and the weapons and modules to use. Once activated, the computer runs these tasks until the player intervenes. An extreme example of this is that, if appropriately configured with defensive modules, drones and sufficient capacitor recharge, a ship can perform some certain missions without any intervention from the player past initial deployment to the battlefield.

Still every game has it's flaws, if the combat is like EVE online then it's already deemed not good enough by me. I hate automated lockons, and targetting, and counter measures. I prefer a more skill oriented game, where you dodge yourself, use most counter measures on your own, and require aim to hit something. One simple small flaw is the size of the hanger bay. Might be fun walking 1 mile the first time. But by the 10th time i'll get tired of it. I know they think that huge hanger bay is a great feature to show off their game. But it doesn't impress me. By the way i dislike the design on that ship. I could do something better in 10 minutes. Also i wonder if there is a distinction between atmosphere and space combat ships. I think realistically their should be, as flying through atmosphere is a whole different ball game and ships can be designed optimally for that purpose. I just have a whole different standard for online games. Most of which are a waste of time and pathetic. All i said was I would wait for the game to actually be done before I decide it's a waste of time.

Best case scenario, it gets greenlight, doesn't get cancelled, and you get proven wrong. Worst case scenario it gets greenlight, doesn't get cancelled, and becomes populated again. Damn can't this game die? Another 10 years of trolling for me i guess.

News Flash: Subspace on Steam Greenlight Community Board
Lone Outlaw replied to Navee's topic in General Discussion
Or the short answer to this is not to listen to anything Cheese or Dr. Brain say. Buwahaha But really I thought Greenlight was for developing games. Not even zones get developed in Continuum anymore. I guess it's for any game that wants to get on steam. -
Well makes sense if it's not wrapped in some protective plastic to put it in one of those card holders or a binder or something. Glad you guys are having so much fun with this. When is Roberts Space Industries due to launch? I usually buy games after they come out and some of the hype has died down and I can actually see if it's good or not from tons of game play video and people already playing for a year..

Here cheese this is for you. Remember typing is speach, it's not writing. So grammar doesn't matter. Even a scholar agrees with me. http://www.ted.com/talks/john_mcwhorter_txtng_is_killing_language_jk.html -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Harlock i've seen the series. Has very good music too. Perhaps a motivation for his name.

Learn the difference between inference and assumption. 1. You dislike me 2. Because you dislike me, you will dislike anything i like. (yes you are incapable of forming your own thoughts that don't center around me, because i exist, i influence what you like and dislike and why. Your will is weak.) 3. You don't like Richard, which is why you use distancing language when referring to him. 4. You would rather another project succeed before Phoenix client does, Perhaps Cheeses client, or Jab Jabs. 5. You will likely try Phoenix, but probably in secret, and only to laugh at it and keep people away, i'm sure. I said if you don't want to try Phoenix, i never said you won't. I am not a hypocrite, i am the least hypocritical of all of you. i am precise in my language and you are not. Saying its the same game is not the same as saying it's not an "entirely" new game. How did you know the unverisity pays me $20/h to troll you guys for pshychological research? Yes my motivation is to kill Continuum, especially when i don't log on it. You don't need to kill what is already dead. i don't really object to saying 300 people deserve to die. Since i believe in original sin people for various reasons do deserve death. One because of bad things they've done, two because death is the only promise in life you can be sure of. It would be unnatural for anyone not to die and probably a curse. So i wish death on all of you when it's time. i love Continuum or i wouldn't like Phoenix, if Phoenix was nothing like Continuum, i wouldn't like Phoenix. i don't play anymore, because i'm busy not because i hate the game. And just because i love continuum, doesn't mean it doesn't suck and needs 100 improvements in various ways. Solution is Phoenix, so i'm not complaining anymore, just waiting. -

Well Brain, then we just disagree. But at least we understand each other. If you want to call the other clients the same game. Distortion, Cheese's Client, Java Space, etc. Then you would be a hypocrite though. The whole reason this started is because Cheese wants to seperate Phoenix from the other projects and set it apart. So i took a position saying Phoenix is not a new game. That doesn't mean i think they are the same game. So yeah i agree, Phoenix is not the same as continuum, on a superficial level, purely based on characteristics. Just like you would not be the same like your dad. But you are not entirely new. Some genes are carried over, you might look alike, you might develop the same personalities, you might be an improved version, with a different name, and your own server. Profit isn't the motivation, it's just one of the many things to pursue in the process of making a game. Already stated the motivation was to better Continuum. But Richard isn't me, so i think his motivation is even more sentimental than that. He loves the genre and space games, and programming. Perhaps partly he wants to see if he can do it. And in a way he wants to honor Continuum the game he played for so many years and carry on the Legacy. If you guys want to stay on Subspace/Continuum when Phoenix is done. And not even give Phoenix a try, then by all means, stay here. But i don't even open Continuum anymore. With it's 300 people, dead or dying zones, most of which deserve to die. -
And so twilight is upon us and we're drawing to a close.
Lone Outlaw replied to Gravitron's topic in General Discussion
Dr. Brain Who said Same game? Those are your words. I said Phoenix isn't an entirely new game. Arguing Phoenix is the same as Continuum doesn't even make sense. That's like saying a lemon is an orange. You realize how dumb you guys are for assuming things again? You should take what i write literally. When i say it's not entirely different, that's not the same as saying it's the same game. To be the same, they would need the same name, same server, same protocol, same graphics, same abilities. I've been arguing the whole time that Phoenix is improved. It's not the same. IT'S JUST NOT A NEW GAME like cheese declared it was, in the sense of what it is. In the sense of creation, yes obviously it's new, it started in 2011. In a Superficial sense, sure it's new, on the surface it has a new name, new graphics etc. But the idea is not new, its just an improved continuum, and you can supliment continuums graphics into it. So do i really need to state the obvious again? or can we get past stupid shit to make fun of other people because of your insecurities irl. So to answer your question. By my logic, Continuum might be a more improved astroids. However in astroids your ship shoots rocks and it's single player. In Continuum you fight ships, and the physics of rocks are removed. Hence Continuum takes something away from astroids because the breaking of rocks, and environmental damage is not present. Likewise the creators of Continuum weren't trying to improve Astroids, they weren't even inspired by astroids. So it's a new game. Phoenix Client, takes nothing away from Continuum, IT KEEPS, and ADDS, specifically it doesn't add Dragon Ball Z super saiyan powers. It adds features the community of Continuum already wanted and felt should have been included from the start. Since these non-existent features were universally wanted by the community, that means the community expanded upon the idea of what continuum should be. So some people decided to achieve the ideal of Continuum, thus there are 4 different clients in creation. Richard is doing what everyone else is by realizing continuums full potential, all be it, in the form of Phoenix USC. He made a new name, and needs a new server to do it, but that is of little consequence. Some of these features include getting rid of the limitations in map design and event design in Continuum. Or proper buy menus for your own zone Hyperspace, with graphic displays for each item. The guy writing the "New" Game, (nice distancing language you used) aka Richard, is establishing it as a new game for various reasons. Legal reasons (even though there really isn't much of a risk), as well as profit. He wants the game to be flexible, changeable, adaptable to different platforms, so he can profit. Make no mistake, i am not arguing the game is Continuum, i am just argueing it's not a totally new game. It's an upgrade to Continuum like any other client would be. Or a sequel to word it better. Cheese can name his client "Cheese" tomorrow, that doesn't automatically make it NOT an upgrade to Continuum. If any of the new subspace clients, have a new server or database, it doesn't automatically make them new games. -
And so twilight is upon us and we're drawing to a close.
Lone Outlaw replied to Gravitron's topic in General Discussion
Not sure to what extent any of that matters. Would be too much to analyze. But to do it fast and sum it up. Programmer doesn't matter. (Continuum's programmer has been none existent and we get by, as well more than 1 prgrammer is responsible for Continuum). Website doesn't matter. (We changed websites and forums here every other year). Database and Server hardly would make continuum any less continuum if they were changed. Different Client (i consider this upgrading continuum, especially if it's creation is based upon the original and intends to take and grow from the original). Basically the idea is the same (if not more improved) so it's not a different game. As for name, oh Jeez, well that's a damn easy one "A rose by any other name is still a rose". Protocol might be the only case for it being a New Game. But even then procotocol would just be different and get the same results as continuums protocol. Yes i understand it's not criticism per se. But by saying it's a whole different thing, Cheese is creating an US vs Them scenario. So not worth moving to Pheonix because "It's nothing like Continuum." Which is just not true. If you can do everything you can do in Continuum, AND even more (those things we always wanted to do but couldnt). Then i don't see the problem with it. -
And so twilight is upon us and we're drawing to a close.
Lone Outlaw replied to Gravitron's topic in General Discussion
It's not an entirely different game. Has the exact same feel as subspace. Just because it has different graphics? The zones can load their own graphics and its continuum Plus. You can have your warbird, jav etc. Enitrely different is Cosmic Rift. Just for that i will replicate HS in Phoenix client. All the same tiles, ships, and settings. It will be funny to see how different it is then. OH you mean improved. Yes. Because clients shouldn't just be more of the same old shit. The whole point to making a client is to get rid of the lame ass limitations of continuum that have been holding the community back for the past 8 years. If you want to be a fossile you can be though, just like your own client and pretty much the rest of them. Not much progress lately huh? -
i can spare 10$ from time to time, if you ever need money and it's for a good cause. But seeing as you have it covered then maybe next time.
-
It still gradually represents what i had in my mind of Dr. Brains Involvement in HS. From, 50 different upgrades/fixes in 2010, And likely 50-100 before that in previous years. He pretty much cut down to 5 upgrades/fixes in 2011, and 2 in 2012. (Of course one can certainly make a case that he fixed everything that needs to be fixed, gradually as you code so much, if your coding is good, you eliminate the need for more fixes) And i am guessing his upgrades/fixes where on the high end of something in the zone. Something only he has access too? Like the WIN32 fixes? (sorry i am not a programmer, please bear with my ignorance) All that i aside i started playing HS in 2012, so i think i am fairly accurate when speaking from my own experience. SpiderNL does a lot of the coding now? Of course if you rebut this succesfully i'll concede to your argument. I am just not wholly convinced as of yet. Yes it's true another youtube video does little, and is not what we need, but IT IS better than nothing. And it is useful to do for a person like me, who has no talent to help continuum in any other way. If i could code i definitely would. But all i can do is a make a youtube video. (As an example). Sharvil Nanavati is always involved in something it seems =p, What is his version of subspace called? So yeah, let me add to what i said earlier, big mistake on my part, as i did believe he coded for HS, just not anymore (i was also in a rush when writing, so didn't edit my post like i usually do)
-
There is nothing wrong with being an organizer, who can get skilled people together to accomplish something. Squad Captains do this. People like Dr. Brain did this, he rarely if ever codes for Hyperspace (correct me if im wrong), instead he made the zone, and gathered skilled people together who he could trust to manage the zone the way he wants, and code for it. Your argument can be, well Brain knows programming. So someone should only organize a team or event if they can do those things themselves? One can still lead a group without having the skills of that group. Take for example Game creation. The leader of the project, won't necessarily be able to do everything that the 20 or 50 man team can do. That's why a team is required in the first place. He can be a programmer, but still require a team of graphic designers. He can be a programmer, but still be better suited to running a team of programmers, rather than programming the game himself. Leadership, motivation, incentives are all to appreciated as valueable things a person can bring to the table. The alternative approach is to tell Dezmond. Do nothing, if you won't do it yourself first. If anyone follows this advice, then definitely NOTHING will get done. At least dezmond is doing something, primarly what he can, or is cabable of doing. Which is admirable. It's better to see youtube videos still being created to promote subspace/continuum, rather then to see nothing being made because you discouraged people who can't make videos (For whatever reason, lazy, stupid, busy) from trying to get videos made.
