  1. What you said is an example of a rewards formula change. I'm not just talking about a specific mathematical formula, but the whole system. I specifically left my post void of formulas (so I'm not sure what you think your idea is better than) because I didn't want what I said to get rejected because I put forward an idea that didn't fly. I just wanted to funnel our collective focus to an area that I think needs to be looked at. (Which is exactly what several of your recent suggestions have pointed towards as well) Many people have blamed nano, lack of a reset, etc. I'm just saying that the reward formulas/system were designed to provide motivation during high population. I think they could be reworked to provide motivation in all population conditions. The problem with going back to how things were was that things were changed for a reason. I'm guessing because someone abused it. Because of this, I'd say coming up with a fresh idea will likely go over with Brain and company better than bringing up old ideas. Old bases tend to sometimes show up in hyperspace, old reward formulas do not.
  2. Zone pop has always come back after major item changes. Historically major changes have been accompanied by a reset. I noticed you posted this about the same time I posted my thread. I think what you're doing here + reset + what I said in my thread would be a killer combo for curing population problems. EDIT: +Finals ending, summer coming And conquest will be the icing on the cake.
  3. In my opinion, the formulas for the rewards just aren't built for a low population zone. Lower rewards in low population makes the zone goto from low population to no population. If I'm right the current formulas were worked out during higher population days. In essence the formulas for rewards create a High-Population-OR-No-Population scenario. The rewards just aren't there to encourage people to stick it out during low population. If you want to revive the zone population in the meantime before conquest is done, consider changing the formulas. I know several things have been suggested, I'm not saying any of those were right. What I'm saying is, this is where we need to focus our attention. Not on changes to the item system, to the map, or to anything else. The problem is the reward formulas and that's where the attention needs to be. I have suggested reward changes that may make it seem like I'm only interested in changes that suit my style of play. That's not the case. Now I'm suggesting changes strictly for low population that fit with the current style of play. I think if we put our heads together, we can come up with a rewards formula that is fair, balanced, and works with low population as well as high population. If I'm wrong about this, if it's not the reward formulas, then I'm sure Brain will be kind enough to tell me why I'm wrong.
  4. It doesn't look right on my screen (in twdev). It seems to do about two full rotations with the same look, then it switches and does two more full rotations. While it's rotating the internal structure of the wormhole doesn't change at all... The graphic in this forum looks like the internal structure changes on every frame, so is this my system only or does this happen for other people?
  5. Yes linux was the plan. It's been a while since I used a **n*x... is ubuntu still a good choice? I have a pretty decent machine (i5 quad core, 4MB of ram) so running linux shouldn't be a problem. I'm going to need to refamiliarize myself with linux. My history is that I was tech support for a small ISP back around the turn of the century. They used FreeBSD. I wrote shell scripts and awk scripts stuff and had to manage basics like cleaning up users email boxes when they got too big. But I never did any compiling. Since then I've found little need to run my own linux machine. So I've fallen out of familiarity with it. I'm going to have to relearn working with linux too... that could be 6) in the opening post. I'd like to finally learn how to compile stuff on linux and go with the most flexible language. I don't really want to learn python if I'm just going to run into a need to use C later on. I'd rather just stick with one language. One of my ideas I want to get off the ground is found here: FF7 Materia Battle Arena (hasn't been updated in a few years) I have another project... it's an idea that's hidden in all my video spam, riddles, and nonsense I posted while less than sane. I love a good puzzle And I love being inspired by fiction! While I'm at, why not a little video spam.... Azula belongs in section-8 I think (I think only PsyOps will get this)
  6. Also forgot to mention that rotating the screen 90 degrees at a time was very disorienting to me so probably would never use that feature.
  7. Ok, for a while now I've considered C++ a little too... hard to learn. But I've never had more time than now. And I have some ideas I'd like to see materialize, plus I'd like to help revitalize hyperspace in any way I can. I am 30 years old and I've been coding since 9th grade, just never got in deep with C++. I'm a jack of many languages but a master of none. I haven't coded anything in a couple years now though. I'm looking for tips/pointers/suggestions on getting started with these items: 1) A book on C++, currently looking at this on amazon.com: C++ Primer Plus (5th Edition) by Stephen Prata 2) A website where people are patient enough to answer coding questions when I run into trouble with C++ 3) Where the ASSS community is, learn how to setup my own ASSS server, and post questions about coding ASSS modules 4) Also I've been playing in hyperspace and I know I saw HSCore was released at some point, I would like to work with HSCore to get started since that is the zone I'm used to and know. 5) Recommend an IDE for programming ASSS modules Also General suggestions are welcome. Thanks! EDIT: Added #5
  8. The game itself works fine. But I'm running windows 7 64 bit (home premium) and when I alt tab out of it, it has a generic start menu icon, the name blitzmax application, and the window preview doesn't work. I tried both directx 9 and openGL and they worked fine. i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz, 2668 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) 4GB RAM EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 grahpics Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium
  9. Same, but Hyperspace instead of Chaos.
  10. Actually low population is putting a hamper on customizing my ships for all my styles of play Since I wasn't around at the start of the reset this lull in population affects me more than someone who has already reached signature levels of experience. I think different arenas are the answer for my different styles of play. I really enjoyed gduel for testing skill. Could make it a regularly scheduled thing? As for the role playing. My arena idea which I'm going to learn ASSS to implement will cover that. So I don't think pub needs to change to suit my style of play. I was giving suggestions on increasing the population. Maybe I need to think more within the parameters set by zone ownership/designers and the style of play the majority of Hyperspacers have
  11. Declaring a point to the zone is a bad way to keep it open ended for people to find their own reason to play. I like to build ships based on characters in other games and role play. At other times I like to build ships that I consider not lame and test my -skill- using inferior equipment. At other times I like to build a ship to fill a needed role in flagging games. And there may be other reasons why people play too. So... declaring that the point of the zone is "to get a customized, fully-equipped ship" may be your goal in the zone, but it's not always my goal. In fact the amount of grinding and play time required to get the ultimate items is so insane to someone like me who plays casually that it's really a goal that is OUT OF REACH. I have never played as a "bounty-hunter". Unless you consider a juicy flagging jackpot when there is low population bounty. (not sure that's possible anymore) Maybe if the bounty was worth it I would be a bounty hunter. Good bounty hunters only go after the big bounty. And with low population... there is no big bounty. This could be why the zone is languishing.... because its designers aren't looking at the vast and varied reasons why people play Hyperspace in the first place.
  12. Games always have to be an abstraction from reality in one way or another or else they aren't fun. Sometimes you gotta break the rules of reality for the sake of the game.

    Population

I may be a bit more dreamy-eyed than many... or anyone here.... But I'm also listening to the practical advise given by Brain.... Do you believe things can come back from the dead? I do. Population dies when things get old and stale. It's a fact of games. Change or die. But population never designed hyperspace and population can't save it. Who cares if nobody is here when I finish my "stupid little arena" idea. While you're busy crying the zone is dying, I'll be busy breathing life into the work of my hands. Talk is cheap. I'm done talking.

    Population

good point, but this is a community run by volunteers. Time for people to step up. Take what was great and make it greater. Dr Brain has done his share. D1st0rt, Arnk, Cerium... many people laid down their time to make the zone what it is. In a community of volunteers, when responsible rise up and do responsible things. Things don't die. Will we just let everspace take over??? cause it will. I'm leaving out many people I know... many people have made maps, and contributed to items, moderation, making the zone a fun place to be. I'm on disability. I have a lot of time on my hands... First priority is to figure out something I can do when I'm off disability. But even with that I have plenty of time. I'm thinking about hunkering down, learning some ASSS, and stop whining on forums. But that's gonna take some time. I have an event arena which is going to require a lot of programming, dr brain said if I can get it up in my own zone he'd take a look at it.... that was a few years ago... but the idea is golden, and worth my time. I'm not gonna sit here and say Hyperspace is dying. I'm gonna do something.
  15. I heart u all. This thread was originally intended to encourage people to listen to the ideas of people who have experience running zones. I may not have approached it in the most mature fashion. I get like that sometimes. I think Cheese is a valuable commodity in the subspace world because of his knowledge and experience in the 5 zones he has in his signature. I pay attention to people like that and don't dismiss their ideas. I've seen a lot of his ideas get dismissed for... how can I put it... very lame reasons. As for scarface.nl, I'm sure ezpn is the bomb, I am jelly. When you don't want to kill your enemy, you use a wooden sword. I consider many people who trolled this thread to be masters of the verbal wooden sword. This post is me reversing my blade WOW AN ENTIRE POST WITHOUT ANIME/VIDEOGAME/MUSIC VIDEO SPAM! I SHOULD FIX THIS.... If you know the song in the title you can get the feel of my videos without clicking on them. I'm not really concerned that cheese doesn't feel like wasting his time on my videos. I could type out the lyrics, but that's more spamful in my opinion, so I just do the links and whoever feels like clicking on them can. If not, not a problem, no harm done. The message I was trying to send by posting the poker face video is captured in these lyrics: I won't tell you that I love you Kiss or hug you Cause I'm bluffin' with my muffin I'm not lying I'm just stunnin' with my love-glue-gunning Just like a chick in the casino Take your bank before I pay you out I promise this, promise this Check this hand cause I'm marvelous Not sure if when spidernl said I was captain obvious he realized all this or not I'm wondering if Cre did when I got a +1.... he does run a zone after all
  16. In addition to cheese's idea (or possibly in place of).... I would like it if the kill formula was changed to give more money (and possibly experience) based on the differential between the total cost of each players current ship and items. Thus someone who kills with pea shooter alone can make a lot more than someone with a decked out ship.
  17. don't tl;dr me! Without the videos that you aren't clicking on it's shorter than any one of your "item ideas" which I went and read. Oh yeah, when I logged into distension that's exactly how I felt.... tl;dr Cheese prolly read it and clicked on all my videos and is just saying this to uphold his reputation.
  18. What about adding a metric that grants additional kill moneys based on a total divided by active zone population (not spec). Say $500. With two people playing they get $250 additional per kill.... for 10 people playing it goes down to $50 per kill, etc. This would balance out the sad faces for little population and give people a reason to play with small population. It also wouldn't make a big difference when the zone population goes back to normal. I'd say do the same with experience but I'm not sure how the numbers would work out... you'd have to do a ridiculously small amount of experience for it to not be overpowered with few population... like 6-10 experience.... it would quickly go down (round down) to 0 once more than 5-7 players joined. The only problem I see with this is that uber-lame ship builds actually get rewarded when people log out because they don't want to play against uber-lame ship builds.
  19. What BZAP is asking for is not unreasonable - the idea at least, I'm not sure about programming it. I can think of some other ways to help revitalize the zone if you want. I've been under the impression though that ideas put forward in this forum are laughed or/ignored/determined to be code-wise infeasible/or otherwise set aside.
  20. The way the programming is setup probably nobody feels like going in and changing each item. The programmers in this zone (at least those who have time to program HS) are programming Conquest. They don't really have time to do changes like this... at least that's the impression I got. They feel things will all change once conquest comes so it's pointless to program anything (else) in the meantime. I recommend learning to program ASSS yourself, somehow getting on board the dev team (who knows how that process works), and then coding the change yourself. That will probably be faster than posting anything in the forums.
  21. I haven't seen Equilibrium, just the trailer. And maybe I'm not Johnny Snow, maybe I'll bait and switch and be Conflict Diamond.
  22. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVDiaYQXBVs Dr Brain is a badrearend like this mothertrucker in the video. Enforcer. Family Man. Takes no BS. When I watch this video I think... "Dr Brain vs the SSC, oh yeah baby!" My bets would be on Dr Brain I once told Dr Brain that if I were in "Dr Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog" I'd be Johnny Snow. He told me he likes to think of himself as Bad Horse. I thought that was pretty cool... So that's kinda the understanding I've come to Hyperspace with since then. Dr Brain is Bad Horse... me... I'm Johnny Snow.
  23. This would have been an edit if I was allowed 3 videos. (I have to say this because Brain has threatened me with bannation if I treat these forums like a monologue instead of dialogue) Really I could have avoided all those double posts by editing... then I would have never gotten ban threat in the first place. I R YAMS. Found the omni version (or close enough to it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRXPa01J_fc Scratch that: here's the real OMNI version Except for omni you'd have to call it: Do You Wanna To Date My Signature? CHEESE! U SEE WAT I DID THAT?
  24. I'll say it again, in a language you can understand (since nobody cares about anime) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WnCdf04ba0 Or maybe this version will sit better with you And I'd like to find an omni version... sung by a hot asian chick who's decked out in pink/purple
  25. Should I care what EZPN is? Am I caring about this?
