  1. The same reason Massachusetts has elected Republican Governors in the past. National party affiliation trends don't always hold true for offices at the state level. And why do you bring up Bernie Sanders?
  2. This just in: gay marriage now legalized in Vermont thanks to legislative action.
  3. So this hasn't received as much headline attention as it probably otherwise would have due to the NY immigration center shooting incident, but Iowa's Supreme Court issued a ruling earlier today agreeing with the observations of the Connecticut Supreme Court and legalizing gay marriage in the Hawkeye State. Comments welcome.
  4. This. It is important to go through the proper channels especially in cases like this one where the responsible party is not immediately identifiable.
  5. I think this is a great idea. I've been discussing some variant of this with some folks lately - we'll see what comes of it.
  6. It's the 'getting hold of Priit' part that's hard- harder, possibly, than the 'talking some sense' part. GS is easily reachable in-game or via, as freakmonger says, old contact info.
  7. I've been out of town a bit lately so I haven't been completely on the ball as far as approving SSC Forum registrations go. Hakaku and the two others who registered a few days ago are all set now.
  8. Agreed PoL. Pro-lifers shouldn't have the right to force other people - people who may not share their views - to endure such cruel and unusual torture.
  9. Company A Ideology: Sexist Employees: Exclusively male Company B Ideology: Non-Sexist Employees: Exclusively female Your original argument: Company B pays its employees less. Hence Company A would go out of business and sexism would disappear. My response: But if Company B is non-sexist, it can't pay its employees less. Hence Company A would not necessarily go out of business. Your response: Well Company B is sexist. Hence it pays its employees less. My response: Then Company A would go out of business, but sexism would not disappear. Your conclusion that "sexism would disappear" remains invalid.
  10. Come on... I'd have a hard time saying any of those 'scenarios' are "really believable or even questionable thanks to the state of our society." Let's take a look: The shotgun is in Jack's truck's gun rack. Considering that Jack presumably has not waved the gun around in a classroom or hallway or used it to threaten anyone, and assuming that Jack does not have a prior history of violent or psychotic behavior, why would the FBI be called in? At most there might be some concern on the part of school officials or local police officers, but traumatized students? Give me a break. WTF? A SWAT team to break up a two-party fistfight? The keyword here is 'aspirin'. Again this is a 'WTF'-inducing scenario. Why would any sane principal expel a student from school for having aspirin? Granted, there might be drug concerns, but once the identity of the pills as aspirin pills is established, there would be no reason to expel the student or investigate said student for possession of illegal drugs or weapons. This is just completely ludicrous.
  11. But a women-only company, not being sexist, would pay its (women) employees the same amount the other company pays its (men) employees. So the women-only company would not be able to lower costs.
  12. Are these stories made up or do they reflect actual news stories? Anyone can make up stories. I imagine that they are most likely completely made up. At the very least, they would be based only very loosely on actual news stories.
  13. The counter argument to that would be that covert sexism is the reason why men are still hired.
  14. The test doesn't seem all that difficult. Further, there is some doubt as to whether the test was actually required for eighth grade graduation.
  15. Just some mildly amusing tongue-in-cheek humor. Thanks NBV.
  16. Apologies, but what precisely is the point of this exercise? Creating a zone has never been about speed, it's about quality and making something that players will like.
  17. I agree. I think the principle behind the stat rape laws - i.e., a bulletproof means for nailing manipulative adults - is good, however the implementation and the enforcement of the letter of the law, rather than the spirit of the law, sometimes results in frankly ridiculous situations like 16 or 17 year old boys being charged with stat rape for having a 15 year old girlfriend. In any case this entire topic is irrelevant here. I think this entire regrettable situation indicates that there should be more accurate sex ed, not less, and that perhaps there should be a push for parents/legal guardians to be more involved in making sure their kids don't make mistakes like what happened here.
  18. North Korea's military is still nothing to sneeze at, and they are strategically located to cause quite a bit of grief to the so-called First World. Is North Korea an existential threat to the U.S.? Definitely not. But they could definitely stir some serious stuff up with South Korea or Japan, and hence the U.S., if they so choose.
  19. I think a variety of factors are at work here. First, there is a liberal slant to a lot of the more prolific posters here, so these people probably do want to give Obama a honeymoon period of sorts. Also, FMBI has a point in that the political 'stories' lately are just plain boring, and have been done to death over and over again already. Finally, it's also true that overall interest in this board has been on the decline. So I'd say a combination of all of the above is responsible for the lull in posting here...
  20. The issue with the spam forum was that the stuff in it was, well, stupid, pointless, and annoying. It becomes a question of whether one prefers a quieter, more civilized forum or a rowdier, more barbaric jungle...
  21. Received the following from G o G o via email to GetContinuum Technical Support; I have referred him to this thread for support. Hello, It's G o G o, old SS player. Asking for your help, thx you
  22. It's obvious that Saddam Hussein was a bad person. No one here's seriously arguing against that. But "need[ing] to take a bad man out of power" is astronomically far from being a sufficient, let alone good, reason to invade and occupy another country.
  23. Wrong http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/ai...ce/4219452.html Also, as someone else said, sure they had a right to investigate them... But the FBI cleared them and the company still wouldn't let them on board. I think when the FBI says someone is not a terrorist after investigating him, it's pretty stupid to not believe them. Precisely. As I said earlier in this thread, There was no legitimate reason for the airline to not immediately allow the family to fly on their planes after said family was cleared by the authorities (in this case, the FBI).
  24. For sure. Although we do spend a lot of time trying to protect our civil liberties as well. It may just be that environmentalists are sometimes more 'visible' in everyday life. Part of that may be because grass-roots change is essential for environmentalists, but grass-roots protests aren't usually necessary for civil rights issues. But I'm not an expert on any of this, so don't quote me on this.
  25. Yep. There's standing up for unalienable rights, and then there's blatant stupidity. I'm all for standing up for unalienable rights, but blatant stupidity doesn't really serve anyone's best interests.
