So, how many?

Looks like the theme map is no longer going to be the DSB League Map. At least things are going better in DSB now. I assume that was Hoch's doing, so maybe he realised the players had a better idea, or maybe someone had a word in his ear.

Oh and congratulations on getting banned for having an opinion and believing in the concept of free speech. Question: Why do the most abhorrent, power-hungry, egotistical maniacs always end up as the sysops of subspace zones? Answer: Because they want it the most.

Wow Falc, your list is strikingly similar to my own. I made this list a few days ago: 1. Hoch threatened to shut down the zone, and after a good percentage of the zone had left, he changed his mind. I think we lost about 30% of the zones population in this one move. 2. Other than a few short, token appearances, Hoch doesn't play subspace anymore, and as a result he has no idea how to improve the public arena. Anyone who plays computer games knows that every game needs a goal, a purpose, and a method to win that requires some level of skill. A needless game that requires nothing more than flying around aimlessly flagging or killing is tedious and boring. Hoch is so completely disconnected from the zone that he doesn't realise this. 3. There are countless brilliant ideas coming out on the forum, and yet Hoch does nothing to support them or even create discussion about them. 4. There are countless talented bot coders building these brilliant ideas for DSB and offering them to be tested, yet they come up against a zone owner who does almost nothing to make that testing happen. 5. With regards DSB League, Hoch has trusted an incompetent staffer to co-ordinate league for several years, Beer hunter, who has consistently failed to deliver any of the desperately needed changes, and has allowed league to decline year on year. Why did Hoch do nothing about this, despite a majority of players stating how bad Beer Hunter is? Because Hoch is disconnected from the zone, he doesn't play the zone, he doesn't know what is going on. 6. A theme map was recently tested in pub. The map was a downgrade, but rather than my opinion, let the population graphs for the last month tell you the result of it. The decline through January left the zone on it's knees. There was 2v2 in pub at peak times. They finally took the map down and put the original one up, and that evening we had 14v14 in pub again. 7. Given this horrible reaction to the theme map, would it surprise you that they are considering this map for the next DSB League? Well unfortunately they are. They have tested it several times already in mock-matches, and if they finally decide to use it in league, it will probably end the zone. It's something that is so incredibly stupid, but it's not beyond staff... they are testing it afterall (they're not testing any other map). We simply cannot let them kill the zone through such mindless incompetence. 8. The league co-ordinator asked months ago for feedback on what would make a good league, stating that he personally would like to see 9v9. Nearly everyone who responded on the forum said they would like 6v6 or 7v7 for a league. It was announced recently that 9v9 will be tried. He completely ignored the feedback. 9. This imminent league, that could destroy the zone due to 9v9 gameplay on a map that is proven terrible, has taken the staff months to get ready. However, the theme map they want to use was built months ago, and 9v9 was apparently chosen by Beer Hunter months ago too. So what have they done? The answer sadly is nothing.

I tried those things with the nvidia card, DEP and so on. I can't get Windows Virtual PC for XP Mode because I have Home Premium version of Windows 7. Nothing seems to work for subspace 1.35. On another note Continuum works OK, but all the zones come up red, and I can't download new ones. It's strange because I can enter the zones and play (with some ploss), but I don't understand why the zones are listed as red with no player numbers. It's like how the zones look when I'm offline.
-
Great, now I can't get it to run in Windows 7... even if I change the compatibility settings to XP, 98, 95, and/or run as admin.

Thanks Polix, and LC for your efforts too. Nice to know it's backed up somewhere.

So I need to download the whole of SSDL (2.5 gb) just to get one file? Any idea which of those 5 massive downloads has the one file I want in it?

I wish I was experienced with asss. Putting 17th Parallel and asss together could get messy. Anyway... the old north-south map was tried many times when the zone started to tail off, it didn't work and it made me realise the old map wasn't as good as I remember. That's because 17th Parallel was my first zone, which made it seem 10x more fun. It was the east-west map that actually oversaw the peak in 17th's population. Good luck reviving the dead Frankenstein.

So I was wondering if there is a download site anywhere? I want to download the old subspace 1.35 because it allows me to test maps in offline mode. I don't know if there's a better or quicker way to do what I want to do, but surely there is a subspace 1.35 download somewhere? All these CNET and other downloads are actually continuum.

I was thinking of quoting this as being from a "US government employee". What exactly is Aileron's title? I find this quote both maniacal and retarded. It's a sad reminder that these sort of people are still out there.

I find this topic a good way to differentiate between the left and right in politics. All the administrators and moderators for this forum take the right-wing stance. Hah, I guess some people just want power more. Figures. Oh, and for the sake of everyone here who can't be bothered to read Aileron's post (I didn't either, I saw my name and started at the bottom), here is a random comment from a lunatic:

Lol... "time of death: "

All I did in that last post is ask you to elaborate on your assumptions, to see if you have any evidence whatsoever for them. You just resorted to insults. Ah, so myself and everyone else here didn't raise our eyebrows when seeing you come out in support of the boardroom for a major corporation? Yea, that isn't right wing of you at all. Yea, it's not in your character at all, not since you've made countless rants against your own "evil" entity (the liberals), many of who just happen to have a lot of hatred for the boardroom directors you just happen to be defending right now. Yea, that wasn't expected at all. Nice to see you haven't changed. -EDIT- and lol! "You are clearly too stupid to understand the difference between BP's failure and Enron's failure."
-
Well then, I guess this is the crux of the matter. If you can tell me what the 20 levels of management are, then I'll believe this isn't another of your whimsical crusades in support of a right-wing cause. This is because I kind of agree that applying the fines 4 levels above the problem might work better, I just don't believe there are 20 levels until you reach the boardroom, so it would be nice if you could name them. Why not? It often does solve the problem. The suit can still ask the rig captain to fire an employee and it will get done. They can obviously do a lot more because other oil companies have far fewer problems than BP do. Perhaps there is an incentive that was put in place by management for rig workers to save money, and this causes them to cut corners.

Well there are plenty of grounds for RICO charges, such as: 1. The 1999 illegal disposal of toxic waste in Alaska which BP pleaded guilty to. 2. The 2005 Texas City Refinery explosion where 15 people died. BP pleaded guilty to breaking the Clean Air Act. 3. The 2006 oil leak in Alaska. 4. The 2007 manipulation of propane prices which led to a fine of 303 million dollars. The fine grew in each case, but it seems BP hasn't improved it's methods at all. When a company consistently fails to respond to a less serious form of punishment, a greater threat is perhaps needed. Also: 1. BP did lie to the government in their MMS report by saying they could deal with an accident such as this. 2. There are allegations that BP neglected safety by sending its "cement bond log" crew home early. This saved money and just happened to be on the day of the explosion. Finally, with the level of proof needed to support RICO charges, the prosecutors must have something substantial. Oh, they have the power. If they asked the BP worker who hires and fires the guys on the rig, that guy would do as he is told. What's more, they have the power to say what safety measures are used, and whether to cut costs by not using the safety measures.

Every big company has a board-room with company directors. It seems like you are assuming Obama see's this board of directors in your definition of how a liberal see's them: "as evil men smoking cubans in a shielded room". That is the only assumption here. And how can these regulations not be targetted at the company directors? The regulations are needed so that companies can be properly held accountable for mistakes like this. So you think the little guy on the rig should be held accountable? How will that ever change anything? The company directors will still endorse the same working conditions, whether mistaken or not, because they won't be blamed for anything. With the regulations being targetted at the directors they will do everything to ensure it doesn't happen again... and they're the people who can ensure that the best. They hire and fire, they can bring in new safety measures to their operation. Also, you really need to get out of your head this idea of a corporation as some mythical ethereal entity. BP has a headquarters, they have a board-room (smoke filled or not) and they have a board of directors who meet in it and dictate the future actions of the company.

Where does the 32 billion, or however much BP are paying, end up? I think a lot of ordinary people lost money through this... fisherman, businesses that rely on tourism, etc. Is the 32 billion covering compensation? Is some for the US government for the cost of clear-up? The top guy getting fired was a joke. I would guarantee you that he offered to get axed. It's a way to scapegoat the company and he walks away with a £600,000 a year pension.... that's about a million dollars per year. He was never fired, it was all agreed beforehand that he would go. In a couple of years he'll be CEO of Marks & Spencers or British Telecom lol.
