  1. Lifted this from MGB, apparently, he didn't thought it's funny since he threw it in the garbage. I don't play trench, I think it's a noob zone. But this subbed crap made me laugh (it's from the old xbox commercial).
  2. Short simple answer: No.
  3. Cloaking masks you on-screen. Ghosting randomly spawns fake decoys around you, making it hard to target the real you.
  4. While Jeff has 'moved on', nigh a decade ago at that, Rod is well aware of what SubSpace is.
  5. SubSpace's History is well known to quite a few. The person who knows everything about the code of SubSpace is Jeff Petersen. The person who knows everything about the code of Continuum is Priit Kasesalu. The company which funded and published SubSpace's development, Virgin Interactive Entertainment (VIE, the North-American division), no longer exists. Jeff Petersen is currently employed by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and provide programming expertise on backend networking, protocol and security. He is not involved with SubSpace in any form or manner since his last post to the, now defunct, SubSpaceHQ forums circa Y2K. The most experienced people would be Priit and Snrrrb, possibly Grelminar and perhaps CatID. Your attempt at being funny is greatly lacking in effort.
  6. Why in the world would they ask for $1000 to host a free game? I think they're hosting other stuff for much less if at all... At any rate...can I have your $1000? I want to buy some items in a game's item shop. For that much, I'll become uber strong.

He asked. I answered. I cannot imbue conscience onto him, but I can explain why what he's doing is perceived by society as wrong.
  8. FilePlanet is really good for having massive exposure. A guy uploaded Armada Online there once, and for some reason they featured it at the front page, and on that week the server was booming with newbies.
  9. Shit video, awesome music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fss6tjkVTCU

Because you are knowingly and willingly assist a rip-off and then divert any responsibility claiming to partake no part in it. This is about as immoral as unethical gets. I'd really love to have Hoch down here and explain it from his side of the practice. I don't know how the US Law works, but here we have an article called "(Acting) In Good Faith" and once you breach it, you're owing damages. That is to say that intentionally giving someone a poor deal or one that bust in their face well knowing it's what's going to happen will land you guilty as charged in any lawsuit. If you are footing the advertising/exposure bill, it is one thing. For another to do so, while the product is offered freely as is, would be downright jackassery.

Same limitations as ever, I believe. So long no one is making a profit out of their ©s without their consent (cut) then no problem whatever we do. That's, IIRC, how the verbal agreement between their heads and Priit was communicated. We could probably allow them to exploit the built-in Ad Banner thing/LVZs, or put some banners on our community websites. This will be in return for their hosting costs and whatever further (dev team?) support they were willing to invest onto. Probably, but what a rush/ride it'll be, huh? XD
  12. I think you've completely misunderstand what you've read. Your boat gone off stream and shipwrecked.

Lynx, like I told the other guy, if you're okay with scamming people for personal gain (whichever it may be in whatever form it may be) then you are that. This is the source, reason and logic for my opinion. I believe you'd find that it is one that is shared by a vast majority of, both the intellectual and least-intellectual, population. Vegita, this is really all old news. They also had an attempt with Altnet to use that Silverplatter (formerly Horizon) company's Alloy (formerly DEx) peer2peer technology, making a Subspace clone over peering as proof of concept. Supposedly they were to showcase it in some industry event. Now the Rapidshare thing is a new one to me. Certainly, they may have wanted control and it seems like it, but I think that overall they could've been the resource-giant we've been lacking all along. Shrug. Hey, Polix, can I get that guy's email? Maybe he could help me realize my Uber-SS/INF cross MMO dream design. XD Aside the glaring type'Oh, he's also made a huge mistake. Infantry/Cosmic Rift aren't operated by Sony, per-sa, they're operated by SOE which is a, rather small comparatively, division within a division that is within (or was at the time) Sony's Motion Picture division. They also haven't allocated the games any significant resources, so you can't say they've done much for it. Rapidshare could've easily advertised SS up the wahzoo. Seems like a loss. Mais, meh... Wow...so much retarded bollocks inside that thread...this is bad comedy. Oh, and ultimately, anyway, they wouldn't have gone through with it even if we agreed to it because BDE wants a six figure (no...that's not 100k, you're missing a zero there) and no way rapidshare-guy would've paid that much. Heck, I doubt he'd have paid more than a couple thousands at best, he probably thought he could get it for that low a sum, too).

"Lynx, thank you for a refreshing voice of reason here." HAH! More like for being a like-minded scoundrel. The end justifies the means, right? sigh. ::shakes head:: Those who abide by the letter of the law yet do not respect the spirit of the law disgrace both and fulfill none.
  16. No, sama, it won't be illegal. Because, continuum in itself, in the end, is illegal. The agreement, as I said before, was that so long the game is free BDE won't intervene with us/continuum (because they don't want someone making money on something they own, at least not without getting their due cut). And that's the reason behind the, laughable, continuum TOS. Because if someone was trying to sell continuum (presumably without BDE's approval) then BDE would've stepped in and enforced legally the shutdown of all SubSpace. Since they're willing participants in this (assumably, they've not been given all the details yet, but they probably will approve) then any seemingly legal barrier is moot. Bottom line, it is ethically and morally wrong. But, legally, if Turbo want to go ahead with this then he can go right ahead. BDE gave him a green light (why wouldn't they? they have potential to make money while doing NOTHING) and they're the legal owners and thus the ones allowed to approve or deny this venture. I say it'll just bring harm at worst, or do no good to improve at best. Times will tell. There's nothing more to discuss here. Except this: if this backfires, turbo, expect a witch hunt, and the main staking event will be you.

I agree wholeheartedly. What needs to be done is to can all the dumbass sysops, take their zones over, and start organizing this community as a WHOLE instead of fragmented zone communities. Also, arrange the dev community up and keep things evolving. Subspace is stepping in its place never going anywhere. Lack of evolution is killing this game no less than any other factor. That which does not adapt - perish. I've posted quite a few ideas back in the day. But, GS never wanted to play Dictator, which sadly we kind of need that. So, it'll never go anywhere. HAHA. Live and enjoy it while it lasts. Your idea may get a small surge of players, but then it'll also just as quickly die out. Yes, I've seen it happening before, several times. By the by, Lynx, I've been an unofficial staff on one of the Halo reincarnations and during my short period there - I'd like to take credit for making adjustments to the zone which doubled the population. XD
  18. They'll host anything so long you own the rights and can permit them legally to host it and so long they're allowed to CHARGE for it (and so long it doesn't get them in trouble with their data center, AKA no Pornography or things which violate the DMCA). You haven't. The people who already play this for free won't go to pay $5 to download it again. Show me that market - those people who haven't yet to know this game and will pay $5 to download it. Then prove it. Get Gamersgate to give you NUMBERS. Find games which are similar to SubSpace, old, dated graphics, MMO, generally free. And ask for gamersgate's numbers on these games's conversion rates. Go ask the games for their side of the story and if gamersgate are really effective. THAT is how you do your HOMEWORK RESEARCH. THAT is how you PROVE things (especially when talking with VCs, loan bankers, et cetera conducting business). Ah, finally, the cat is out of the sack. So now we know the truth, the real reason here and your own vested interest. SubSpace isn't about YOUR zone or YOUR squad making to YOUR ZONE's league games. This isn't about YOUR needs. Join the club. Mine ended circa Y2K (Inet's SVS zones dying). Burst right ahead. None's stopping you. Bottling up anger will only give you indigestion. Venting is better for your health. You're not the only one who put energy and effort (or even money) onto this game to have it all sput right back in their face. Again, Join the Club, '98 veteran here (VIE shutdown, and many many more times thereafter).
  19. Mecbot finally pulled the plug?
  20. IF they could charge for it? Did they not just explicitly said that they would not host non-charged-for content? Since when there is an alternative? Shouldn't being on their catalog be a default happening? I wonder how ever middlemen make their brokerage/finder's fees applicable... How about ever showing yourself present on any medium aside this one small venture interest? Welcome aboard, Newblet. I call it as I see it. If I see Mushroom, I say "mushroom". If I see Badger, I say "Badger". If I see Snake... Help ME? Now that's a hoot. I thought you're supposed to help SUBSPACE. Please, elaborate. In great detail. I wish to know just how are you helping ME?

Wiki(Shitty)pedia scare tactics don't work here, sonny boy. Calling me a troll gains you no points and won't get my account banned. Try again. They're used to pay money for fully developed quality games that aren't being offered for free otherwise. How many people in this world you know don't mind being charged for something that is freely offered otherwise? It is pretty much HUMAN NATURE (as been proven by many lawsuits, may I add) that to find out you've been ripped off will cause you to get all riled up. "Excellent game" is a matter of personal perspective. In REALITY, which you are so fond of, SubSpace is an over-ten-years OUTDATED game with POOR graphics. It is easily, by first impression, outclassed by many games offered out there today, whether pay or free. If it was that easy for SubSpace to compete, it would've had already done better. Even Infantry, which may be considered as the next-generation of Subspace, which has the 'back' (if one may call it that without snorting milk out of their nose) of Sony Online Entertainment is being fondled by the GrimReaper. Again, here's an idea: Pay them an upfront of $500 for the first 100 customers. I'd like to see a scan of the receipt. PDF format if possible, please. Or, a better idea: Since you keep saying how you donate and how you don't mind to support financially, and how all this seems just alright to you, how about you goto Penny Arcade and such sites and PAY them to ADVERTISE proper our game (I think this HAS been done before), or pay google to have them turn up a download link at the top of any "subspace" search terms, featuring the caption for link "Best Free Online Game". This way, FUTURE PLAYERS aren't burnt for nothing in their pockets. No. You are scumbag for wanting to RIP OFF future potential users AND being OKAY with it for your own gain (be it dollars or players). Argue it for all you wish, any Judge and any person with ethics and morals as their wayward will rule you guilty outright. They prospered because they had ENOUGH (hundreds) players to 'tolerate' the BANNINGS of some by abusive staff. There were enough people, with enough friends, who kept showing up to have fun with their friends. By contrast, many other zones with SMALLER population (30-40 players) did not last due to abusive staff. And with the continued dwindling of population, the rest will soon join shalt they continue their corrupted way.

An incorrect cliche. In particular, for a game that is publicized and has its name spread by word of mouth and 'friend brings friend' type of, such a scheme will bring harm and very bad publicity. And once SubSpace is tagged as "scam", then no one will touch it or go near to it. People who see it in portals will veer away. After a public opinion is formed (which happens very quickly in our current Hi-Speed Internet-Era reality) it is nigh impossible to alter it. Suffice that SubSpace is tagged negatively once, and another learns of it, then the snowball commence rolling and that'll truly be the end. This community had years to do something about it. Their ineptitude to put aside their egos and differences is what's preventing it (that, and fact we're very old tech competing in next-next-next gen releases environment). And it is still up to the community to do something to turn the tide (if that's even possible), but it'll still require collaboration and having it 'done right'. Bringing players who will just quit and then bad mouth us, is NOT the way.

Facts: He has repeatedly and strongly pushed for this one deal with this one specific portal. He has made it known that for him it is all business and that is what's important, to him. His plan offers high probability to bite SubSpace in the ass than do any good. He uses words such as volunteer and rip-off, not knowing seemingly their meaning. He cites illegal activity to provide support for his perspective and in general display a behaviour/attitude akin to that of a scam-handling scheming snake. How much is it assumption of me to deduce this individual is up to no good? Post Scriptum For future reference, kindly avoid quoting entire walls of text merely to utter a couple of sentences as reply. You may do so with a summary of relevant bits as well, taking up much less obsolete space on the screen/forum.
  24. His plans has no merits at all. Notice, he has not even yet attempted at all to talk with other game portals, or at least bring forth any findings/conversations he had with them if he had indeed. This is all about just this one scam portal, which is going to charge FUTURE SS PLAYERS (who'll just become hella pissed for it and make us all look really very bad), possibly giving BDE a cut, and maybe even he's standing to gain something from it (he's sure pushing hard for it, does he not? And the way he talk, makes it obvious that he has no qualms about exploiting SubSpace to make a buck and that business is all he cares for). There is no guarantee for the sort of supposed population inflation this can bring. There IS guarantee that this will make whoever comes from there hella pissed when they find out this game's for free and that they paid $5 for basically thin-air. This is the first he's even posting or made himself known to the community et al, making some grande proclamations about who he is/was or something or another. Can anyone vouch for him to exist prior to yesterday? I smell some slicky slippery used-car-salesperson weasel who might have been playing SS for a little while and saw opportunity for profit. Polix, I implore you, remove this individual from access to this website and alert the council of him.

If it quaks like a duck... BDE are NOT giving us more players. This scam-portal is NOT giving us more players. There is no guarantee to that. It IS guaranteed that anyone coming through there, paying $5 for the client download, then finding out it's FREE, is going to bust nuts and slander this game and its community to kingdom come giving us far more harm than any good this could ever do. Being made available at cost? You mean MADE AVAILABLE FOR A FEE TO THE DOWNLOADER/POTENTIAL FUTURE PLAYER, not to YOU, not to US, not to BDE. TO THE PLAYER. Who wants to play a game that is available FOR FREE. No. This is not. But for you, mr. "business man", mr. "I'm looking to make a quick profit on back of poor suckers I can easily scam and then send crying home", it sure seems to be the case. The only discussion here is why a scumbag like you is even permitted to speak such vile filth and attain some sort of sponsorship/support from rest of the community. The only discussion here is how Subspace can be pushed forward, in a POSITIVE manner. Not by SCAMMING THE PLAYERS FOR YOUR POCKET"S PROFIT.
