God, possibly. So, what's everyone doing nowadays? I think the days for bring 17th back are long gone - there are still a few who check in with SS/Continuum in general, and this forum once in a blue moon, but we'd never get more than a handful online. Maybe we can find each other on Steam/XB Live/PSN, though, and play other games together? If you ever see Audigex around in the gaming world, that's probably me.

Programming is no fun in Python anyway - if there are no pointers to cock up, there's nowhere to waste 10 hours a week hunting that missing dereference.
-
Is this going anywhere? As always with Continuum nowadays I'm going with the "I'll believe it when I see it" theme, but it sounds like it could be fun to play with a dozen people - as long as you don't add too much scope too early. It's the sort of idea you could kill by giving the early adopters too much to do and making it into basically a single player where you see someone else every 100 hours.
-
There's still a fair few of us who check in occasionally - I probably appear every couple of months... but I was wondering how often we all turn up. Once in a while someone tries to get the zone going with an event, but oftentimes by the time I've seen it the date's been and gone. However if they make the date too long, we end up with the first people forgetting. Drop a quick post in here every time you come on, if you can be arsed, and we can see who drops in to take a look but doesn't have anything to post on. So yeah, obviously I'm here...

I was never in Pie Squad or even 4U In fact, I can't remember what squads I was in, anyone remember any other names?

I know, you flinched when you saw the word "settings" in the 17th forum. The topic has been discussed to death, repeatedly. This topic is a 4-times reincarnated hindu zombie cat. Well, sorry, I've performed a little CPR on the 9th life, and it's still with us for at least the duration of this post. However I noticed that, and it may not have been the only factor, when we had the last population spike - ie enough to have pub running for a few hours a night, the old settings were in place. Once the new settings were re-instated, the population vanished. Could it be that the old settings are more fun for low pub numbers? Is that because there are a couple of fast-kill options - namely the weasel, which is hours of fun. How about doubling the damage (/halving energy and recharge rates) on the old settings and putting them in place for a while? It's worth a go, right?
-
Have you ever noticed that... If you leave the spider on multi-fire and hold control, the "low energy" firing rythm fits perfectly with the beat to "drops of jupiter" by train? No, I didn't think you had :-)
-
We had a population for about a week, happening a week or two ago with the "old" setts which then faded out as the new setts came into play. Now, read into that what you like, it may have been to do with the setting change: Alternatively it may be that the first couple of days were 2-4 pop, the 3 days after were up to 16, then the few days after were down to 8,5,3 and 0 again. So yeah, whether it was the settings or just that people had a fun couple of days but couldn't all be on at similar times again, I don't know. One thing we've learned during 17ths coma-period is that there's plenty of people who will play if they see a pop, but most won't bother unless there's 3/4 in the zone already.
-
Moi, but I appear to be the only one around. What happened to the 10-15 pop in the evenings we had last week?
-
We've had an unusually large amount of activity in the last few days. Averages of 5-6 playing in pub, with a max zone pop of about 16-18. It tends to be occuring between about 4pm-2am GMT (11am-9pm EST) if anyone wants a few hours of 17th, hoping that it lasts for a few more days. (Well, hoping it lasts for a few years)

The emphasis in the past always seemed to be related to fixing the old site, rather than making a new one. Good job ste :-)

Wait, you think it wouldn't work on Vista basic because it's a little simpler? This thing worked on 98/ME at the very least, and most likely 95 for all I remember, surely any modern OS should be able to handle it? The fact it opens the game suggests it's fine apart from the connection; which the OS variety doesn't have a huge amount to do with. Most vista versions use the same basic networking system, just enterprise and ultimate get a few more frills. I'd point the finger at your hardware, either some interference on your wireless or the router complaining, or a firewall/antivirus etc. -
Ours is very un-restricted. They're running a trial this year where you can run literally almost anything, they just refuse to support anything other than windows+mac PCs, and have told us that if the police come calling they'll tell them who was downloading. Torrents, games, XBOX live/ps3/wii, skype, apache servers (although not allowed, do work)... I've yet to find anything that won't work so far. The problem for CTM is that it uses different ports for each zone, so I guess a couple must just catch the few ranges that are blocked. Some are reserved for internal useage such as email etc. 100/60 (down/up) Mbit/sec connection, lots of fun :-)
-
Ah yeah, I'd forgotten about that. Think I was thinking of the TW weasel of old. And yeah, 2002-3 was the time I started playing SS, so my knowledge of the sets is from that time and later. Still - the 2003 setts were better :-)
-
I'll try adding some: but the zones list is only half the problem. The main problem is the attached screenshot to the first post: I can see a zone being online, but when I connect I get a hang, then that message. This happens even after wiping the entire zone list and adding again. Is that something to do with a port being blocked? 5005 and 3600 are the two in question, although I haven't thoroughly checked.
-
I think this is probably a firewall issue, but being behind a university hardware firewall I'm hoping it isn't. Essentially a few zones (Hyperspace, DSB are the two I can remember) don't work. They hang for a while then show the attached error. Also, downloading new zones list doesn't work... Anything I can do, or just something to be put up with? Edit: Wrong attachment

The settings seem to be a mishmash of 17th in the 3 years before closure, and the time before that. Eg WB lv3 bullets: they were lv2 for just about as long as I can remember. As were levs with lv1 instead of current lv3. Spiders had 2 bursts, not 3. Walls were about double the size Terr I think had lv1 bombs, not lv2, and I'm pretty sure they didn't have stealth Spider had lv2 bullets with some spread, not as much as sharks, instead of lv1s. Lanc's bullets are all messed up. Multifire was a triple shot with a little spread. The weasel is pretty much ALL wrong. It was never the best at turning, but I didn't think it was that bad? And it's not the same size etc. I've probably missed some about energy, recharge rates etc

To update, this can't happen Unfortunately the uni a) Won't allow me to connect more than one machine at a time (and they seem to have it quite watertight, need to play with the NAT sometime) and Specifically forbid me from hosting any sort of server/allowing any sort of incoming connection etc.... which I'm sure they'll interperet to include bots Was worth a go though

That's why I went for 8pm GMT - it's reasonable for america aswell as europe. (Europe would mostly be around 9-11PM, america around 12-3PM as far as I can work out?) Any aussies, get up at 8am and then get to work in your penal colonies. btw audi(nohspam)gex(at)(the letter gee)mail(dot)com is my MSN (obviously remove nohspam ad spaces, and the other bits need turning into their respective words). If anyone wants to add me... MSN might be the easy way to shout at each other to get online

Fair enough. He still hosts my website (well, larry's now - the thieving git's robbed my larrythehamster name AND my website!), I wondered if it's the same server. It can't be that hard to find somewhere to stick an old box attached to somene's ethernet. I'm wondering about asking round some open source projects etc.
-
I can't find any way to make an exception. And fair enough, I guessed it was legit (I've used CTM long enough to trust it by now) - I was just more concerned that it was stopping people playing. Edit: Found a way to add it to "trusted processes" - if I don't edit this again, I've got it working Edit2: Nope, still crashing - btw that error is the quarantine. The actual error is even more grouchy...

Download Threatfire - it's an antivirus software. When running continuum its fine, but when I try to go out o spectate, it tells me there's a virus in continuum.exe Obviously there isn't (or someone would long since have been in my bank details) but this is clearly an issue Edit: Image looks wierd resized - it works fine fullsize though - click it

How about an attempt to get 17th active, without actually trying? From now on whenever any of my computers are online, I will be sat in 17th pub - regardless of whether anyone else is there. Now, if everyone did this, surely some people will overlap. And if 5 people happen to overlap... suddenly we have a pub. Well, it's worth a go eh?

I need to find out what my uni's policy on "fair usage" is. If they let me put two or more machines on at once, and leave them on, I'll get a small box set up for some bots. It's a bit of an "if" - but we can try What happened to nurples hosting them anyway?
