Hi,

I'm currently writing a dissertation on online communities and picked subspace to serve as the subject of a case study. Since I've invested God knows how many hours in this game it seemed like an obvious choice. However, writing a decent 2 page history of Subspace (to be incorporated in a larger paper) with barely any sources is not too easy. I'd like to ask if there is anyone here who is oldskool enough to provide me with some much needed eye witness accounts of the period between 1995 and 2002. For some reason all the Subspace related forums don't go farther back than roughly 2002. (In case you know of one that does please be so kind to tell me) I intend to put a draft version on these forums as soon as I finish, for the purpose of peer review. Please help me!

Thanks. I already found the Epinephrine web page. A large part of it is based on other people's account of the events however, so I'm not sure how much of it I can actually use. I've been digging around on the ssdownloads page for a bit already, and it does have some good material. Wikipedia is (as always:)) of no use. Still, someone that could actually tell me everything or at least answer some of my questions would be very very useful.

Two pages should be easy, the only problem is gonna be sources, if your teacher wants them. Because of the nature of the game... the best sources, the only real sources, are going to come straight from the players. PriitK, GS, JeffP... those are probably the only acceptable sources as far as a research institution like a college is concerned. All history comes from people, the only time you can use a book or internet source is if that book or internet article was written by someone who is reputable. You kind of have an advantage in that you can speak directly to those involved, except, they probably won't actually listen to you. The only other things you could do would be to find archived websites or something from zones, which would prove that they were around at the time the website was, but that's about it. Continuum's history is basically already lost, even the people who should know what happened, don't. At least, their stories conflict. So you're kinda screwed. Should be easy to write, though.

Someone should write a novel about Subspace.

Not without its history put to paper first :o I just found out that the Internet Archive (www.archive.org) has quite a lot of antique Subspace websites archived. Their "snapshots" of the old VIE Subspace website are far more complete than the subspace.legendzones.com mirror. The VIE boards from '97 :

Neg is short for negative. My understanding is that originally in the VIE zones you started off with an actual negative bounty. Killing a person with a negative bounty would be a "neg kill" and a person who did this on a regular basis would be called a "neg killer"

The Term Neg i believe came from zones that required Greening (SVS) zones in order to upgrade your ship. When you had a upgraded ship and you picked on someone that just entered or recently killed without them having the opportunity to upgrade was called that.

Holy crap going to that site i seen a ton of names i havent seen in years/forgot about.

Hmm, then the only other thing I can recommend is my own two posts here and here, which basically explains what happened to SubSpace and who owns the rights to it. Is there anything specific you're looking for? Maybe the ssfwiki or ASSS wiki can help. But otherwise, the wayback machine does miracles (e.g. subspace.net or sscentral.com)

After another marathon of digging through archived web forums: The earliest mention I can find of Continuum being in the works dates from october 2000, this is a few weeks before beta testing started but obviously the programming started far earlier. Does anyone have a clue when it did?

You know server advancements (mostly billing ala BanG) and bots came before Continuum. Continuum's development was a little before October but it's safe to say around the end of 2000.

From the TW history:

He even had on his staff Catid, a player who would later become famous for his continuous exploits in releasing critical Subspace server code to the public and for attempting endlessly to hack into servers all over Subspace.

Wow, TW hated him huh? Although he did his share of hacking, he also released the first freely available bot, which sparked advancement for all the smaller zones that weren't lucky enough to have access to TWBot and Powerbot.

The code they are speaking about was released to the proper people so a fix could be made. Had it been somone with real ill will toward the community it would have destroyed it Now the issue is fixed and we are protected from someone else stumbling uppon it and really hurting the community Whether this way of thinking is right or wrong from a person that witnessed the events that happened i know it could have been ALOT worse.
