Sharpflame, a person who doesn't know that you can't ?give ships isn't stupid, they are uninformed. You're basically saying "It's ok to scam noobs who don't know any better". If you're not going to take action against those who are trying to scam the newbs, then you are basically saying that mods are only there to protect the vets from being annoyed and har!@#$%^&*ed, but who cares about the uninitiated noob who doesn't even know yet that you can't ?give ships. I mean really, when you see a scammer scamming, how hard is it to send a warning? don't be a lazy mod or you might find others knocking on the door to take your place.

Even with open source, can't you have some sort of method to only allow the latest official versions of the client? (like code signing or something.. not sure exactly what it's called) If you could garuntee a player was using an unmodified client, then you wouldn't have to hunt down every last rabbit hole that a cheat could be hiding in by modifying the code. Actually, you still need checks because of memory hacks and such, but I think if you start out with verifying the version of the client, then you defeat blatent source-code changes.

If you don't want people to have to update their zone list every time your IP changes then you can setup dynamic DNS with dyndns.org (It's free). You pick a hostname, download the software app that keeps your IP updated. and then put ss://hostname.whatever.com in the description of your zone. (Look at my zone, SS Scrabble). This makes it easier for people to consistently get to your zone even when the IP changes - they won't have to refresh the zone list.

In addition, since you're considering opening up the delivery of ?message to the user's email address then you'll either need to send a verification email or perhaps limit the number of changes to changes per day(s). Otherwise spammers could keep changing their own address in order to send out spam.

There are webcam programs out there that can stream your program windows too. I think there's one called webcammax. The best one is supposedly camtwist, but it's MAC only (and I don't think there is a MAC SS client, is there?)

K, I'll connect up to Accede either tonight or some night this week. I don't expect to ever have tons of population (er... right now only 4 people can play scrabble at one time)... but my zone will normally have two bots in it at all times so that people can jump in to play whenever they want.

Hey cypher. I'm developing a small little zone for scrabble fans (because all the existing scrabble arenas in subspace are poor and neglected). I'm currently running my own biller, but I was thinking about switching over to accede on a permanent basis, but I was wondering what the uptime on the biller is at this stage in developement? The only thing that would stop be from joining accede is if it would affect the ability of people to log into my zone. (I'm running subgame at the moment) Additionally, are there any other considerations I should make before connecting to Accede?

I think I ran into the same problem today. I tried to log in with one of my other aliases. It said the password was incorrect. I tried a few different passwords it might have been.... now it's say the server is busy and I can't even go back to my original alias that I was just logged in with.... I think that means my IP has been temp banned from SSC for login spams..... great.... I guess I learned my lesson.... make sure you absolutely know your passwords before you try to log in..... I think the chatnut makes it easier to get IP banned from SSC because you can rapid fire logins and the big boys up at SSC don't like that... This isn't really a complaint about chatnut OR ssc.... more of a warning/tip for anyone who uses chatnut because it doesn't store your profiles/passwords.

Wouldn't you have to have SSC support to turn a zone into a sub-biller? In essence it would be giving SSC less control over which zones get connected to the billing server. Would they be able to handle that? And... At any point SSC could turn off the juice so to speak and shutdown the zone/sub-biller. What do you do then?

I just hate saying ASSS in my head. I really like your zone Dr. Brain and the no cursing makes it great, but why did someone develope a server acronym that sounds like a curse word? I just prefer to say ASSS cause I'm not the cursing type. If that makes me a newb... then newb I shall be. I'm fine with that. I'll let my actions speak for me. As far as I know the purpose of language is to communicate and therefore if you know what I'm talking about when I say ASSS then it's enough for me.

I like the idea of being able to check when antideath will trigger. But here's another idea (potentially in addition to): why not have a lvz object (player screen, not map) which indicates that they have antideath available. When it's used, it turns off. When it's charged, it turns on. Doesn't have to be a big flashy graphic, it could be on the left side above or below special weapons. Something small and non-distracting. I'm guessing there's something fundamentally wrong with this idea. I haven't seen any screen lvz objects (as opposed to map lvz objects) in hyperspace, so I'm guessing there's some issue or bug or problem caused by them? Anyways, if that's the case, then I'm all for what everyone has been talking about with a command to check the time left.
