If you guys are having trouble with getting the encryption for the game maybe one of you can use IDA Pro with the Hexrays add on to disassemble then reconstruct the c code to get the encryption code. This is pretty much the software crackers use and it's quite good.

Is SSGN.net a good domain for the community?
freaknigh replied to PoLiX's topic in General Discussion
actually google doesn't always pick up the contents of a site very well but if the word you are searching for is in the domain name it'll always put it at the top. Either way you'll have people looking for subspace who wont look for continuum and vice versa. The problem these days is not name of the game or if it has a proper tutorial etc, it is simply that there are just too many games out there. Even with a price tag of free most games have to fight to get a few players... Is the idea of a top down space shooter dead? Hell no. But it's been 14 years or whatever... Subspace has acquired some competition and developers need to step up and meet that competition. Also things are a lot more advertising oriented. If your not making front page of a game listing site that gamers trust to find new games then how the hell do you expect them to find you? It's just a sad simple truth for a lot of old games... You got to have a good fun addictive stable game with a lot of replay value that can get on at least some of the game news sites and can compete with competitors in its genre. -
Why don't you just get a $20/mo vps from www.linode.com You'll get full control over a professional linux machine host with a super fast connection and plenty of ram/cpu/hd. All you need to do is take an hour or two out of playing the game to go mow someone's lawn and you got the money to cover the server cost for the month.

Goldstein is dead? What are we going to hate during the two minute hate now? They rushed at full speed to take the body and bury it at sea. The whole thing is a lie. If there is any argument to be had it's how much of this crap is true and what's the gains for who.

Has the noob really become so stupid they can't hold 2 words in their head at once?

Continuum is a terrible name thats why we don't use it. It's like calling your game "version 2". I think if Continuum had glaring differences from subspace then it'd be called continuum, but if it does a perfect job of looking like subspace, then its called subspace. The game is subspace, the client is continuum. No more then you can play it on windows or linux.

The problem is even though more zones spreads out the player base, it keeps more players over all in the player base. A lot of those players are here because they get to run their own zones, get to moderate in those zones, or simply support player made zones. It is better to have this kind of freedom and then make your zone that much better then the rest vs to have only your zone available. I think the game needs to go open source and then get feature crawled. People need to look at what the market for games like this are now-a-days and come up with a gameplan to meet that competition. Subspace when I first started playing is what you got in the genre (it was pretty much all you got for space genre at all). I only hear solutions that are within the bounds of the engine and it kind of sounds like cannibalism. Just like there is zone creation freedom I think it is time also for coding / feature freedom and the ability for zone owners to make modified clients just for their zone if they have to.

Well just having a unique key is only a simple approach, you can just swap entirely the whole encryption code so that for that client / server it is an entirely unique encryption method. Another solution is make it so you have to pay $1 for the server to allow you to play normally and you'll say bye bye to all the hackers who aren't willing to lose their paid for account.

The solution to that is very simple. Each server will have its own encryption key and a client will be compiled with that key as well. The only client that will connect to that server is the one that was precompiled for it. Otherwise it is dependent on how much of the game is regulated in the server or the client, if the server can regulate 100% of the gameplay then it doesn't matter if the client is open source. If that requires a change in the protocol of the game then that should be fine just make a matching open source server to go with it. If you can't regulate the gameplay 100% then you should be able to stick in a lot of checks depending on what kinds of cheats are still possible to see if a player is likely cheating and then temporarily suspend them and let a mod review them to see if they can put cheat check ignores on them.

I actually just finished cloning two classic games of this era, Z and Diaspora. So I decided to stop by to see what the state of this game was and if it was something I should clone as well. All I can say is subspace is actually a very simple game for someone who has refined coding skills, it would take me no time to clone if I knew the protocol and had all the graphics set aside. The thing that is worrying me though is I'm noticing all games of this era are dieing and each game's community is desperately trying to keep it alive. To me personally, I think it's just the nature of software and the industry of creating games. This game is over 10 years old but it is just is playable as it was then. A game that is created now has to actually compete with games created over a decade ago and every game up to that point and vice versa. The amount of playable games out there is simply becoming over saturated. Every time I look at a new game though I think that it is cool as hell but I could careless because the games of my era are all I need. I would rather see games like this be expanded upon instead of being remade new. Firstly at this point the whole game needs to be open source if it wants to have a chance moving on in its classic state. Otherwise, to move on and bring in new players etc, I'd say it is going to have to be something like Brady is talking about and that is a subspace like game that is modernized and commercial (of course still having the base elements such as making bots and running your own server etc). Here are my other projects though... The Zod Engine (the Z remake) Project Diaspora (the Diaspora remake) But looking at it all, I think the only games that really keep on are the ones who keep making new releases of themselves to keep up with hardware capabilities etc. Maybe if the game was made fully open source, and then the mechanics were kept the same but the 2d models were replaced with 3d models that would help?

ha ya sos might remember me... someone tell sos i need to get back ahold of him ! ... freaknigh@hotmail.com / icq:2895872 uh the chat was working decently fine for me but i also am useing the most up to date client... i updated the windows download so maybe that fixes it. and ya it's still a pretty demanding client, it used to be alot worse though lol... so long as the majority of the players play it fine then i have to attend other aspects of the game and leave making it more efficient till later sadly.

Howdy, just wanted to let everyone know about the game i've been working on called Raj Horizon. It's under rapid development, new clients coming out daily. It is heavily influenced by subspace so.... Check it out, and if you don't like it check up on it because within a week whatever you didn't like might be fixed... There is also a linux client for this game. www.nighsoft.net and a screen shot of it... http://www.nighsoft.net/files/shot8.gif
