  1. In the header: " Subspace has been running since 1997. Frienships have come and gone over the years with our unique social chat system which takes multi player gaming to an entirely new level. Find out why are motto is "Meet people from all over the world... then kill them!"" Shouldn't that be 'Find out why OUR motto' ?
  2. Inexperienced programmers cost a lot of time because they screw up (well, more than experienced programmers), don't take things in account that should have been and everyone knows it's the price tag * 100 once the software is in production to fix things that shouldn't have to be fixed. (I remember screwing stuff up when I started that made me lose a lot of time afterwards) There's only 1 colleague that has a bachelor degree informatics at work, and while they have a few more years of working 'experience', they don't even come close to my level of technical insight. Don't get me wrong, they get the job done and it will work 90% of the time. It's the 10% that I am worried about (having to fix a database by reading the last 30 days of backup because data was getting partially overwritten with defaults each day is not fun, I can assure you that). The degree isn't all that important, it's how much time they've spend programming. Those who have developed a lot as a hobby have a significant advantage to those who haven't (especially if they don't have a degree). Can't say anything about how much a programmer costs, I know how much a developer costs here but in the US too different with taxes and such. The only reason (big) companies hire them straight from university is that they're cheap and they have an internal course available to make sure they at least know a bit what they're doing. They won't go straight to development without supervised testing and such. I couldn't think of anyone who would hire a freelancer without experience in the field, say to them "make this, here's the money you get and finish it by that date". Edit: damn u page 2 that I didn't see making my reply near obsolete
  3. Pppppppprobably some of you have heard of the otomata thing, which generates procedural music using cellular automata rules, located here: http://www.earslap.com/projectslab/otomata I took a challenge for myself to duplicate the entire thing in C# under an hour, but failed (took 4 hours for the basic stuff). Anyway, I kind of threw in everything that I could think of afterwards. It's pretty fun to play around with You can find it here: http://proceduralmidi.codeplex.com/ (entire source code is available and documented) I even made a screen cap huzzah: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVgDxZQ8hYc
  4. Wobit has PMed me with a bug: I don't have vb6 installed and I'm pretty sure I have a very outdated version, so I'm hoping Samapico can fix this
  5. Should I feel violated ? That is exactly the reason why you don't put your forum name in a project's name
  6. I've used TinyXP before but I hit one wall after another. Things not working like they should, unable to run programs, not being able to install .NET framework, thus meaning not being able to run any .NET applications, etc. is unacceptable. Well I installed .NET framework just fine on my TINY XP machine, in fact its still there. You can't do much without it, so I wouldn't have used the OS if that was the case. And everything works for me. Ah interesting, I might have used an older version then. Hmmm this could be handy to set up in a virtual machine I second this, even when logged in as domain administrator I didn't have rights to change permissions of a file (in this case a shortcut on the public desktop) because the owner was the local administrator of the terminal server (and this difference took me a long to realize).

Things not working like they should, unable to run programs, not being able to install .NET framework, thus meaning not being able to run any .NET applications, etc. is unacceptable. Why would anyone use the hidden admin in windows 7 ? You could just give yourself admin rights. Being an admin however doesn't mean that you have elevated rights at all time, UAC will ask you if you want to grant a program elevated rights or not, even for windows explorer. This system is much more like it is used in linux (and it's much more secure). In XP admin meant being able to do everything, in Vista and 7 admin means being able to grant yourself the rights to do something that requires elevated permissions.
  8. My laptop runs smoother in windows 7 than it has in windows xp while it only has 1.5gb ram (2gb - 512mb shared with gfx card) and I never really had issues with being out of memory (though I don't really play the latest games anymore). I doubt 2gb vs 4gb will make much difference (unless you open a lot of things simultaneously that all require a lot of ram). Vista was/felt faster than XP, 7 is/feels faster than vista. Don't underestimate the speed of your HDD as a bottleneck, my work laptop with an 128gb SSD is 100 times faster than my laptop at home, while the rest is only slightly better (cpu, memory) in my work laptop. I don't know if disabling aero will make your computer any faster, all the window frames are using the gfx card anyway. In perfmon (start -> run -> perfmon) you can add all sort of counters (much much more detailed than looking in task manager) to see what the bottleneck is. Windows 7 also monitors any performance bottlenecks. You can find those entries in the Event Viewer under: Applications & Services logs -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Diagnostics-Performance.
  9. Haters gonna hate Birthdays gonna birthdate
  10. Isn't that a beep code for ram failure ?
  11. http://www.phoboslab.org/ztype/ I died in wave 42, final score 6384, accuracy 89.5%, it's pretty easy in the beginning but on later waves when things go faster, one mistake makes stuff overwhelming very fast. My hand hurts now
  12. integer division ?
  13. That's odd that font size influences that in such a way :/.
  14. While it's good to keep security in mind, don't try to do too much at once. Finishing features to make the client/server fully functional should take priority over the security measures to prevent hacking, otherwise the code will get messy quickly and it will be a pain to continue developing (I've been there too many times). Besides if you have a clean object oriented model it shouldn't be that hard to create an extra tier of security. Not to criticize you or anything, you're doing great
  15. I've been cloned! aaah
  16. I blame past me for not learning c# sooner and using that to write DCME (it would have been a lot more stable and a lot less hassle to maintain the code). Bad past me, bad
  17. I can relate with Aileron, I'm in a somewhat similar position. It's frustrating to see everyone that you know get together with someone and are married or are on the verge to do so while you're left behind in the dust. I think it's perfectly normal to be jealous about it too, after all, we live in a society where we HAVE to meet someone, HAVE to live together and/or get married and have kids. I agree though that it's also dependent on what kind of a person you are, me being mainly introverted who doesn't like going out to a bar or party but prefers to play an MMO with a close set of friends. If I did more of an effort to go to places to meet people I might have found someone I liked already, but that wouldn't be me and I doubt I would like the people I meet at a party anyway. Also let those feminists do their thing, they are still a minority and sooner or later they are going to crash and burn while those worked hard to build a stable relationship will swoop past their miserable life anyway. And finally /zing at the end of the clip

  19. People still used file sharing protocols ? I thought everyone moved on to torrents and/or file sharing websites
  20. Someone finish these already . I used the lancaster model render this with my raytracer (which FINALLY has spatial subdivision and instancing working) There are no textures because they are in stealth mode, not because I still have to make a .3ds file import that includes textures (and I don't know how that works in wavefront .obj), nosirreee.. *ahem*
  21. Of course the only way to 1-up this is to restart the original Metal Gear CTF on SSCC *hint* *hint*
  22. While security is certainly important (especially considering the previous issues with cheaters in subspace/continuum) as is performance of the game engine, focusing on all at once is too much to take and leads to stalled development. I've seen it before and it happened to me too. There is no need for super ultra security features when the game isn't finished, it's way too overwhelming otherwise. A sculptor doesn't carve each statue detail from a rough block but refines it until it's a rough version of what it should be, refine more, check it out again, let other people check it out and make suggestions, continue refining until it's finished. Of course it's best to keep the actual goal in mind, steering the code here and there a bit in the right direction so it's still manageable and flexible enough to be added later on.
  23. Runescape does a good job being a browser MMO while still being secure. A browser based game can be secure and isn't much different from a real application that's running (aside from running inside the browsers process). That's because once you're in the middle of development and you have a motivational dip it's really hard to continue with the same enthusiasm, especially when you have other projects/ideas lying around that you want to try out. Also developing a whole game outside of your normal work hours is really really hard, I have about ~2 hours of free time each evening on a work day, I want to spend that time relaxing and unwinding, not stay focused and think until I have to sleep. I seriously respect those who are able to pull that off, even if it's only for a month or two before development stalls. If I had the knowledge about programming back in college I wouldn't have hesitated to give it a shot at writing something, but now after a whole day of programming at work I can barely finish a proper sentence at the end of the day .
  24. Here is my code I promised, it's part of a image transform library I've been working on (it's rather slow but it does the trick faster than in batch than I can do in paint shop pro ). I've attached a screen so you'll know what to expect (as you can see the transparency in the shipset I used sucks). I've also written it using visual studio 2010 so you'll .NET 4.0 to run the binary and vs2010 to open the solution. (copying an image & ctrl+v in textbox pastes the input image btw, by lack of other way for now). And now I really need some sleep zzzzzz. ImageTransform.zip
