  1. Back in the day, there were a handful of java applets available from the official SubSpace website. subcredits: a small vertically scrolling text widget against a star field. Was seen on the official site's landing page. subships: a fun little visual banner that had the original 5 ships (warbird, javelin, spider, leviathan, and nightwasp) moving back and forth across the canvas against a star field. subhelp: ??? I've found copies of the first two applets and have even gotten them working in an old applet viewer. Eventually I plan to try porting them to javascript. However I have not been able to find any copies of the subhelp.class applet. Does anyone remember what this applet originally did and what it looked like? Given the context of originally being on the website's "Online Help" page, I assume it was some kind of visual reference guide. Furthermore, by inspecting the html of the page (courtesy of the internet archive), I can see that the applet canvas was defined to be 640x480 in size. This stands out to me because the original client's quick help screen was pretty similar in size at 626x489. So I wonder if maybe this applet was just a web version of the client's help screen? Can anyone who remembers the old SS website confirm?
  2. I think you're right. It's been ages since I've played in a zone with that going - but after looking up a bunch of screenshots, any players on screen with their crown also show as having that yellow square on the player list.
  3. The spectate.bm2 file holds graphics used in the player list stat box and most of it is pretty obvious in what it's used for... Tick mark, spectating player, attached player, and ticked variants of the previous two. But there's also a graphic in there that is of a yellow square and all combinations of the tick/spectate/attach with it. Does anyone know what that yellow square is supposed to signify? I don't recall ever seeing it on the player list.
  4. Here are some historic images: the splash screens from all of the old versions of SubSpace that were preserved on SSDL. Starting in version 125, the splash screen was replaced with the interactive GUI. v40.bmp v87-v98.bmp v107.bmp v108-v110.bmp v111-v116.bmp v117-v118.bmp v119.bmp v120-v124.bmp
  5. A blast from the past! I had forgotten I even created an account here all those years ago - but got a good chuckle from the reawakening e-mail calling me out for making "SOOO many posts (2 to be exact)". I still play SubSpace to this day and actually went though a huge burst of nostalgia earlier this year by going through all the saved game versions on the SSDL backup and even making a local backup/reconstruction of VIE's SubSpace website (I have weird hobbies).
  6. Hi Gruntster! Gosh, I feel bad saying this, but I'm struggling to remember your name...(my memory can be crap) What zones did we meet in -- was it SFSS Star Wars by chance? Unless it's mistaken identity... My SS name from the beginning was "Warrior Fenix" and I only recently switched to "Fenix.E" In any case, I'll definitely keep an eye out 'fer ya
  7. Greetings! I've been playing subspace/continuum for a long time but never really did much outside the game. Recently I got on a huge nostalgia trip and started raiding the internet for all things SS related. It's really fascinating going through all the files and websites (or their archives) and seeing the history of it all. For instance, I had heard about the Nightwasp but never knew it was the precursor to the SS shield displayed on the zone's top scoring player. That sort of stuff... Anyway I thought it would be nice to actually get involved a little in the community after all this time. So, I'd like to offer up a continuum skin I've been working on for the past few days. It's yet another recreation of the old VIE Subspace 1.34 client interface. I was really impressed and inspired by Akai's VIEd_v01 skin (with it's spinning ship graphics) that I wanted to try and recreate it for myself. I worked on it form the ground up to try and be as efficient as possible. As a result, I managed to crunch the skin file down to just under 4.5 MB. So here it is, enjoy! Comments/criticisms/flames welcome. PS: Is there any protocol for uploading files to the downloads section of the site? VIE Subspace Refit.zip
