»SOS Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 What makes you think it's not working? What is the problem you are having?
Tipme Posted December 4, 2005 Author Report Posted December 4, 2005 well, im using task manager to open up everything atm, such as my internet browser i have windows xp home edition with service pack 2
Bargeld Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 So you can't click the start button for the start menu and you have no desktop icons? btw it's Iexplorer.exe explorer.exe is always running (it's a core windows process). In versions of windows prior to win2k, if explorer.exe crashed, or was not running... then you essentially had no operating system. If explorer.exe froze, then your OS would crash. If you couldn't run it, then your pc wouldn't boot. Sounds like time for a re-install of the OS.
»SOS Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 (edited) A reinstall? Wooh, drastic measures there, barg Most likely some trojan has replaced explorer.exe and then screwed itself over and stopped working. Here's my explorer.exe, copy it to c:\Windows and give it a try.explorer.zip Edited December 5, 2005 by SOS
Bargeld Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 explorer.exe should be 'in use' and the file *shouldn't* copy. 8(
ntfx Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 Bargeld, how many topics does it take for you to figure nobody is listening to you?
»SOS Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 (edited) Rofl Anyway, if it's not running then obviously it's not in use :sos: Edited December 5, 2005 by SOS

Dav Posted December 9, 2005 Report Posted December 9, 2005 (edited) tried using system recovery to before this problem started? thats kinda what its there for also, do you have any luck in safe mode? Edited December 9, 2005 by Dav
»SOS Posted December 10, 2005 Report Posted December 10, 2005 Have you checked for viruses? F-secure has a pretty good online virus scanner. I've attached a rootkit detector as well, have a go with that, too.RootkitRevealer.zip
Bargeld Posted December 10, 2005 Report Posted December 10, 2005 if he had re-installed the OS, he woulda been done a week ago...
Tipme Posted December 10, 2005 Author Report Posted December 10, 2005 Yea, but it's such a VIGOROUS process, i thought there had to be some kind of other way....
Bargeld Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 It's just alsways been my policy... If the OS is screwed up, you normally don't 'fix' it. System restore, driver re-installs, virus scans, and ad-ware scans... sure do 'em. But when you have probs with explorer.exe or a persistant BSOD or 'illegal operations'. Then you know the OS is hosed. I just never feel confidant working on a machine with a patched up OS, and usually, you will still have little residual problems that you will have to live with. If you think about it, it broke because of something, and you still don't know what that is. OS re-installs can be annoying, but after you do it a few times, it isn't so bad.
