Sass Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 This is going to sound stupid, but as of early last night my ping rates just starting going through the roof. Most of the zones I played were at 60-70ms now are at 190-200ms. I also got over 1600 attempts by 8 hackers using trojans like Bla, Deeo Throat, and Subseven - all from the same IP (212...) which is located in the Netherlands. Does anyone have any more information about this? I spoke to another SS guy and he said he was having a similar problem. I have gone ahead and updated my system with the patch recommended by Mackieman but it's not resolving the problem. Does anyone know what caused this. Doing a little more research, I've found that IAMAPP.EXE is running hard when I turn on Continuum. IAMAPP.exe is my Norton Firewall. How ironic, my firewall is now the problem and not the solution. However, I'm not going to disable the firewall because that will simply mean more problems. So....anyone know what causes your firewall to go nutty?

I moved my Continuum folder last night, and having done that, Norton firewall didn't know how to handle the moved instance of Continuum. It was Permitting the old location of Continuum, but not the new, so while it was on in the new location, the firewall was going batty. Ugh...technology. But thx for your help.

Start>Control Panel>Network Connections...right click on the connection you are using, click properties, go to the advanced tab, and check the box. You probably should configure the settings to suit you, so just click the settings button.

The firewall sets up all ports so that they are stealthed and doesn't respond to the usage of them unless a program running does that for the OS. If the firewall is not running the OS will automatically respond and say the ports are open for use. This is that basic function of the firewall and does not provide any more protection. Trojans and MS Blaster are a little annoying when it comes to Windows XP's Firewall. First, one of the key features that most firewalls have is a function that allows or disallows programs from accessing the internet. Windows XP's firewall doesn't have that and allows virii such as worms and trojans to do whatever they like without being detected or blocked. Second MS Blaster uses a port that Windows WILL respond to when scanned. Ad-aware detects and removes spyware (cookies, registry settings, and apps that get installed and cause popups and report web usage statistics to marketing companies who then then sell it) Norton is an anti-virus which detects and removes virii (usually embedded in untrustworthy software or files on P2P networks) Zone Alarm is a software firewall which limits access to and from the internet based on permissions for each program (which you set in the zone alarm app.) It also allows access to and from ports on your local machine via the same. If you are entirely paranoid, you can run all 3 of these side by side, because the overlap of what each does, with respect to the others, is probably about 5%) They all serve their own purpose. madhaha Posted October 17, 2003 Report Posted October 17, 2003 Norton also does a firewall and some spyware (as well as some "dubious" txt files) are detected and removed by anti-viral programs. Unfortunately Norton isn't as up to date as it used to be and it causes all manner of strange bugs and conflicts. WindowsXP's firewall is dowright dangerous because it isn't enabled by default, creates a false sense of security when it IS enabled and is targetted for cir-*BAD WORD*-version by a large number of malicious programs. Has anyone missed the obvious problem that downloading all this software and having all these autoupdates running might slow down his connection thus bringing us back to square 1?
