Activate Posted October 5, 2005 Report Posted October 5, 2005 anybody have a solution to solving my ?ping problem? I'll enter game and usually i'll have like 60-100 ms, 5 s later I have 500+ ms ?ping. If i look at my Zone Selection screen and look at the ping, it is constantly changing, like it'll go 70, , 70, 90, 500, ect. It's crazy then it'll jump back down for maybe 2 mins and go back up and stay there for a while and then jump back down. Also folders open up pretty slow, same with internet browser. I have a wireless dsl router, but don't think thats why because I've had this for the past like almost 3 years, and never had problems with it except maybe random D/C's. I've had the same computer/connection for all of my SS career so this is weird. This has been going on since early June, one day my comp was perfect at my regular constant 50 ms then the next day my comp was !@#$%^&*. I thought it was just another "phase" that my connection or computer was going through but I guess not . I haven't changed anything to my computer/connection since I started playing SS except my parents upgraded our DSL a couple notches to make our computer go faster. Suggestions? Also why does ?ping affect my playing and make everybody else look laggy and ?lag just makes me look laggy to the others and makes me tank. here some traces NEW TRACE:Tracing Zone: SSCU Death Star Battle IP Address: 69.56.227.178 Hop IP Address Host Name Loss(%) Min/Avg/Max Ping--- --------------- -------------------------------- ------- ---------------- 1 207.32.11.254 0.0 20 30 160 2 167.142.160.141 bltw-serial1-2-3.bltw.netins.net 0.0 20 20 40 3 167.142.53.117 ins-border10-ds1-53-117.desm.net 0.0 30 40 160 4 167.142.57.209 ins-core3-atm0-0.desm.netins.net 0.0 30 70 250 5 65.207.234.121 POS2-2.GW1.KCY4.ALTER.NET 0.0 30 60 290 6 65.207.234.121 POS2-2.GW1.KCY4.ALTER.NET 0.0 30 50 120 7 152.63.92.202 156.at-1-0-0.CL2.KCY4.ALTER.NET 0.0 30 390 8 152.63.103.89 POS7-0.GW1.DFW13.ALTER.NET 0.0 60 90 210 9 157.130.143.226 theplanet-gw.customer.alter.net 0.0 50 180 10 157.130.143.226 theplanet-gw.customer.alter.net 0.0 60 110 460 11 70.85.127.62 vl32.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com 96.0 60 60 60 12 12.96.160.51 car2-3-v2.dllstx2.theplanet.com 95.8 60 60 60 13 69.56.227.178 69-56-227-178.theplanet.com 0.0 60 130 660 Cycles: 24 OLD TRACE (when my ping was fine) Tracing Zone: SSCU Death Star Battle IP Address: 69.56.227.178 Hop IP Address Host Name Loss(%) Min/Avg/Max Ping --- --------------- -------------------------------- ------- ---------------- 1 216.51.167.254 0.0 10 20 70 2 167.142.160.165 bltw-serial1-3-2.bltw.netins.net 0.0 20 20 70 3 167.142.50.37 ins-border10-ds1-50-37.desm.neti 0.0 20 40 90 4 167.142.57.210 ins-core4-atm0-0.desm.netins.net 0.0 20 30 90 5 160.81.92.177 sl-gw31-chi-3-7.sprintlink.net 0.0 30 40 100 6 160.81.92.177 sl-gw31-chi-3-7.sprintlink.net 0.0 30 40 130 7 144.232.26.29 sl-bb21-chi-4-0.sprintlink.net 0.0 30 50 90 8 144.232.11.217 sl-bb20-fw-14-0.sprintlink.net 0.0 50 60 110 9 144.232.20.17 sl-st21-dal-1-0.sprintlink.net 0.0 50 70 190 10 144.232.20.17 sl-st21-dal-1-0.sprintlink.net 0.0 50 70 220 11 144.232.29.97 0.0 50 60 120 12 70.85.127.62 dist-vlan32.dsr3-2.dllstx3.thepl 95.6 50 50 50 13 70.85.127.76 dist-vlan22.dsr1-2.dllstx2.thepl 95.6 50 50 50 14 70.85.127.76 dist-vlan22.dsr1-2.dllstx2.thepl 95.6 50 50 50 15 12.96.160.19 car2-3-v1.dllstx2.theplanet.com 95.4 50 50 50 16 69.56.227.178 69-56-227-178.theplanet.com 0.0 50 60 110 Cycles: 22
Bargeld Posted October 5, 2005 Report Posted October 5, 2005 Notice that the traces don't take the same route. The most important part is that the new path to the server has the following 2 hops (which is where your lag originates) 10 157.130.143.226 theplanet-gw.customer.alter.net 0.0 60 110 460 13 69.56.227.178 69-56-227-178.theplanet.com 0.0 60 130 660 If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the same boat, except that I get specced out of the game when I spike. It's been going on for about 8 months, every 5-30 mins. I've had the cable Co. come out... they found a problem, fixed it, and my spikes were still there. Because of the hassle of scheduling the appointment, I gave up. I haven't been playing much lately, so I deal with it. As far as the ?ping and ?lag thing... you are imagining things Those commands aren't data intensive enough to cause you to lag by using them.
»SOS Posted October 6, 2005 Report Posted October 6, 2005 That trace looks really weird to me... could you perhaps let it run for an hour or so and then post it?

»SOS Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 Woah... that is weird... the max ping is high for most hops but never for the 11th one? Something is quite broken somewhere... and in a very weird way o_O Anyway, try it without your wireless router. Plug the dsl (I assume you have a ISP->bridge->router->PC connection? make it ISP->bridge->PC and create a DSL connection within Windows) straight into your computer. See what happens then. This can only be solved through trial and error, really. You can also try and see whether another computer works.
Activate Posted October 7, 2005 Author Report Posted October 7, 2005 i think i have what you mentioned speedstream box plugs into dsl router, router plugs into comp i tried doing speedstream box plug into comp, and nothing changed, my ping still was jumping from to 300+ what should i do or what else should i try? i'll do anything to fix this problem , i need to get my lag fixed for soon for dsbleague
»SOS Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 Ok, looks like router is not the problem. Two possibilities left: your PC is on the fritz or the ISP is broken. Most likely it's your computer, but who knows. Try another one if you can. You can also do a speed test to see if your connection is somewhere in the appropriate range. If it's not, there's more stuff to complain about to your ISP (since they usually don't take gaming problems seriously).
Activate Posted October 8, 2005 Author Report Posted October 8, 2005 if it's my comp, would a simple reformat and maybe reinstalling Windows help it? how do I do a speed check? and if my isp is fk'd then what to i go and tell them. (also my folders/browsers open slow, so may be comp)
»SOS Posted October 9, 2005 Report Posted October 9, 2005 A reformat might help, yes. (It could also be a broken network card, in which case a reformat would not help, but it's worth a shot) For speed checks, just google "connection speed test". You'll get plenty of tests there. If the ISP is fkd... you go and tell them that your ping times are incredibly jumpy. Try not to mention games, they really don't take those well. Just say something about a business app giving you alerts or something... if you can cook up a story like that
Activate Posted October 16, 2005 Author Report Posted October 16, 2005 i think im going to look into buying a new computer. If i just wanted something that would run continuum really efficiently without problems and for school work, what kind of comp should i get and about how much would it cost. (something within range of 300-800)
»SOS Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 Well, something in the 800 range should be pretty good for anything Low range might be OK but might be made of cheap components that can fail or be really weird (cheap network cards, especially integrated, can cause all sorts of unbelievable problems). One thing though, make sure you have at least 512MB of RAM. Everything runs a LOT faster that way. Besides RAM, not much is important. Get a good monitor, I guess.
