I've always used SSME... is !@#$%^&* any good? I've been a little... freaked about about clicking on a link with "!@#$%^&*" in the name when my mother's around blum.gif

!@#$%^&* is okay, but its really oldschool and there is little of an interface. SSME is definately easier to use, but !@#$%^&* offers more functionality due to the LVZ placement.

...oldschool? !@#$%^&* is a very new program written in a very new programming language providing very new features including support for a very new server's very new features...

Very new programming language? Java isn't exactly new... It's about as old as this game is. Perhaps older.

I think his point was that it's kind of odd calling !@#$%^&* "oldschool"

when it was released less than a year ago where as SSME was

released over 5 years ago.

I've always liked SSME and have used it for dozens of maps,

but if you want to make a more graphic map (using LVZ),

you're going to want to use !@#$%^&*. Using a text editor for

laying down lvz graphics on a map is a joke.

SSME is still better for tileset-only maps, though.

I disagree (of course I may be biased). !@#$%^&*'s interface is similar to that of SSME, but provides additional features which blow SSME away. Tired of switching tools in order to erase? !@#$%^&* has you covered as the eraser is just another tile in the tileset. There are also multiple colors on the grid to help you plan your level better. You can also define what a wall is (like all the edges and corners), and then draw with the wall and the program will put the right tile in for you. Or just draw with one tile, select your map, and tell the program to apply the wall to the entire map. Try doing that in SSME.

There are also countless new features SSME couldn't support, because it came out before they were made / discovered. Lvz, Regions, and newly discovered tiles will move your zone into the 21st century of Subspace development.

Also, in the newest version of !@#$%^&* the scrolling is reasonably sped up (to the point where, unless I'm zoomed out almost all the way it looks smooth on my 2 year old laptop).

I'll have to check out the latest version of !@#$%^&*. I'm still using the

version you released almost a year ago and from what I've read

you've added some good features recently.

I will agree that it is annoying how SSME has the eraser tool set up.

So? It was John Cleese who said the famous words "that is irrelevant" as they are best said. I would repeat them here. That is irrelevant.

Seriously, what are you talking about? In this whole topic, I never saw any link between the age of C++ and the age of Java. And now you suddenly compare them. Don't make me feel dumb! Explain... what does that matter?

Note where C++ is? It's near the end, too.

Decade+ before Java, however, and basically just an extension of C, which is another decade+ before. blum.gif

The very first incarnation of c++ was just a preprocessor for the c compiler

Technically, the very first incarnation of C++ wasn't even C++. It was C with classes.

But my point was that the language CLT was written in isn't a new one.

Freedom is the right to be wrong.
