protoman.exe Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Aight , so i got a comp with 256mb ram , I have a computer from before that has a 64mb ram , I already took it out before I trashed the old one , So heres my question , Can I put in this 64mb ram , and have more ram , or will it kinda slow or crap up my computer? Just wanna know before I stick it in , Cause I kinda need it if i wanna play ss and listen to music at the same time , or else I gotta lower my reso , which I dont wanna do.
»SOS Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 If you can't play music at the same time then it's time to stop using that really crappy music player and switch to something better I suggest Winamp 2.8. But on topic, it depends. On what type the new memory is. If it is of lower speed then your existing memory will also work at the lower speed (memory works at the speed of the slowest module). Depending on the motherboard, two modules of inequal size might not work at all (mobos are picky like that). !@#$%^&*uming your old ram even fits in the new slot
protoman.exe Posted April 7, 2005 Author Report Posted April 7, 2005 So like , yes , no ? Maybe so ? Main question is .. Will it slow it down or speed it up?
»SOS Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 Heh To sum it up: if it works at all then if the memory you add is crappier then it will slow down. But if it is the same or better, it'll be good.
Bajan Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 music plays ok with a lower than normal resolution for you? or was that just an idea? it could be possible your sound card is configured to play a low number of sound channels at a time. Take a look at your audio settings. Quickest way to check these settings..if you have an icon on your system tray, besides the normal windows speaker for audio. double click that and your likely to find channel settings.. A possible cause/solution..
Bargeld Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 There are different types of ram. Make sure that the 64 megs of old ram is the correct type of ram to use.
protoman.exe Posted April 11, 2005 Author Report Posted April 11, 2005 I'd prefer not to stick this old ram in and go "find" a 256 or 512 , tnx anyway , and yes I acn play music and ss good at a lower resolution.
protoman.exe Posted September 23, 2005 Author Report Posted September 23, 2005 Let me revive this with a new question. I have a stick of Kingston 256 DDR SDRAM PC2700 in my computer. Do I need to get another kingston 256 ddr sdram pc2700 , for my computer , or can it just be any other 256mb ram , or 256 ddr sdram , does it have to be the same company?
FIX Posted September 23, 2005 Report Posted September 23, 2005 not really on topic, but a good player that uses hadrly any CPU and doesnt lower FPS on SS is: Quintessential playertons of skins for it and its easy to use
»SOS Posted September 24, 2005 Report Posted September 24, 2005 As a side note, Winamp 2 rules On topic: no, it doesn't have to be the same company. Almost any other stick should work (with a few exceptions if you have very cheap ram/motherboard). Also, the only RAM that'll fit in normal slots is DDRAM (DDR SDRAM), so there's no choice there. You don't have to get PC2700 but the computer will use the worst speed from both sticks for both, so 2700 is the most useful one.
