ZingyZ Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I downloaded the two or three java ASSS chat clients on ssdownloads to try them on the computers at school (which have permission restrictions not allowing students to install programs). Apparently a JRE is installed because if i try running the .jar file the zone-selection screen opens up, however I can't connect to any zone... so i assume some other type of blocking is taking place (maybe only certain ports are allowed to be opened?) Is there any way around this? Having to carry around my laptop is annoying because our college campus is rather big. I would prefer to use one of the computers at a computer lab instead.
50% Packetloss Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Any client other than Continuum connects to servers with Subspace protocol. The problem is that most zones only allow continuum clients to enter. The exception would be ASSS servers, which have a special chat client that grel made that connect to them. The only large zone that uses ASSS is Hyperspace.Another possible problem is that the school's admins block subspace port numbers. This, however, is unlikely because subspace servers can operate on any port number. So it's probably more probable that they restrict all ports except those that web-browsers operate on (port I think, look it up here http://www.iana.org/!@#$%^&*i...s/port-numbers). So in the case of port-blocking, you won't get around it. In the case of just the chat-clients not working, get continuum and enjoy.
»SOS Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 Since you said you downloaded ASSS clients, that's almost certainly the problem - as 50% said, only Hyperspace uses ASSS.

50% Packetloss Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 Have you tried using continuum? Make sure that you have version pr1.
Guest Guest_ZingyZ_* Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 Have you tried using continuum? Make sure that you have version pr1.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Can't install any programs (restrictions), thats why I was relying on the java clients.
50% Packetloss Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 So are you unable to install programs? Or did they install deep-freeze on thier computers so that the HD is reverted back to its previous state each time its booted up? You could install continuum on a flash disk (a little USB one that you can stick on your keychain) then run the program from that. I'm not sure if it would work, especially file I/O, but it is worth a shot.
»SOS Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 Well it's probably just a firewall then.Or Java has restrictions set (if that's possible - I don't know or use Java).
The Maurauder Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 My solution to this is rather archaic, but it works fine. I simply copied my Continuum folder (out of program files) onto a CD-R. It runs fine. You cannot download new maps/LVZ files, but you can play well enough. The game runs sligltly slower than if you run it normally, but overall it is completely useable.
