GENERAL_SLAYER Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 !@#$%^&*o my fellow subspace comrades...iam GS or GENERAL_SLAYER as you will know soon enoght...letme tell you guys a lil bit about my SS history..*Ive been playing ss about 2 years now and have fallen in love with this weird but addicting game...and have slowly fell into staffing ALOTiam a mapper, of course not the best but just what you want. *sigh* like who freaking kares... Well i have had alot of Experince in the past about making zonesi have worked for numbers of zones...BF1942, Eternal Dragons, The Realm of the Eternal Dragon, SSX star wars battle front, Anything goes,Blunt Hex,Orical trianing, Death Rush, and SOCOM II Now that i have learned about zones and how they work rather than just playing... I rele want to try to make my own zone.but i do need some tips and stuff on how to start out. Hopefully it willturn up good.... I have 1000s of ideas i could use but iam useing mostly one right now that i will not Ad right now cuz its not up yet and some jerk could take my idea. Its more of a hands on zone tho. I need some good tips on *GOOD Settings (thats is hard)*bots*Lvzmostly settings thomaps ive got down...ships ive got down...and the tileset needs to be worked on.... thanks a bunch -GS
BG Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 *GOOD settings. Try to veer away from super and one hit kill zones, Many people avoid these because they either lag too much(super) or they are too 'newbish.'(one hit kills) Keep it simple, and lay down base-settings, but don't iron them down. Get a few people to join you in the dev zone, so you can tweak settings appropriately, It's nice to have a few points of view on the settings, and see how different ships interact with eachother. Get a good clear idea of what type of play you want BEFORE you start working on settings. I.E. Do you want Fast-paced flagging, Or more turf style ships? Here is how I view the ships: 1-2: Main dogfighters3: Cloaker/dogfighter4: Heavy support/bomber5: All-around6: Cloaker/sneak attacks7-8: Base Defense Ships You should have a similar idea in mind, so you don't end up with really weird settings. Eh, My two cents.
Vile Requiem Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 Do not even start a zone unless you have a botmaker and a gfx dude. These people can NOT be you or you will burn yourself out. And as for settings, make SURE every ship has an expolitable flaw (like poor thrust, lack of a bomb, poor recharge, etc). Do not make this flaw X Radar dependant ("Can't see cloakers for !@#$%^&*!") or you will regret it.
Kameloh Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 I suggest that you don't make any zones unless you have the time and patience to put up with one. Also, don't staff if the people are '!@#$%^&*s.
»D1st0rt Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 Do not even start a zone unless you have a botmaker and a gfx dude. These people can NOT be you or you will burn yourself out. I only half agree with this in that they should BOTH not be you. I do believe that you should be one or the other. These are very large aspects of a zone and you're likely to not have anything in those departments or look like a fool when you aren't doing the work. Unless you are a big, and I mean BIG zone, owners need to have a large part in development.
»SOS Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 And you need lots of connections to draw in people with! I mean friends and their friends! People will not come on their own. You have to bring them in. You can give just about every poor fella who asks moderator powers to get some cheap popularity - that's what just about all zones to - bring in people with powers. You'll probably have a hard time otherwise (but if you do not want cheap pop like this, I suggest not hiring any lower staff until you actually need some - that is when there's a constant population in the zone). Do not implement too many ways of play in your zone. I mean do not make it a powerball-flagging-smacking-fracking-gooboglating zone. Just pick flagging or turf or powerball or killing or whatever. One of them. And really really try to avoid bot spam! There are some new zones that use so many of so crappy bots that every minute you get 10 arena messages that are totally pointless (of course 75% of bots are not well designed so you'll have a problem there). Balancing settings is very hard indeed. However, the main thing to keep in mind is that you should never have any serious advantages or disadvantages. You can never balance them correctly. I mean that no ship should be twice as fast/slow as others or have 3 times more energy. And sniper ships are very bad too. And do not go too far with the exploitable flaw for ships. It should not be a huge flaw. Say most ships have 23-25 thrust, the badly moving one could have 21 or so. And I prefer it if zones do not give craploads of items to ships at start but I guess that's just my own preference. I find that semi-super settings feel best for me - enough weapons flying around to make misses due to lag irrelevant since they won't be noticed at all (a very important part of a zone - this game's weakness to lag really shows if you have crap settings!).Oh and high thrust is always bad! Never do it! Even with rockets. Also, do not have a big map at start. You can make it bigger as people come, but do not fill more than 25% of the whole map if your zone has no players constantly in it. A very mportant thing that most people miss: useless information is useless! That means only put meaningful stuff in rules and F1 or it will all be ignored inside a flow of meaninglessness. And if your zone is a bit funky or has a few odd twists, you should present some sort of a tagline describing them in an entering-zone lvz graphic. People in general do not read the news and F1 - most zones fill them with crap so they don't bother looking at them!
»Maverick Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 (edited) lots of stuff<{POST_SNAPBACK}> AKA. don't start a new zone Edited March 31, 2005 by SOS
GENERAL_SLAYER Posted March 31, 2005 Author Report Posted March 31, 2005 I was thinking tho.... if i have a good name that gets peoples attention people would come. I made SSX Star Wars Battle front and failed. But now That i am hostied by SSU i hopefully can think of another great idea. I understand that its not easy. I have exp. how much time it takes to do things. I want a hands on type of zone which will let some kids accually be able to work with zone map and small stuff. That will be alot of fun. But i rele like the tips u are giving me.I rele appericate it. -gs
candygirl Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 I made SSX Star Wars Battle front <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So your the one! Next time use your own map not my map for your main arina.
GENERAL_SLAYER Posted March 31, 2005 Author Report Posted March 31, 2005 I made SSX Star Wars Battle front <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So your the one! Next time use your own map not my map for your main arina.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> it was temp map....anyways and the last map i made there was 100 kustum. sry for the inconvenonce tho. I dont usally steal tho. I was just testing anyways. Wont happen agian.
»SOS Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 The problem is that most people do not update their zone list, ever. And when they do, they won't hop in a zone that has no players. Get past these two problems and the whole game would be a better place (if only I had Continuum's source... I have a fix!)
Trained Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 Does priit have who he is going to give the continuum source to in his will? I think the high ranked people in SS should get together and make a continuum developement team and ask for the source.. so the game can be updated more frequent. I also think the game should be automatically updated.. like steam..
GENERAL_SLAYER Posted March 31, 2005 Author Report Posted March 31, 2005 well...Why dont people update thier download list..There are some rele goods zones there missing...and they shold give some zones a chance. At least Vist once wont do no harm.If you dont like the zone u just clearily dont have to stay. Like one of my fav. zone is a new download called XXXX Anything Goes...-gs
Trained Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 Ah, AG was around before, but got shutdown due to something. Me and DB go a few months back, hes a very smart guy with alot of potential. I don't understand why people don't update there zone list neither, but I think I know why they don't visit new zones. I beleive its because all there friends are in the populated zones, and they can't reach them on non-ssc billing servers. Well I know thats one reason. And some people simply don't know how to refresh their zone lists.
Paine Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 If you're gonna start yourself up a new zone, at least make it ASSS
»D1st0rt Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 You need a linux computer to get it to build though
GENERAL_SLAYER Posted April 2, 2005 Author Report Posted April 2, 2005 If you're gonna start yourself up a new zone, at least make it ASSS <{POST_SNAPBACK}> why?
»SOS Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 Use ASSS if you want to make sure you can't get it up and running. If you want to make sure the commands are different from what you're used to. If you want needlessly overcompilacted, bloated designs. If you want very flexible server-side scripting/bots. If you want some new weird biller-thingy.
»D1st0rt Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 as³ runs out of the box much more easily than subgame
»SOS Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 Erm... last time I tried it, it did not. Perhaps it has gotten better now.Anyway, subgame requires you to edit a few fields in server.ini and you're set. What exactly is the setup process for ASSS?
Smong Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 You need a linux computer to get it to build though<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Lies. At least you agree with me on the double click simplicity.
»SOS Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 Unzip, double click on ASSS.bat<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hmm, that's great then I should check it out when I happen to have some time to spare (wtf, how'd I get on ssofurm right now... I was studying Russian last I remember... I still should be...)
GENERAL_SLAYER Posted April 3, 2005 Author Report Posted April 3, 2005 all i need now is a good server!
