Ok, I am new to all of this. First I have to right click and chose "Run as.." to even get the game to work. After I choose a zone to go into, I enter all my information. It goes to the screen where it says "entering arena" and it starts download the lvl I assume. At 47% I get the following error.

anyone know what I need to do ?

I am using windows xp sp2, MSI 6600GT (vid card), newest audio, and video drivers.

The error about not able to create the file is because you are running Continuum "Run As..."

Try to get the game to run without that first.

How ? If I just click the program to run normally, it just sits there, with an hour glass CPU will be at 100%. I can view the processes via CTRL-ALT-DEL and it shows Continuum.exe moving around. I am open to any suggestions that you may have regarding this.

Same thing happened to me on my step-moms computer..

So far, from reading all the other threads like this, there isnt a fix for it. I mean, I cant just uninstall my AVG, and my two Anti-Spyware programs (ad-aware se pro, and Microsoft Anti-spyware), just so I MIGHT be able to play the game. Maybe I'll dualboot to windows 98 ? hehe...

Yea, I have not intention of removing any of my security programs. I mean, if the game cant be played w/o all these problems, I guess I just dont get to play.

Anyone else have any suggestions ? I used to love this game back in the day. If I can find my 98 SE disk, I might dual boot that. Not sure if I can find it though.

I can't reproduce it either. Well, my Continuum crashes immediately if I use "Run as" blum.gif

You can try adding Continuum to the ignore list of all your security applications if you don't want to try removing them.

Now, I don't mean to come accross as insulting, so if I do I apologise.

I've just downloaded SSC, and after installing it came across the old "can't create" error myself after using the "Run as" workaround. Having looked through the several topics on the issue I of course discovered the same answer - uninstall any suspicious programs.

Now I know this game is freeware, and that we can't expect miracles, but don't you think asking people to disable their anti-spyware, anti-virus and firewall is a little . . . cheeky.

Basically you're asking people to disable and uninstall the programs they put there to defend their computers against malicious actions from others. By even disabling them, you make yourself vulnerable to infections, trojans, and all manner of crap floating around the internet these days. And of course, the fact that so many people will have to do this to get the game to run makes SSC a hacker's hunting grounds.

Basically what I'm getting at, is this - are there any plans to add a "safe list" to SSC so that certain programs (well known firewalls, anti-virus software etc) are not treated as suspicious. I think it's unreasonable to ask people to take down their defences to play a game. While I realise that it's a person's choice whether they want to do this or not, it not only robs many player's of what I'm sure is a wonderful game, but it robs a wonderful game of those eager, if slightly frustrated players.

Well, that's my rant over.

You do not know what you are talking about. Continuum.exe does not treat those anti-viral programs as suspicios, the opposite is true. You do not have to complentely disable your firewalls/defensive programs to run continuum. Simply put it on your "Safe list" within the antivirus software. If your firewall/antivirus does not have a "safe list" then it is crappy to begin with. I know for a fact that Norton has a list like this, and i am pretty sure ZoneAlarm does as well. Your spyware/adware removal programs will not block continuum unless you have downloaded an additional firewall or "security net" from the same site or through the program. Just because continuum is on your "safe list" doesnt mean you are open for attack. I know of no way to hack a computer through continuum.exe, and i have never heard of any such cases. If you are attacked, it will be via a different form than continuum. Granted, someone may be able to optain your IP through continuum, but they can only hack or sent viruses using other programs. If you do get a virus, your antivirus/firewall should block any information being exchanged between the suspicios program and other computers, and should offer you the option to remove it. I do not know what you are using, but I have never had a problem allowing open access to continuum while using Norton (Symantec) Internet Security.

Maloric, it's actually the other way around. Continuum doesn't detect the spyware and react to it by not running... The spyware reacts to Continuum's presence by thinking it is a malicious app, and prevents it from running properly. The correct solution is for the authors of those pieces of software to put Continuum on their white list, allowing it to run normally.

Ok, apologies again if I get this wrong, but the way I understood it was that SSC won't run because it thinks the anti-virus programs etc are suspicious - i.e. may be programs used to cheat in the game. This quote comes from SOS's post on the matter:

"Continuum has built-in security mechanisms that do not allow it to be run if a suspicious program is active."

Which suggests the cause is Continuum itself.

And this further quote seems to add to that theory:

"It's probably that Continuum does not like a program you have on your computer - it thinks you intend to cheat. Therefore it won't run.

Try removing all your running programs and uninstalling any suspicious ones."

This was the symptom of running Continuum without right clicking and selecting Run As. I'm sure you can see where I'm coming from. Apologies again if I'm wrong.

Oh, sorry, as a side note I have added Continuum to my allow list for the firewall. Here's the anti-whatever software I'm currently using:

Sygate Personal Firewall

eTrust EZ Antivirus

Spyware Doctor

Neither Spyware Doctor or EZ Antivirus have safe lists, since EZ is there to scan for viruses and delete them, not limit the actions of other programs and Spyware Doctor is set to run scans when I tell it after which I decide which programs it thinks are suspicious should be deleted. So it only takes action when I tell it to.

Yes, indeed, Continuum is the one who blocks the execution since any protection program would no doubt alert the user of a blocked application whereas Continuum usually stays silent when it refuses to run.

It might be possible to add a safe list to Continuum (not sure though, since the protection programs might also try to hide that it is them who are doing the probing) but since the last update was......... many many years ago and the programmer is nowhere in sight..... that does not seem likely.

I understand that it is quite a concern to require users to disable their protection programs but alas... fixing that would require someone who can add new code to the game, and the only person who could do that is nowhere in sight.

Ok, well thanks for the reply. I'll keep plugging away at the problem - there's got to be some agreeable workaround for it . . . I hope. One question someone might be able to answer here is to do with the Run As command.

When you select the program to Run As a particular user, the check box is to "Protect my computer and data from unauthorised program activity". Does anyone know of a list somewhere in the control panel maybe, that defines which programs are authorised. I checked windows firewall, but that didn't seem to be it, since the Run As blocks any program, not just those accessing the internet. I added Continuum to the Windows Firewall safe list anyway, but with no luck.

I'll check out the Microsoft site on the thing - maybe Bill Gates knows.

What that checkbox does is basically disable file write access (hence the cannot create file error) and probably some other things like that (for example registry access is probably limited). Only for the actual program that you run (Continuum) - others are unaffected.
